Chapter 618 We Haven't Broken Up Yet
"I don't really feel like letting you in right now," Connie Miller said, forcing back the heartache.
"And there's nothing much for us to talk about."
A flicker of disappointment crossed Alberto
Mendoza's eyes.
"I'm sorry," he said softly.
These three words almost shattered all the defenses Connie had built around her heart.
She desperately wanted to harden her heart, but she couldn't bring herself to be completely cold towards him. Moreover, she was worried about his injuries not being fully healed, afraid that standing for too long would make his leg hurt.
"Fine," she said. "Come in first.”
Alberto had thought there was no hope.
Hearing her say this suddenly filled him with immense joy. Fearing she might change her mind, he quickly stepped into the room.
Connie closed the door. Seeing him standing there obediently, she felt a slight urge to laugh.
"Aren't you going to sit down? What are you waiting for? Want to have our chat standing up?"
Alberto really wanted to hug her.
But considering the current situation, he suppressed the impulse and sat down on the sofa.
Connie had been watching his leg. Seeing he still walked with a slight limp, she couldn't help but frown.
"Why did you come to my place right after being discharged instead of going home to rest?" Her tone was reproachful, but her eyes held concern she couldn't hide. "What if your injuries get worse? You're a grown man, how can you still not know how to take care of yourself?"
Even though he was being scolded, Alberto smiled.
"Maybe you should scold me a few more times."
Connie was both annoyed and amused by him.
"Alberto Mendoza, are you a masochist?"
The more she scolded him, the happier Alberto felt.
The fact that she would still scold him meant that, at least when facing him, she still had emotions.
If she were truly utterly indifferent to him, not even wanting to say an extra word to him, then that would mean they were really finished.
"Connie, come sit here. Let's have a proper talk, okay?" Alberto asked, his face full of entreaty.
Connie sighed and finally walked over to sit beside him.
Since she had already let him in, then talking about their relationship was unavoidable.
As soon as she sat down, Alberto couldn't help but take her hand.
"Connie, we haven't broken up, right?"
Connie lowered her gaze, silent.
Alberto held his breath, waiting for her answer.
After a short while, Connie finally spoke.
"Not yet, but..."
"Don't say 'but'!" Alberto interrupted her urgently, reaching out to pull her into his arms.
"Connie, I don't want to break up with you. From beginning to end, you are the only one I've loved."
"But the fact remains that you have a child with another woman," Connie said with a bitter smile.
"Alberto... even though it happened during our break-up period, put yourself in my shoes. If I had a child with another man during our separation, how would you feel now?"
"I know, I know all of it," Alberto said painfully.
"I... have no right to demand that you must stay by my side, that you must accept all of this. I just don't want to end things like this.."
He just didn't want to part ways with Connie in this unclear, unresolved manner.
He at least had to make his true feelings clear to her. Even if they ultimately had to separate, he should at least bid her a proper farewell and wish her a smooth, worry-free life ahead, hoping she would meet a man... who truly loved her and would make her happy.
Connie's eyes felt sore.
Actually, when she left the Mendoza family before, it wasn't because she wanted to break up with Alberto immediately. She just needed to be alone, to calm down and think carefully about What she should do, what she wanted to do.
But after thinking for several days, she still hadn't reached a conclusion.
After waking up this morning, she understood.
The reason she couldn't figure it out was because she still couldn't let go of Alberto.
She didn't want to leave him.
Otherwise, she would have made up her mind long ago.
Alberto took a deep breath and said, "Connie, whatever your final decision is, I hope you'll let me finish speaking first..."
"Okay, go ahead."
"Pharrell is my child. I have to take responsibility as a father. That cannot change," Alberto said. "As for Monica, the Mendoza familv will ensure she is well-provided for her entire life, even if she lives extravagantly. That's not a problem. But I will not be with her."
Connie's eyelashes trembled slightly.
Alberto continued, "There were never any feelings between us. That... was indeed a reckless night for me, but I have absolutely no memory of it. And she has said that all she seeks is Pharrell's well-being. Now she and Pharrell live with the Mendozas. As for me, I can move out of the Mendoza residence and live with you."
"What?" Connie hadn't expected him to say this.
"You..."
"I don't want to let you down," Alberto gazed at her, his eyes full of sincerity. "What happened in the past has already occurred; I can't change it. But I want to do everything I can to make it up to you, to stay by your side."
Connie said with a bitter smile, "But if you do that, what kind of person does that make me? You also said Pharrell is your child, and you need to take responsibility as a father."
"This is my own decision," Alberto said. "It's not for you; it's for myself. I want to stay by your side because I can't live without you."
"That's not really the main point..."
"I know, you're thinking about Pharrell," Alberto's face showed a complex mix of emotions. "I will visit him often. I won't be absent from his upbringing."
Connie gently fiddled with the cufflink on his sleeve.
Deep down, she knew.
The future was full of variables; it wouldn't be as simple as Alberto described.
As she had said before, Alberto and Monica would always be connected by their child... their child together.
Even if Alberto never fell in love with Monica, for the child's sake, the two of them would inevitably have many interactions.
When that time came, could she really manage not to mind at all?
But right now, she couldn't bring herself to reject Alberto.
She knew Alberto wouldn't force her.
If she insisted on breaking up now, Alberto wouldn't force her to stay.
But she... didn't want to leave him.
As for the future, let's deal with it when it comes.
At least for now, she wanted to cherish every moment with Alberto.
"Connie..."
"Don't say anymore." Connie raised her hand to cover his mouth, her eyes reddening.
"I'm hungry.
Have you had breakfast?"
A glimmer of delight flashed in Alberto's eyes. He knew Connie saying this meant she was willing to continue being with him.
That's wonderful...
He knew this meant asking her to accept less than she deserved.
So in the future, he would definitely treat her even better, to make it up to her.
"Hurry up and answer. Have you eaten?"
Connie asked, her voice muffled. "If you have, l'll go eat by myself."
"Mmm..."
Alberto lowered his gaze slightly. Connie then realized she was still covering his mouth.
