Chapter 662: Fooling Even Herself
Adeline nodded.
Thinking ọf Monica's bizarre behavior, she asked the doctor beside her, "What could cause someone to have such a sudden, drastic change in character?"
The doctor asked, "Can you describe the specifics?"
Adeline explained Monica's transformation.
She had clearly been a mother who loved her child deeply before.
Yet today, she had disregarded her child's safety and used him to threaten Adeline?
After listening, the doctor pondered for a moment and said, "I suspect she might have some mental health issues."
"But during our time with her these past days, we didn't notice anything unusual," Adeline said.
"Mental illnesses are complex," the doctor analyzed. "Some people, despite having a mental disorder, may appear no different from a normal person in daily life. Or, they might be pretending to be normal."
Adeline nodded.
"Among these individuals, a small fraction are exceptionally good at deception. They can not only fool others but sometimes even fool themselves."
Hearing this, Adeline felt a sudden chill.
"Fool themselves?"
"Yes. After all, they are unwell here," the doctor tapped his own temple, "not as an insult, but in the literal, medical sense. The Miss Monica you mentioned, I believe, likely desperately wanted to portray herself as a mother who loved her child wholeheartedly, willing to sacrifice everything for him. So she desperately presented this image to the outside world while simultaneously brainwashing herself. In the end, she even believed it herself. But when subjected to immense stress, her true nature surfaces."
Adeline began to understand.
Monica loved Pharrell, but she probably loved herself more.
It was true that the Mason family had used Pharrell to threaten Monica into obeying them initially. However, deep down, Monica herself also craved the wealth and status of the Mendoza family.
Even if those people hadn't used Pharrell to threaten her, she would have been willing to deceive the Mendozas.
But she was unwilling to admit this. She refused to acknowledge her own deceitfulness.
Moreover, a thought constantly lurked in her mind: what if the truth came out someday?
She decided that if that day came, she must portray herself as a tragic mother forced into wrongdoing for her child's sake.
This thought repeated in her mind so often that she ended up deceiving herself.
Over time, she genuinely came to see herself as a mother who loved Pharrell with all her heart.
Even after her scheme was exposed, she was still concerned about Pharrell's well-being.
But then, the incident with Connie being
kidnapped occurred.
She knew this matter was serious.
And Adeline had discovered her involvement in Connie's kidnapping.
If anything really happened to Connie, the Mendoza family would never let her off!
This shock gradually brought her true thoughts to the surface.
Coming to the Mendoza estate wasn't solely for Pharrell; more importantly, it was for her own pursuit of wealth and status...
In truth, she loved herself the most; she cared about herself above all else.
Furthermore, she didn't know that Connie had already been successfully rescued.
The more she thought about it, the more panicked she became. She feared what the Mendozas would do to her-send her to prison, make her life a living hell... Coupled with her observation that the Mendozas wouldn't simply abandon an infant like Pharrell...
Thus, the incident where she used Pharrell to threaten Adeline happened.
At this point, Harrison spoke up. "Monica claimed she still had relatives under the control of the Mason family, right? But according to my investigation, her parents are deceased, and she has no other close relatives. Also, so far, there's been no information about anyone being held by the Mason Group."
"That point might also be part of her delusion," the doctor said. "It further helps her construct the image of someone forced into wrongdoing."
"Or perhaps the Mason family has hidden them too well, and we haven't found them yet," Adeline said, rubbing her temples, feeling a headache coming on. "Regardless, it's best to be cautious. I don't want to see innocent people get hurt."
"Mm, don't worry," Harrison said, putting an arm around her shoulders. "My people are keeping a close watch, and now the police have also started investigating the Mason family. They won't remain at large for long."
Adeline nodded, a hint of worry still in her eyes.
She wondered if Pharrell's health would deteriorate further after this ordeal.
After recuperating at the Mendoza estate for this period, his health had finally improved somewhat, only for this to happen now...
Thinking of Monica, Adeline felt a complex mix of emotions.
She had believed that, at the very least, Monica was a mother who loved her child.
Yet, it seemed all of that might have been an. illusion. Monica had pretended so much that she ended up fooling even herself.
No matter what, it was true that Monica had used Pharrell's safety to threaten her.
If they had been any later, Pharrell might not have been saved!
"You should go rest for a while," Harrison said to her. "You woke up too early today; you probably didn't sleep well. I'll stay here and keep watch. If there's any news, I'll come tell you immediately."
Adeline shook her head. "Even if I went to rest now, I wouldn't be able to sleep. And I don't really want to be alone. It's fine, I'll wait here."
Though it pained him to see her like this,
Harrison couldn't force her. He could only stay by her side and have someone bring hot coffee.
Alberto Mendoza and Gracie Mendoza had stayed at the hospital overnight to keep Connie and Isaac company.
Now, hearing that Pharrell was back in the hospital, they hurried over.
Before long, the doctors finally emerged.
"He's stable for now," one doctor said, removing his mask. "But it's best to keep him hospitalized for observation for a while. Also, the child will likely feel very uncomfortable these next few days; he'll have to endure some suffering."
Gracie frowned slightly, thinking of the child she had genuinely come to care for, her heart aching for him.
"What a tragedy..."
"Where is Monica?" Alberto asked, his expression grim.
"She's still at the estate-"
Before Adeline could finish, her phone suddenly rang.
Her heart skipped a beat, a vague sense of foreboding washing over her.
Answering the call, it was indeed a panicked voice of a Mendoza servant on the other end.
"Miss Adeline, it's terrible! Monica... she ran away!"
"What? Didn't I tell you to watch her closely?"
Adeline demanded sharply.
"We were! But... she... she said she was too worried about Pharrell..."
Initially, the Mendoza servants had been vigilantly watching Monica.
But Monica had wept and begged them, pleading to be allowed to go to the hospital to see to be allowed to go to the hospital to see Pharrell.
Her tearful, heartfelt pleas about her worry and love for her child softened the hearts of the servants guarding her.
