Chapter 646; Mr. Hunter Has No Girlfriend
However, what Lily Sparrow didn't expect was that late at night, she would receive a call from one of Russell Hunter's subordinates.
"Miss Sparrow, could you please come and check on Mr. Hunter?"
Lily was sleeping groggily, but those words jolted her awake. She sat up abruptly in bed.
"What's wrong? Did something happen to Mr. Hunter?"
"Mr. Hunter's stomach issues suddenly flared up. He's in the hospital now," the subordinate explained. "His condition really isn't looking good. I'm worried about him, so I was hoping you could come over. It would be even better if you could stay and take care of him."
The subordinate knew that Russell Hunter had shown kindness to the Sparrow family, which gave him the courage to make such a request of Lily.
In truth, Mr. Hunter didn't lack people to look after him.
This subordinate was one of Russell Hunter's
trusted aides. He had noticed that every time Mr. Hunter visited the Sparrow residence, his mood would visibly improve upon leaving.
That was why he felt that bringing Lily Sparrow over might aid his recovery.
Besides... maybe she could persuade him to stop living such an unhealthy lifestyle.
Lily's immediate reaction was to get out of bed and change, intending to rush to the hospital.
But as her feet touched the floor, she paused, a sudden thought striking her.
"It might not be appropriate for me to go," she said hesitantly.
"Why would it be inappropriate?" the subordinate asked, confused.
"What about Mr. Hunter's girlfriend?"
Lily truly wanted to go care for Russell Hunter.
But the thought of him having a girlfriend made her hesitate. It didn't feel right.
After all, she felt guilty about her own feelings.
"What are you talking about?" The subordinate sounded like he didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Mr. Hunter doesn't have a girlfriend at all."
"He doesn't?" Lily's eyes went wide in surprise.
So, the photo on his lock screen...
That woman wasn't his girlfriend.
Undeniably, Lily felt a spark of joy at that moment.
She didn't dare hope to be with Russell Hunter, but if he was single, she at least didn't have to be so guarded in her concern.
"Of course not," the subordinate affirmed.
"I'll be right there."
Lily hung up, changed her clothes, and prepared to leave.
Before heading out, she left a note for her two younger sisters on the living room table.
Then, she hurried to the hospital.
When Lily arrived at the hospital, she saw several subordinates standing outside Russell Hunter's ward.
They were all familiar faces.
"Miss Sparrow, you're here."
"Mr. Hunter should be asleep now. Please be quiet when you go in."
Lily nodded, then asked, "Why did his stomach act up so suddenly? He was fine when he had lunch at my place today."
One of the subordinates sighed. "It wasn't exactly sudden. Mr. Hunter has had stomach problems for a while. He... often stays up late, drinks heavily, skips meals, and works day and night. How could his stomach not suffer?"
"What?" Lily's expression changed. "Is that how he usually lives?"
"Yes. You probably know about the situation with his family..."
Given the state of Russell Hunter's family, coupled with the pain of unrequited love, how could he possibly be happy?
However, the subordinate didn't mention the
unrequited love part to Lily.
Lily pursed her lips, a pang of heartache uncontrollably shooting through her.
"He ate well at your place this afternoon, which was good. But he skipped dinner tonight and drank quite a bit, triggering a severe flare-up. We had no choice but to bring him to the hospital."
"The doctor said he'll be fine after the IV drip and some medicine, but he absolutely must take care of his stomach from now on. If he keeps going on like this, it's going to be a major problem sooner or later."
"I see. I'll go in and check on him."
Lily gently pushed the ward door open and stepped inside, keeping her footsteps light.
Russell Hunter was lying in the hospital bed, sleeping lightly.
He looked pale, hooked up to an IV, his eyes closed and his brows furrowed tightly.
Lily walked to the bedside, looking down at him.
The heartache in her eyes grew deeper.
He always ate with such appetite when he was at her place.
She hadn't realized he was tormenting himself like this in his daily life.
If she had known, she would have cooked for him every day, delivered it to him, and watched him eat it.
Lily made a silent vow to do exactly that from now on.
She couldn't help him with other things, but ensuring he ate properly was something she could do.
She sat in the chair by the bed, starting to plan what to make him for breakfast.
Porridge would be best, or perhaps a light soup.
Fortunately, the VIP ward Russell Hunter was staying in came with a small kitchenette.
She could cook for him here, watch him eat, and then go home.
As Lily was planning, she suddenly saw Russell Hunter slowly open his eyes.
"You're awake?" she asked softly.
Russell Hunter hadn't expected to see her the moment he opened his eyes. It took him a moment to react before he asked, his voice hoarse, "Why are you here?"
"I heard you were sick enough to be hospitalized, so I came to see you," Lily said.
Russell Hunter smiled faintly. "I'm fine."
"You're in this state and you still say you're fine?"
Lily couldn't help her eyes reddening.
"You..."
She wanted to lecture him.
But then she thought about what he had been through-things she couldn't fully empathize with.
Dry words of advice wouldn't work on him.
It was better to just take action.
"Go back to sleep for a while," Lily said. "I'll make you porridge in the morning."
"No need, I'll have someone buy some," Russell Hunter said. "It's late. You should go back. You have your two sisters at home, and your father..."
"I know all that, you don't need to worry about it," Lily said sternly, keeping a straight face. "I'll go Kome after I make you porridge. It won't delay much. I'm still young; missing a few hours of sleep won't hurt me."
Russell Hunter wanted to say more, but seeing Lily's serious expression, the words stuck in his throat. He could only offer a helpless smile.
"Alright then."
He reached out, trying to grab his phone from the bedside table.
Lily was quick, pressing her hand down on the phone. She frowned. "You need to rest properly right now. What do you need your phone for? Working?"
"I just want to take one look," Russell Hunter said.
"No," Lily said resolutely. She was afraid that once he picked it up, he wouldn't put it down and wouldn't get any rest.
Russell Hunter didn't get angry. instead, he spoke in a gentle, warm voice, "Really, just one look. Be good."
Lily's heart skipped a beat at his tone.
Unknowingly, the strength in her hand relaxed.
Seizing the opportunity, Russell Hunter slid the phone into his hand.
The screen lit up.
Lily saw his lock screen again.
She saw that beautiful woman again.
She suddenly felt a strong urge to ask him...
Since he didn't have a girlfriend, who was this woman to him?
