Chapter 602: Go Pay Your Respects At Her Grave
If he could, Rogelio Hunter really didn't want to bring up Jasmine Hunter with Russell Hunter.
But he had no choice now.
He simply couldn't reach Jasmine Hunter or
Warren Chiang.
It was highly likely they were now in Russell
Hunter's hands.
Russell Hunter let out a cold laugh. "You're that concerned about her?"
"Zhilin, so she is with you, isn't she?" Rogelio Hunter said. "I know you hate her. She has indeed done many things she shouldn't have. But she is still your aunt. Please, let her go. Send her back to me. I'll keep a close watch on her and never let her cause trouble for you again."
"Return to Orianto," Russell Hunter said abruptly.
"What?"
Rogelio Hunter was confused. They were talking about Jasmine Hunter; why was Russell suddenly telling him to return to Orianto?
"Go pay your respects at my mother's grave," Russell Hunter continued. "Bring her favorite flowers and fruits."
The more he spoke like this, the more terrified Rogelio Hunter became, to the point he was momentarily speechless.
"What? Don't want to go? Or have you already forgotten what my mother's favorite flowers and fruits were?" Russell Hunter asked, his tone laced with sarcasm.
Rogelio Hunter was now sweating profusely, his heart ice-cold. Forcing himself, he found his voice again. "Of course not... It's just... I already visited your mother's grave before I went abroad. I'm curious why you're suddenly asking me to go again."
"No particular reason," Russell Hunter said.
Rogelio Hunter, too panicked, couldn't hold back any longer. "Did Jasmine Hunter say something to you? She's a madwoman! Don't listen to her!"
The words were out before he could stop them.
He immediately regretted it. He was so flustered he'd lost his head. Saying something like that was practically an admission of guilt.
Russell Hunter's eyes darkened, but his expression remained neutral, even casual.
"Why would you think that?"
Rogelio Hunter could only try to cover his tracks.
"Because I know Jasmine Hunter too well. To save herself, she'd dare say anything."
"I have no interest in discussing Jasmine Hunter's character with you. I want you to return to Orianto immediately and visit my mother's grave. If you don't go voluntarily, I'll have no choice but to have someone escort you back."
Rogelio Hunter's voice trembled. "You know where I am...?"
Russell Hunter knew his location? And he thought he had been so discreet. It turned out Russell Hunter had been in control all along.
Russell Hunter snorted coldly, said nothing more to Rogelio Hunter, and hung up the phone.
After leaving Russell Hunter's room, Harrison Thomson returned to Adeline Hensley and recounted his conversation with Russell.
Adeline Hensley said, "Warren Chiang's disappearance definitely wasn't our doing."
"I know," Harrison Thomson said, ruffling her hair. As the Mendoza family's acknowledged future son-in-law, if something like that had happened, someone would have told him, let alone the fact that Adeline herself was a Mendoza.
"But what connection could Monica possibly have with Warren Chiang?" Adeline wondered aloud.
Just then, she saw Monica walking towards them.
A sudden thought struck her. She leaned closer to Harrison Thomson and whispered, "Could it be that Warren Chiang accidentally learned something he shouldn't have, and that's why he was taken?"
Harrison Thomson considered it. "It's possible."
As they spoke, Monica arrived. She was still very afraid of Harrison Thomson and barely dared to look at him, offering Adeline a slightly ingratiating smile instead.
"I... I wanted to see Alberto. Is that alright?"
Adeline Hensley said, "My brother is right inside. You can go in if you want."
At this point, preventing Monica from seeing Alberto Mendoza was pointless. Moreover, the two of them really needed to talk properly about the future and how to handle things.
"Thank you," Monica said gratefully.
She walked to Alberto Mendoza's door and knocked. Hearing him say "Come in," she pushed the door open and entered.
Alberto Mendoza hadn't expected the visitor to be her. He was momentarily stunned upon seeing her, his gaze darkening. But in the end, he didn't tell her to leave. He was also acutely aware that avoiding Monica forever wasn't a solution.
Monica closed the door, nervously twisting her fingers before walking over to Alberto.
"Alberto, are you feeling better?"
Alberto Mendoza said coldly, "I'm fine."
Then, feeling that such a tone wasn't appropriate for speaking to the mother of his child, he softened his voice slightly. "My injuries are almost healed."
"That's good," Monica said with a careful smile.
"Pharrell... have you held him yet?"
Alberto Mendoza nodded silently.
"Have a seat," Alberto said. "No need to stand while we talk."
Monica subtly breathed a sigh of relief. She moved to sit next to Alberto Mendoza, but before she could get close, she heard him say, "You can sit there." He pointed to a single armchair nearby.
A flicker of disappointment passed through
Monica's eyes. But she didn't want to seem too eager and risk annoying him. So, as instructed, she obediently sat down in the armchair.
Alberto Mendoza, looking at the floor, said, "I think we need to have a proper talk about what happened between us, and about Pharrell!."
Monica's heart leaped into her throat.
"I don't want to be separated from Pharrell," Monica pleaded. "Alberto, he's my son. I can't bear to be apart from him. Please, don't separate us..."
Alberto Mendoza was silent for a moment before saying, "I have no intention of separating you. You are Pharrell's mother. I have no right to do that."
A hint of a smile appeared on Monica's face, but then she heard Alberto continue, "However, it's impossible for us to be together."
Monica's smile instantly froze on her face.
"What happened before was my fault, a drunken mistake. I'm sorry. I can give you any compensation you want," Alberto Mendoza added. "I was thinking, after Pharrell recovers, he should still live with you. I will cover all living expenses for both of you, and I will visit Pharrell often to fulfill my responsibilities as a father. Do you agree?"
Monica was momentarily at a loss for how to respond.
Her silence told Alberto Mendoza she wasn't very willing.
After another brief silence, he said, "You know that Connie and I broke up before and have only recently managed to get back together. I love her very much. I don't want to be separated from her again."
"I never meant to come between you!"
Monica said hurriedly. "But... but judging by Miss Miller's attitude, she might not accept Pharrell. Even if Pharrell doesn't live with the Mendoza family in the future, will she accept you visiting him often? And if Pharrell lives with me, and you come to see him, what if she misunderstands and thinks there's something going on between you and me..."
