Chapter 652: You Have a Part in This
Connie is my daughter-in-law. I absolutely will not let anything happen to her," Gracie Mendoza said. "Since the Livingston family dares to lay a hand on her. I should think about how to repay them. Just like how we repaid the Tillman family back then."
The look on Gracie's face now even sent a
slight chill down Adeline Hensley's spine.
Back when she was kidnapped by Benjamin Tillman, the Mendoza family had shown absolutely no mercy to the Tillman family...
Even though Isaac was still in the hospital now, Gracie wasn't the least bit afraid.
"Adeline, don't worry," Gracie said with a smile to her. "Every single person in our family will be just fine."
Gracie's words made Adeline's eyes grow slightly moist.
She nodded and said, "Mm, they will."
After Gracie left, Adeline went upstairs to the nursery.
Monica was sitting by the crib, holding Pharrell. The nanny stood to the side, looking flustered and helpless. It seemed Monica no longer allowed her to get close to Pharrell.
However, holding Pharrell now, Monica's emotions were noticeably calmer than before.
Seeing Adeline approach, a flicker of nervousness crossed her eyes, and she held Pharrell even tighter.
"I told you, I won't hurt Pharrell," Adeline said.
"I'm not that despicable, to harm a child."
Monica's lips moved, but she said nothing.
Frowning, Adeline added, "You'd better not hold him so tightly; he'll be uncomfortable."
As soon as the words left her mouth, Pharrell whimpered twice.
Belatedly realizing, Monica quickly loosened her grip and softly soothed him.
"Hush, don't cry, Mommy's here...
Pharrell quieted down after a few whimpers.
"He's innocent... he doesn't know anything...
Monica choked out between sobs.
"He certainly is innocent," Adeline said coldly.
"But you? Not so innocent."
This incident with Connie's kidnapping definitely had something to do with Monica too.
Monica stiffened, then said tearfully, .
despairingly, "There's no use... I can't hide it anymore... You're right. Pharrell really isn't Alberto's son. I never even slept with Alberto."
That night, she did take Alberto to the hotel, but she left after settling him in.
"That much l've already confirmed," Adeline said.
"What I was talking about just now wasn't that."
"What?" A hint of confusion flashed in Monica's tear-filled eyes.
But soon, she seemed to remember something.-She was so guilty she couldn't even look at Adeline.
Seeing her like this, Adeline understood everything in an instant.
"Connie was taken," Adeline said, suppressing the anger in her heart. "You have a part in this, don't you?"
Monica didn't dare speak.
"How far do you have to hurt Connie before you'll stop?"
The fact that Adeline was still speaking to Monica like this was. entirely for Pharrell's sake. If she weren't afraid of frightening the child, she would have slapped her long ago.
"I... I had no choice..."
Monica started crying again, but her tears couldn't soften Adeline's heart now.
"Put Pharrell down properly," Adeline took a deep breath and said. "The nanny will take good care of him. You come with me; we need to talk."
Seeing Adeline's expression, Monica didn't dare, refuse.
However, she now believed that the Mendoza family wouldn't hurt Pharrell. The Mendozas were different from those people before...
She carefully placed Pharrell back in the crib.
Adeline gave the nanny a look, and the nanny immediately went to stand watch by the crib.
Monica, head bowed, followed Adeline out of the nursery.
As soon as Adeline closed the nursery door behind them, a sharp slap landed hard on Monica's face.
Adeline held nothing back.
Monica's ears rang from the force of the blow.
But she didn't dare get angry or fight back. She could only cover her cheek, head still bowed, and say, "I'm sorry."
"Alberto and Connie were perfectly fine, but you had to force your way between them. And now, you've gotten her kidnapped!"
Adeline's chest heaved with rage.
She was usually calm, but at this moment, she utterly despised the woman before her.
Yes, Monica was a good mother. She probably did all this for her son.
But Connie was innocent! She shouldn't have had to suffer any of this!
Now Connie was in the hands of the Mendoza family's enemies. What might happen to her was something Adeline didn't even dare imagine!
"I... I didn't mean for this... " Monica said
plaintively. "But, if Connie is around, I really have no way to get close to Alberto. So I... I just complained a bit to that man. I never thought he'd do something like this..."
Actually, she had thought of it.
But...
She simply didn't care what happened to Connie.
Maybe she felt a little guilty.
But that bit of guilt was nothing compared to her and her son's interests.
And Adeline didn't believe a single word of her excuses.
If Monica hadn't complained to the people from the Livingston family, they probably never would have kidnapped Connie.
This Monica, seemingly soft and weak on the surface, acting as if she doesn't want to hurt anyone, as if everything she does is forced upon her-in reality, she is deeply selfish.
She wants to become the young madam of
the Mendoza family, to live a life of luxury, to have her son become the Mendoza heir.
Even though deep down she knows perfectly well that none of this rightfully belongs to them.
But she doesn't want to admit her own selfishness, so sometimes she convinces herself of how utterly forced and helpless she is.
She's almost succeeded in fooling herself.
Seeing the increased fury on Adeline's face, Monica was terrified. She simply dropped to her knees before Adeline.
"Adeline, I had no choice. You've seen Pharrell's~ condition. It's been so hard for me," Monica wailed, tears streaming.
"Pharrell's father died before he was even born. Then Pharrell got this illness... And those people, they showed up, threatening Pharrell's life to force me. Do you know, they held Pharrell by a window, threatening to throw him from the twentieth floor! At that moment, I truly..."
What Monica said about this incident was true.
Back then, the Livingston family people forcibly took her and Pharrell to a room on the twentieth floor. Then a man, right in front of her, held Pharrell by the window.
They said if she dared disobey them, they would throw her son down.
That scene left a deep psychological scar on her.
And there was more.
She had no doubt that if she didn't listen to them, they would kill Pharrell without hesitation.
"Adeline, Pharrell is my own son. For his sake, l could only obey them. I didn't want to deceive you all either, but as a mother, how could I just. stand by and watch my own son die!"
