One night stand with my president(chapter 599)

Chapter 599: She Isn't a Tool to Make Me Happy

He seemed fine the last time she saw him.

How did he suddenly faint?

Adeline Hensley asked a nurse for details.

The nurse said Russell Hunter had suffered a severe shock, leading to a sudden surge of anger and distress that caused him to faint.

It wasn't considered serious, but he still needed a few days of proper rest.

A severe shock?

Adeline frowned slightly.

What kind of shock could be so severe?

By coincidence, Russell Hunter's hospital room was on the same floor as Alberto Mendoza's.

As Adeline went to visit Alberto, she passed by Russell Hunter's room.

The door was open.

She saw Russell Hunter half-sitting up in the bed.

He was looking out the window.

His face was pale, and the hospital gown added to his sickly, fragile appearance.

Adeline hesitated but ultimately didn't go in.

Even if she were to visit Russell Hunter, it would be better to go with Harrison Thomson.

Just then, one of Russell Hunter's subordinates arrived with some freshly bought congee and spotted her immediately.

"Ms. Hensley," he greeted.

Hearing this, Russell Hunter immediately turned his head, his gaze meeting Adeline's directly.

Adeline had no choice but to nod at him. Still, she didn't enter the room, instead turning to the subordinate and asking, "How is Mr. Hunter now?"

The subordinate gave an ambiguous answer:

"Not well. Mr. Hunter just learned some... very bad news."

Then he added, "Ms. Hensley, if you went in to see him, he might feel a lot better."

Adeline smiled and said, "I understand. I'll come by later."

"Ms. Hensley..."

The subordinate quickly moved to block her path. "Could you go see him now? Just for a moment."

This subordinate was shrewd; he knew Russell Hunter had always held feelings for Adeline Hensley and worried she was just brushing him off and wouldn't actually come back later, so he was reluctant to let her leave.

However, at that moment, Russell Hunter spoke up: "Didn't you buy me congee? Bring it in."

The subordinate was taken aback. He glanced at Russell Hunter and instantly understood his meaning.

Russell Hunter didn't want to pressure Adeline Hensley.

He also didn't want his subordinate blocking her from leaving.

"Mr. Hunter..."

"Bring it in," Russell Hunter's tone brooked no argument.

The subordinate had no choice but to step aside. for Adeline, then walked directly into Russell Hunter's room.

After he set the congee down and looked back, Adeline Hensley was already gone.

"Mr. Hunter, why didn't you let her come in just now to see you and talk with you?" the subordinate said helplessly. "You're feeling so down right now. If you could chat with Ms.

Hensley more, it would surely lift your spirits a bit."

"She isn't a tool to make me happy," Russell Hunter said mildly. "She's free to do things if she's willing. If she isn't, that's her right."

Moreover, he had wronged her before.

The subordinate, seeing his state, felt heartbroken and added, "But Ms. Hensley just asked me about your condition. She does care about you, after all."

Russell Hunter smiled but said nothing more, silently eating his congee.

He knew that even if Adeline Hensley did care, it was only because of their past friendship.

By now, he understood that the bond between Harrison Thomson and Adeline Hensley couldn't be broken by anyone.

He no longer held any illusions.

After a few spoonfuls of congee, Russell Hunter lost his appetite and handed the bowl back to his subordinate.

The subordinate took it, set it aside, and said, "We have Jasmine Hunter under control now; she can't escape. But... what about your father?"

They actually knew Rogelio Hunter's whereabouts perfectly well.

But since regaining consciousness, Russell Hunter hadn't said whether he intended to go after Rogelio.

That man was his mother's murderer...

All the previous incidents paled in comparison to this.

The subordinate knew full well how important Russell Hunter's late mother was to him.

But Rogelio Hunter was also his father.

Russell Hunter's sudden collapse showed just how much pain he was in.

After a long moment, Russell Hunter spoke, his voice hoarse: "Have people keep a close watch on him for now."

No matter what, he had to investigate the truth about what happened back then.

It was laughable, really.

Even now, he still clung to a sliver of hope-hope that Jasmine Hunter had lied to him, hope that Rogelio Hunter had nothing to do with his mother's death.

If Rogelio Hunter really had killed his mother, then what did his mother's love and unwavering trust in Rogelio all those years mean?

Russell Hunter's heart ached as if pierced by needles.

"Wahh..."

Suddenly, the sound of crying came from the hospital room doorway.

It was followed by the scolding voice of another one of Russell Hunter's subordinates: "What are  you trying to do? Get away from here!"

Then came a girl's apologetic voice: "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.."

"What's going on?" Russell Hunter raised his voice to ask.

"Mr. Hunter, a young girl came to the door and just started crying. It seems strange," the subordinate at the door replied.

The girl's voice spoke up again: "I'm sorry. I just suddenly remembered... my father is seriously ill, but our family's money is almost gone. We're about to be kicked out of the hospital... I couldn't help but cry."

Hearing this, Russell Hunter said to the subordinate beside him, "Give her some money."

The subordinate seemed to want to say something but stopped himself.

In the end, he said nothing and turned to go out.

A moment later, they heard the girl's voice thanking them.

The subordinate came back in, looking utterly exasperated. "That girl, the momerit she got the money, said thank you and ran off faster than a rabbit."

Russell Hunter smiled slightly but didn't comment.

The subordinate couldn't hold back any longer.

"Mr. Hunter, that was obviously a scam. Why did you still tell me to give her money?"

Even he could see it, let alone Russell Hunter.

"What if it was true? Consider it a good deed," Russell Hunter said. "And, she's a fellow countrywoman. In a foreign land like this, if we can help, we should."

He had glanced out the door earlier and vaguely seen the girl had East Asian features.

Moreover, when she first apologized, she was speaking Yewhainan. But the moment she heard him and the bodyguard conversing in Chinese, she immediately switched to Chinese herself, speaking it fluently and without an accent.

Even if she weren't a fellow countrywoman, helping her wasn't a bad thing, given how well she spoke Chinese.

Hearing this, the subordinate said no more.

After all, that amount of money meant nothing to Russell Hunter. If he wanted to give it, so be it.

Last night, to reassure Adeline Hensley, Harrison Thomson hadn't gone back.

Instead, he stayed in Alberto Mendoza's room, keeping an eye on him to prevent him from doing anything rash in a moment of impulse.

However, Alberto had remained calm throughout the night, showing no unusual behavior.

Seeing Adeline, he asked in a hoarse voice, "How was Connie last night?"
