Chapter 643: The Failed Tease
"A friend of mine went to a social gathering a while back, and at that gathering, she met the current head of the Mason Group, Powell Mason, the eldest son of the Mason family," Wendy Hartman said.
She poured a glass of red wine for Adeline Hensley and continued, "That night, she and Powell Mason hit it off, so they went to a hotel. When she woke up the next morning, she heard Powell on the phone. At the time, Powell didn't know she was awake, and my friend pretended to be asleep to avoid an awkward situation."
"What did she hear?" Adeline asked.
Wendy Hartman hesitated slightly. "Miss
Hensley, I trust your character, which is why I'm willing to tell you this. I also got my friend's consent beforeHartmand. But please promise that no matter what happens in the future, you won't reveal that this came from me or my friend."
"You have my word," Adeline assured immediately.
"Powell was standing on the balcony at the time, and his voice wasn't very loud, so my friend didn't hear everything clearly," Wendy Hartman explained. "But she heard him mention the Mendoza Group on the phone and also brought up a woman."
A flicker of understanding passed through
Adeline's eyes.
"He seemed to say something like, 'that woman will definitely be able to help us with this!' As for what else was said after that, my friend couldn't make it out. We suspect the woman he mentioned might have some connection to the Mendoza Group. This happened several months ago. I don't know if anything has happened on your end since then, but if it has, this might provide a small clue."
Adeline nodded with a smile. "I understand.
THartmank you, Ms. Hartman."
What Wendy Hartman said further confirmed the suspicions that had been forming in Adeline's and Harrison Thomson's minds over the past few days.
"You're welcome," Wendy Hartman smiled.
"Miss Hensley helped me before. I'm just able to tell you these ambiguous bits of information. And to be honest, my friend is also helping herself. She told me she's long been fed up with that man, Powell Mason."
That night, Powell had been completely selfish in bed, not caring about her feelings at all.
And later, he even created obstacles for her in business dealings.
Considering they had spent a night together,
Powell showed no mercy whatsoever.
So now she was more tHartman happy to see the Mason family fall to the Mendoza Group.
She didn't share these details with Adeline, but Adeline could more or less guess.
The meal was quite pleasant, and the two chatted amiably.
Wendy Hartman also shared quite a bit of business-related information concerning the Mason Group. Adeline noted it all down, planning to relay it to Alberto Mendoza later to see how accurate it was and if any of it could be useful.
When they had chatted enough, Adeline's phone chimed a few times.
She picked it up to see messages from Harrison.
He was urging her to come home.
Adeline helplessly replied, "Heading back soon."
As she put her phone down, she heard Wendy Hartman ask, "Was that Mr. Thomson?"
Adeline nodded.
Wendy Hartman smiled slightly. "I could tell by your expression."
Though there was a hint of helplessness in Adeline's expression just now, there was more gentleness and obvious affection.
It was clear that she and Harrison shared a truly good relationship.
Wendy Hartman said earnestly, "I've thought carefully about what we discussed before. I realize some of my views were indeed mistaken. I will try to change those incorrect
perspectives."
Adeline said, "I knew you weren't someone who would stubbornly cling to mistakes."
"Ultimately, I still have to tHartmank you."
"You've also told me quite a few things today that are very useful for our Mendoza family. So, we've helped each other," Adeline said.
"You don't need to dwell on past matters anymore, Ms. Hartman."
Wendy Hartman said, "Mm. In the future, if you or Mr. Thomson need any help from me, please don't hesitate to ask. As long as it's within my power, I won't refuse."
"Likewise," Adeline said with a smile.
After the meal and conversation, the two said their goodbyes and left. When Adeline returned home and entered their room, she saw Harrison sitting on the sofa reading a book.
He was wearing loungewear and gold-rimmed glasses. Under the light of the desk lamp, he really did look like a wholesome, domesticated man.
It sparked a desire in Adeline to tease him.
Harrison had intended to put down the book and get up to greet her, but when he looked up, he saw her quickly walk over, reach out, and hook a finger under his chin.
"Baby, l'm home," she said.
As soon as the words left her mouth, before Harrison could even react, she herself was creeped out by her own cheesiness.
"Got goosebumps all over," she muttered under her breath.
Harrison laughed, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her onto his lap.
"Trying to tease me?"
"You saw right through me," Adeline sighed. "Too bad I messed it up. Failed tease."
"You come back so late and still dare to tease me? Such audacity," Harrison said, deliberately putting on a stern face.
"It's not that late!" Adeline protested. "It's still quite early."
"You were gone for over three hours," Harrison stated.
Adeline was momentarily speechless.
"Ahem, travel time is included," she said, wrapping her arms around his neck and nuzzling his cheek appeasingly. "Besides, we were talking serious business. She provided a lot of useful information."
"Really?"
"Mhmm," Adeline nodded like a little chick pecking at rice.
Harrison tried to keep a straight face, but the smile at the corner of his mouth was unstoppable.
"Alright then, I forgive you."
Adeline was about to say 'great, but then she felt something was off.
"Wait, since when did you get to be the one acting all high and mighty?" she demanded, widening her eyes.
Harrison gave a light cough. "I'm not acting high and mighty."
"That just now wasn't high and mighty?"
Adeline reached out to pinch his waist.
"Ouch..." Harrison sucked in a sharp breath.
"That hurts."
"Hurts? Did I even use any force?" Adeline asked, amused.
"It really hurts," Harrison insisted. "I need you to comfort me properly to make it better."
"Hmph, don't try that old trick."
"It hurts..."
"Alright, alright, how about a kiss?"
"Two kisses."
The warm-toned lighting added a touch of coziness to the room.
Lily Sparrow had just returned from grocery shopping. As she approached the entrance of her apartment building, ready to go
in, she suddenly noticed a car nearby that looked somewhat familiar.
Wasn't that... Russell Hunter's car?
Just as she was uncertain, the car door opened.
The person who stepped out was indeed Russell.
"Mr. Hunter," Lily hurried over. "You're here. Why didn't you come upstairs?"
