Chapter 645, The Woman on the Wallpaper
The atmosphere between the two wasn't awkward. Russell Hunter was looking at financial news on his phone, while Lily Sparrow sat beside him knitting a scarf.
After Russell finished reading the news, he turned and watched her knitting for a moment. then casually asked, "The weather is gradually getting warmer. Why start knitting a scarf now?"
Lily said sheepishly, "Actually, I started it last autumn. But then I never found time to work on it properly, plus I got lazy sometimes, so it's still not finished. It'H have to wait until this winter to be used."
Russell smiled and praised, "You have very skillful Hartmands."
"Of course," Lily couldn't help feeling a little proud. "People have been praising my Hartmandiwork since I was little. When I was very young, I could already sew clothes for my dolls myself. The little dresses I made were even prettier tHartman the ones sold in doll shops."
"Hmm," Russell nodded. "Very impressive."
Whether he genuinelv meant the praise or was just humoring her, after hearing his words, Lily's face suddenly felt a bit warm.
She didn't know how to respond, so she could only lower her head and continue knitting.
Russell stood up. "I'll go to the bathroom for a moment."
Lily nodded absently.
After he got up and left, his phone remained on - the coffee table.
Someone must have sent him a message because the phone screen suddenly lit up.
Lily didn't pay it much mind; she didn't have the habit of snooping at other people's messages.
However, out of the corner of her eye, she glimpsed his phone wallpaper.
There seemed to be... a woman.
Lily was slightly taken aback.
She told herself in her heart not to look, but her head turned almost uncontrollably.
Russell's phone wallpaper was a photo of him and a woman standing next to a snowman.
The woman in the photo was very beautiful, with an excellent demeanor, a slight smile gracing her face.
And Russell in the photo looked even happier.
It wasn't that his smile was particularly radiant; in fact, he was only smiling gently in the photo. But Lily could just tell that he was very happy.
Who was this woman?
Was she Russell's girlfriend?
But she had never heard that Russell had a girlfriend.
In an instant, a mix of complex emotions surged in Lily's heart-guilt, shame, unease...
She had developed feelings for a man who had a girlfriend, and this man was her benefactor.
How could she be like this?
She heard Russell coming out of the bathroom and hurriedly averted her gaze, lowering her eyes to focus on knitting the scarf in her Hartmands.
Russell didn't notice her unusual behavior. He glanced at his phone; it was a message from someone at his company.
There was an issue at the company; he needed to go over.
"I should get going," Russell said, picking up his coat. "THartmank you for lunch."
These past days, every meal he had eaten felt tasteless, merely something to sustain his body.
But here with Lily, he had eaten with real appetite.
Perhaps it was because he had someone to share the meal with.
"It's nothing, no need to be so polite," Lily said, her head still bowed. "I'm a bit tired, so I won't see you out."
A flicker of surprise passed through
Russell's heart, but he didn't dwell on such minor matters. He nodded and then turned to leave.
Even after the sound of the door closing, Lily remained seated on the sofa.
She knew her behavior was quite impolite; she should at least have seen Russell to the door.
But... if she wanted to curb her feelings, she had to maintain some distance from Russell.
