Chapter 573: Don't You Dare Make Excuses
Seeing Connie's face, Adeline instantly understood what was going on.
"Did he tell you everything?" she asked.
Connie nodded, her voice trembling as she replied, "He didn't tell me until now. Adeline, I want to go to the hospital to take care of him... Is that alright?"
"Of course," Adeline said warmly, "We'll send someone to escort you."
Alberto had only felt safe telling Connie after Harrison had guaranteed her protection.
He knew that once Connie found out about his injuries, she would insist on going to the hospital to care for him.
But he couldn't risk her safety. If she went without protection and something happened on the way, he couldn't bear it.
It wasn't that the Mendoza family couldn't handle it, but they were still recovering from the aftermath of Gracie's rescue.
Their strength was drained, and now with
Harrison's guarantee, he could rest easier.
"Thank you." Connie wiped her eyes, trying to smile. "I'll go pack some things, then head to the hospital."
"Alright," Adeline said.
As Connie went upstairs to gather her things, Adeline busied herself in the kitchen, baking cookies and making small snacks.
She directed Harrison to help her out.
By the time the cookies were ready and placed in the oven, Connie was downstairs, ready to leave.
"Wait a bit longer," Adeline said. "I made some light snacks too. You can take them to the hospital for my brother. He should be able to eat a little now."
"Alright."
Though Connie was eager to go to the hospital, she didn't mind taking a little extra time. She also wanted to prepare something with her own hands for Alberto.
While the cookies baked, she made some
oatmeal and light dishes, packed them into a food box, and when Adeline's snacks were ready, she left.
Though Harrison and Adeline didn't go with her, they had ensured Connie would be well-protected, so their subordinates made sure to follow her closely.
Just as they were getting ready, Sam walked downstairs, yawning.
"What's that smell? It smells amazing."
As soon as Sam said this, his eyes landed on the cookies and snacks on the dining table, fresh and - steaming.
He reached out to grab one, but Harrison swiftly slapped his hand away.
"Harrison, what are you doing?" Sam whined.
"We grew up together, and now you're not even sharing your snacks with me?"
"No." Harrison was unmoved.
Sam pouted. "I know. Miss Hensley made these, didn't she? Come on, just let me try one."
"No."
No matter how Sam tried to reason, Harrison refused to give in.
Finally, Adeline shot Harrison a playful glare.
"Why are you being so possessive?"
Harrison merely huffed.
"You can have one," Adeline said, taking the plate with the cookies and sliding it towards Sam.
Sam grabbed a cookie and took a bite, savoring the flavor as he chewed. "Wow, Miss Hensley, these are really good."
He was about to reach for another, but Adeline quickly pulled the plate away.
"One's enough. No more," she said with a grin.
Sam sighed, looking at Harrison, who seemed to be smugly patting Adeline's head. He couldn't help but think, "These two are so sneaky together. What a pair."
Meanwhile, Killer's subordinates stood nervously in front of him, not daring to make a sound.
A brunette beauty knelt beside him, pouring wine into a glass filled with ice, retreating quietly, afraid the storm would turn on her next.
Catherine had already taken a knife for Killer, yet Killer didn't spare a flicker of pity for her. And she? Just the girl who normally only brought tea and cleared plates-what hope did she ever have?
Killer's eyes rested on the glass of wine, staring at the ice cubes for a while before he finally spoke. "So, you're telling me that the people sent to monitor the Mendoza family were caught, and three more were captured today, is that right?"
His subordinates exchanged uneasy glances.
The biggest and the bravest man stepped forward, his voice shaky. "We're sorry, boss, but with Harrison and Memphis backing the Mendoza family, we just didn't have the strength to fight back."
Killer smiled, his voice low and mocking. "So, I've gotten so soft that you feel bold enough to make excuses in front of me?"
His subordinates felt their legs weaken.
The man who had spoken began to sweat profusely.
"We didn't mean it like that," the man stammered.
"Well, what did you mean, then?" Killer's voice turned cold.
The man shut his mouth immediately.
He had wanted to suggest they let this one slide, that maybe they should abandon the plan to go after Adeline.
But seeing Killer's demeanor, he knew that speaking up now would likely cost him his life, so he just kept his mouth shut.
Killer grabbed the glass of wine in front of him, swirling it but not drinking.
He motioned for the man to come closer.
The man hesitated but didn't dare disobey, rushing to stand in front of Killer and bowing low.
Without a word, Killer poured the wine over his head.
The ice cubes crashed against the man's skull, cold and sharp.
The man stood trembling, unsure whether it was fear or the cold that made him shake.
But he didn't dare move, knowing that even a single flinch would seal his fate.
"Tell me, what good is it having you useless people around?" Killer spat, slapping the man's face lightly.
It wasn't hard, but the impact made the man's vision blur.
The door suddenly opened, and Catherine was helped inside.
She saw the scene and bit her lip, knowing what was happening.
Her voice was hoarse as she spoke, "Boss."
Killer didn't acknowledge her. He didn't even glance her way.
Catherine pressed on, her voice laced with concern, "Give it up, don't keep pushing forward blindly."
It wasn't fear of Killer's wrath that drove her to say this. She was genuinely concerned.
She feared that Killer's obsession with Adeline could ruin everything.
They needed to leave, lay low, and avoid drawing attention.
Continuing to target Adeline would only lead them into deeper trouble.
"They've already caught so many of our people and have learned a lot about the organization," Catherine continued, gritting her teeth against the pain from her wound. Her voice weak, she said, "If we don't leave soon, we might be wiped out. Is that what you want?"
