Chapter 564: Nothing Is Impossible
At the sound of Memphis's voice, Adeline's eyes grew slightly red.
Gracie had already fallen asleep.
Adeline said lightly, "Yes. We'll all be alright."
She quietly tucked her in, making sure she was comfortable before stepping out of her room.
Memphis and his team had already been assigned rooms.
When Adeline found him, Memphis was busy organizing the patrol shifts for both day and night.
She stood quietly by, waiting until he finished giving his instructions and the others had left before approaching him.
"Mr. Shannon."
Memphis turned immediately upon hearing her voice.
"Miss Hensley," he greeted politely.
"I still want to thank you for everything you've done," Adeline said sincerely.
She was fully aware of the strength of the organization they were facing.
Without Memphis and his team, the Mendoza family might not have been able to rescue Gracie, and they could have lost even more people.
Even though Memphis was here because of Harrison, it was still Memphis and his men who took action, so Adeline felt it was only right to express her gratitude.
Memphis understood her unspoken words and nodded, acknowledging her thanks without adding anything further.
"I have one more thing I need to ask," Adeline said.
"Please, go ahead."
"You came from the hospital, right? How are my father and brother?"
Adeline had been worried that Alberto had kept her in the dark to avoid worrying her.
When she had asked Gracie earlier, Gracie had said Isaac was out of danger and that Alberto was fine.
Adeline believed Isaac was fine.
But she wasn't sure if Alberto had lied to her.
Memphis's expression became serious as he replied, "Your father's injuries were quite severe, but he's out of danger now. You don't need to worry. As for your brother, he's perfectly fine."
Adeline was quiet for a moment.
His words mirrored Gracie's exactly, and there was no sign of guilt on his face.
Adeline sighed in relief but felt a wave of guilt and frustration. "Mr. Shannon, are you sure you're not hiding something from me? You know, I can't go to the hospital and check on them, and it's already so hard for me. If I don't know their real situation, I'm just going to feel uneasy."
Memphis clenched his fists.
He glanced at Adeline, feeling a twinge of sympathy.
But when he had left the hospital, he had
promised Alberto not to tell her the truth.
As a man, he understood Alberto's feelings.
But Adeline was Harrison's girlfriend, and Harrison had asked him to come help.
If he lied to Adeline, it was like lying to Harrison, and he couldn't do that.
Adeline's sharp gaze caught the slight hesitation in Memphis, and she pressed on, "So, Alberto did get hurt, didn't he?"
Memphis's face hardened, and he replied, "Miss Hensley, don't keep asking."
He turned and began to walk away.
Adeline's heart clenched.
The truth was evident now. Alberto was hurt, and likely badly.
If Alberto wasn't in serious trouble, he wouldn't have hidden it from her or from Connie.
She felt overwhelmed, torn between wanting to rush to the hospital and being unable to.
She couldn't add to the chaos.
Memphis stopped, but didn't look back as he said, "Don't worry. Your father and brother will be fine. They'll be back with you soon."
After he said that, he left.
Adeline exhaled deeply. His words, while simple, brought her a little peace.
Even if Alberto was seriously injured, at least his life wasn't at risk.
Suddenly, Connie's voice broke through her thoughts.
"Adeline, what are you doing here?"
Adeline jumped and turned to face Connie, feeling a momentary flash of guilt.
She had just spoken to Memphis about Alberto.
Now, here was Connie, and she was unsure whether to tell her the truth about Alberto.
Adeline chose not to, not wanting to make Connie even more worried.
"I was just talking to Mr. Shannon for a bit, thanking him for his help," Adeline said with a smile, trying to cover her nervousness.
Connie, completely unaware, smiled brightly and walked with Adeline, arms in arms.
"He seems so capable. Is he someone Mr.
Thomson brought in? That means Mr. Thomson must be even more amazing, being able to get someone like that to help."
"By the way, I wonder how he's doing? When will he be able to come and be with you?"
At the mention of Harrison, Adeline's arm stiffened for a split second.
Connie, realizing what she'd said, quickly apologized. "Sorry, Adeline, I didn't mean to bring it up."
"It's alright," Adeline said softly, smiling. "He said he'll be fine, and I trust him."
"Of course," Connie nodded vigorously. "Mr.
Thomson is so powerful. There's no way anything could happen to him. Maybe after you get some rest tonight, you'll wake up and find him sitting right beside you!"
Adeline chuckled, amused at how Connie
exaggerated things. "How could that happen?"
"Hah, there's nothing impossible in this world," Connie said with a grin.
Though Adeline didn't believe it, that night, as she lay in bed, she couldn't help but entertain the thought.
Maybe, just maybe, when she woke up tomorrow, Harrison would be right there beside her.
But then again, if that were the case, would he be safe? The organization still hadn't been wiped out, and if Harrison came to Yewhaina, he could easily become a target.
Her heart ached with both hope and worry.
And with her mind still wrapped around Isaac and Alberto, she finally fell into a restless sleep.
It wasn't until nearly 2 a.m. that she drifted off.
By the time she woke up, the sky had just begun to lighten.
She turned quickly, only to find her bed empty.
With a quiet sigh, she realized that Connie's comforting words were just that-comforting words.
She had let herself hope, but deep down, she knew better.
She smiled wistfully to herself.
How she missed Harrison.
After getting dressed, she went downstairs.
A few maids were cleaning the living room and greeted her.
After responding, Adeline's mind suddenly flicked back to Camilla, who was still locked up.
Now that Gracie was back, she needed to discuss with her what to do about Camilla.
"Has Mom gotten up yet?" Adeline asked.
One of the maids answered, "Mrs. Mendoza got up early and is already in the kitchen making breakfast."
"Mom? Cooking breakfast?" she thought.
Curious, Adeline went to the kitchen.
