Chapter 556: You're Crying?
No one else was thinking of letting Camilla off the hook, so why should Adeline show any mercy?
Camilla had come with the intent to hurt her and her family.
If Adeline hadn't caught onto her, she would have drunk that cup of coffee without a second thought.
Who knew what could've happened then?
Adeline was already frustrated. Camilla had brought this trouble upon herself.
Sitting in the chair, Adeline massaged her temple, feeling the weight of her headache.
Gracie should be fine for now, but what about two days from now?
The man had already spoken his mind, and he wouldn't back down so easily.
If they still hadn't found Gracie by then, she would be in danger.
Her fingers tightened into fists.
It wasn't that she was trying to put herself in harm's way, but she couldn't just ignore her mother's life.
In moments like this, Adeline really wished Harrison were there.
But his matter wasn't wrapped up yet.
Even if she tried calling, he probably wouldn't be able to answer.
Adeline looked down at her phone, a bitter smile playing at her lips.
The pressure had been too much lately.
If she could just see him, even hear his voice, it would be a great help.
Just as she thought that, her phone rang.
The display showed an unfamiliar number-a local Orianto number.
Adeline's heart skipped a beat, fearing something had happened. She quickly picked up the call.
To her surprise, it was a voice she knew all too well.
"Adeline."
The man's voice was gentle, laced with restrained longing.
Adeline froze, her mind racing.
She hadn't expected Harrison to be the one calling.
"You..." she barely managed to whisper before her tears betrayed her.
She didn't want him to hear her cry and didn't want him to worry, so she choked back her sobs, forcing her voice to remain steady.
"How are you calling me?" she asked.
"Aren't you... Aren't you being held captive?"
Despite her attempts to hide it, Harrison could tell something was wrong.
"You're crying?" he asked softly.
Adeline, trying to act tough, snapped, "Don't be ridiculous... I'm not crying."
The more she denied it, the more tears spilled from her eyes. Her voice cracked as the dam she was holding back broke completely.
"Adeline, don't cry," Harrison murmured, his voice full of tenderness. "Don't worry, everything's been taken care of on my end. I'm fine. Look, I'm still able to call you."
Adeline knew deep down he would be fine. This was Harrison, after all.
He had promised her that he would be fine.
But no matter how much she trusted him, he was the one person she couldn't stop worrying about.
He was the one she loved, and she couldn't heip the fear that tightened in her chest.
She couldn't deny the intense longing she felt when hearing his voice again.
"I'll be done here in a couple of days," Harrison continued. "Then I'll come get you."
Adeline's heart skipped a beat. Panic flooded her chest as she instinctively said, "Don't come yet...”
The organization was still keeping an eye on her.
If Harrison came now, they might target him too.
She knew he was strong, but she also knew their methods were unpredictable.
She didn't want him anywhere near danger.
Harrison immediately picked up on her unease.
"What's wrong?" he asked. "Did something happen?"
He had already sent people to Yewhaina to protect Adeline.
But with the situation being so complicated on his side, his men hadn't been able to reach him.
He had no idea what was really going on with Adeline at this moment.
Thinking back on the things Adeline had told him, Harrison pressed, "Is it the organization? What did they do?"
Fearing that Adeline might hide the truth from him, he added, "Don't lie to me, Adeline. I'll have someone look into it, and they'll find out for sure. There should be no secrets between us."
Not wanting to hide anything from him, but also remembering what Isaac had warned her about, Adeline finally said, "They took my mom."
Harrison's breath hitched, his worry escalating.
Adeline didn't even need to say anything for him to know how devastated she must feel.
"Don't worry. She'll be fine," he reassured her. "I'll send people to help right away."
Adeline let out a shaky breath, and Harrison's voice softened. "Adeline, do you trust me?"
Her tears surged again, and she whispered, "Of course I do."
Hearing his voice again had a calming effect on her anxious heart.
"T'll be done here in a few days, and then Im coming to you," Harrison added firmly. "No arguing."
He knew Adeline was worried about him, but if he didn't do this now, then what kind of boyfriend was he?
"Fine," Adeline sniffed, wiping her eyes. "I know you won't listen even if I tell you not to come."
But deep down, she couldn't help but feel happy.
She was worried about him, but hearing that he cared enough to come made her feel secure.
People were contradictory creatures, after all.
"Good," Harrison chuckled. "Now, what you need to do is get some sleep. I'm sure you haven't had a proper rest in ages."
Adeline's heart softened even further, despite the ache in her chest.
Since Gracie had been taken, she hadn't slept.
Coffee had been the only thing keeping her going.
She had tried to rest, but with her eyes closed, her mind wouldn't stop racing, thinking about Gracie's and Harrison's safety.
Harrison, hearing the silence on the other end of the line, sighed. "I knew it."
"I'll go to sleep in a bit," Adeline said. "But if anything comes up on your side, tell me right away. And if you're coming, let me know in
advance, and I'll send someone to pick you up."
"Got it," Harrison agreed. "But you should stay at home. Don't go out, okay?"
"Don't worry, I won't."
After a pause, neither of them seemed ready to hang up.
It was as if neither could bear to break the connection.
Finally, Harrison spoke again. "Adeline... I know we shouldn't apologize to each other right now, but just want to say, I'm so sorry. I wish I could be with you right now."
Adeline's voice was steady when she responded, "If you really feel sorry for me, then just make sure you come back safe and sound."
"Of course," Harrison promised.
Adeline's heart lightened, her face softening.
