Chapter 625 It's Only the First Day
After lunch, Alberto immediately went to the nursery to stay with Pharrell.
In his heart, he had already accepted Pharrell as his son, so naturally, the more he looked at him, the more he loved him. Gazing at the little figure lying in the crib, his eyes were filled with - tenderness.
Coincidentally, Pharrell woke up just then, opening his dark, bright eyes to look at him.
Alberto tried to play with him, but Pharrell didn't smile. Instead, he closed his eyes again, seemingly uninterested in engaging.
Alberto innocently rubbed his nose.
"He doesn't seem to like me."
Monica, who had been standing nearby, was startled and quickly said, "You're his father; how could he not like you?"
Alberto had just said it offhand, without giving it much thought. A child this young, what does he know about liking or not liking someone? But Monica, feeling guilty, couldn't help showing nervousness on her face.
Even though Alberto's attention was mostly on Pharrell, he now sensed something was off with her.
"What's wrong?" Alberto asked, his tone polite yet distant.
It was purely the polite concern one shows to an acquaintance.
"Huh? I, I'm fine," Monica said with a smile.
Since she said so, Alberto didn't dwell on it.
At the moment, Gracie had gone to the hospital to visit Isaac, Adeline and Joyce had gone out, and the nannies were waiting outside. The nursery only contained the two of them and Pharrell.
Monica felt this was a good opportunity to build a connection with Alberto.
She wanted to try to start a conversation with him.
But Alberto kept looking tenderly at Pharrell. For a moment, she had a feeling of peaceful, serene times.
And she couldn't bear to break that feeling.
If Pharrell's father were still here... he would surely be accompanying Pharrell just as gently.
He would never let her or Pharrell suffer any grievances.
Monica lowered her gaze, pushing away these thoughts.
Alberto's phone vibrated.
Afraid of disturbing Pharrell, he specifically went outside to take the call.
After a while, he returned and said, "Something came up; I have to leave now. I'll come back to see Pharrell tomorrow."
Monica was taken aback, asking disappointedly, "Leaving already?"
"I'm sorry, there's an unexpected situation today," Alberto said. "I'll definitely come back tomorrow and spend more time with Pharrell."
After speaking, he walked to the crib, bent down to kiss Pharrell, and then left.
Monica followed him a few steps toward the door but then felt she was being too obvious and forced herself to stop, watching helplessly as he left.
Actually, Alberto had been back for several hours already.
But now, before dusk even fell, he had to leave.
He didn't even wait for Gracie, Adeline, and the others to return.
What matter was so urgent?
The first thing Monica thought of was Connie.
That call just now was most likely from Connie.
Connie didn't want him to spend too much time with Pharrell, and even less did she want him to spend time with her.
So she called and made him leave.
Monica clenched her fingers tightly.
It's only the first day.
That woman Connie couldn't stand it
even on the first day. calling Alberto away. What will happen in the future?
As long as that woman is around, Alberto could never grow close to her, and might even start distancing himself from Pharrell.
Her Pharrell is the young master of the Mendoza family.
But if he is distanced by his "father," even with the love of others, it just wouldn't be the same...
Monica went back into the nursery, looked at the small bundle in the crib, and made a decision.
She called a nanny in to watch over Pharrell, then returned to her own room and found her other phone.
This phone was given to her by that man back then.
It only had one contact saved: him.
The man had instructed her to only use this phone to contact him.
To be safe, Monica even hid in the room's bathroom, locked the door, and only then dialed the number.
She waited for quite a while before the man answered.
And he seemed busy; she could hear several people discussing matters in the background.
Monica caught the words "the Mendoza Group, but didn't hear the rest clearly.
"What is it?" the man asked in a low voice.
Monica said, "Now that Pharrell and I are living with the Mendoza family, but after Alberto was discharged from the hospital, he went straight to live with that Connie person.
He only comes back daily to see Pharrell. Today was his first day back to see Pharrell, but he only stayed a few hours before a phone call made him leave. I suspect it was Connie who called him away."
The man gave a cold laugh and said, "Don't worry, it wasn't that woman. Right now, he has plenty of matters to keep him busy and stressed."
Monica was taken aback.
So it wasn't Connie?
Recalling the "Mendoza Group" she had just overheard, Monica guessed it was probably
related to matters concerning the Mendoza
Group.
"Are you causing trouble for the Mendoza
Group?"
With Isaac still hospitalized and Gracie having to split her time between visiting him and looking after her grandson at home, all matters of the Mendoza Group had fallen on Alberto's shoulders.
Ordinary matters were manageable, but if there were major issues, Alberto would definitely have to handle them personally.
"Don't ask about things you shouldn't," the man's voice turned cold.
Monica shrank back, then said, "Fine. Even if it wasn't Connie who called him away this time, as long as Connie is around, Alberto will never look at me twice."
"You're really useless," the man said coldly.
Monica felt humiliated. Having to seduce a man she didn't love and then being called useless by another man—it wasn't a pleasant feeling.
She forced herself to calm down and said, "It's not that l'm useless. Alberto and Connie have years of history; it's not something I can just insert myself into. As long as Connie is there, I can never get closer to Alberto."
The man thought for a moment and said, understand. I'll take care of this matter."
With that, the man hung up. Monica let out a sigh of relief.
Every time she spoke with this man, she always felt tense.
After coming out of the bathroom, she suddenly felt very uneasy again.
The man said he would handle it. How would he handle it?
He was so ruthless. Could it be that he would directly... get rid of Connie?
Monica didn't dare think further.
Although she found Connie annoying, she didn't want to see a life snuffed out just like that.
Moreover, if Connie died, she would be partially responsible. Wouldn't that make her one of the murderers?
But things had come to this point, and there was nothing she could do.
She gritted her teeth, forcing herself not to think about it.
Nothing was more important than her Pharrell.
Thomson Group, Yewhaina Branch.
Harrison had just finished a meeting and emerged from the conference room surrounded by a group of people.
His expression remained calm, but the senior executives of the branch following behind him were sweating profusely and trembling with fear.
