Chapter 563: Out of Danger
The three of them, who had been smiling just moments ago, suddenly froze in place,
In the stillness of the restaurant, the sudden ringing of Adeline's phone felt unnervingly urgent.
She hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to pick up.
The call was most likely from Alberto.
He was the one who would update her on Isaac's condition.
She naturally hoped for good news, but the fear of bad news loomed over her like a heavy cloud.
But avoiding the call wasn't an option.
She had to know what was happening with Isaac.
Taking a deep breath, she picked up the phone.
Joyce and Connie quickly moved closer to her, standing by her side in silent support.
Their presence, though simple, gave her a small sense of strength.
Adeline picked up the phone, and indeed, it was from Alberto.
"Hello?" Adeline said, her voice a little shaky as she answered.
Alberto's voice sounded hoarse, likely from exhaustion.
"Adeline," he said softly, "Don't worry. Dad is fine. The doctor just said he's out of danger."
The relief that washed over Adeline was immediate, like a weight lifted from her chest.
A wave of joy surged through her, and she instinctively got up, pacing back and forth, her voice a little frantic. "That's great news... Really? Dad's really fine?"
"Yes, he's fine. Don't worry," Alberto reassured her. "But he still needs to stay in the hospital for a while. He hasn't woken up yet, but once he does, I'll call you so you can talk to him."
"Okay," Adeline murmured, feeling the weight of her emotions.
Her vision blurred, a layer of mist forming in her eyes as the overwhelming relief set in.
She couldn't help but smile, even as the tears fell.
Joyce and Connie, seeing Adeline's reaction, also felt a sense of relief. They exhaled deeply, their faces softening with relief.
"How's Mom?" Adeline asked quickly, her concern turning to Gracie.
"She's fine. Just a little shaken up, she fainted for a moment, but the doctor said it was due to stress. She's awake now and doing well," Alberto answered. "She wanted to stay at the hospital with Dad, but I convinced her to go home and rest. We've already sent her back."
"Is she alone?" Adeline asked anxiously.
"Don't worry. Memphis is personally escorting her. There's no chance of anything going wrong," Alberto reassured her.
At the mention of Memphis, Adeline finally relaxed.
If he were with Gracie, she knew she was safe.
"I need you to take good care of Dad," Adeline said, her voice still filled with concern.
"I will," Alberto replied.
Adeline's mind began to wander again as she heard the faint hint of weariness in Alberto's voice.
"I should have asked about you earlier. How are you doing?" Adeline said, suddenly feeling a twinge of guilt.
It was Alberto who called her last night, and all he said was that Isaac was in trouble. He never mentioned himself at all.
So, her mind was completely consumed with thoughts of Isaac and Gracie, who had just been rescued.
She completely forgot that Alberto was also involved in this dangerous situation, and she had no idea what had happened to him.
Alberto laughed, "I'm young and strong. What could possibly happen to me? Don't worry."
"Really? Don't lie to me," Adeline said, a hint of concern in her voice.
Alberto laughed softly. "Why would I lie to you? You can hear me, can't you? I'm perfectly fine."
Even though his words sounded reassuring, Adeline couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
She wanted to ask more, but she couldn't be with him right now.
"I'm really fine," Alberto insisted.
There was a slight rustle on the other end of the line, and then Alberto spoke again, "Listen, I've got to go. Something's come up, but I'll talk to you soon."
With that, he quickly hung up the phone.
Standing before Alberto now was the doctor.
The doctor looked at the thick bandages wrapping Alberto's arms and legs and proceeded to explain all the precautions he needed to take.
In truth, Alberto had been injured badly last night.
But unlike Isaac, he hadn't slipped into unconsciousness.
He didn't want Adeline and Connie to worry.
So, when speaking with them, he gritted his teeth, forcing himself to stay composed, hiding any signs of distress.
Though he had told Adeline before that she should confide in Harrison about their troubles, Alberto, being a man, felt this was something he should handle on his own.
There was no need to drag them into it and make them worry as well.
After the doctor finished explaining, he left the room.
Isaac had reliable men taking care of him.
Alberto lay back in bed, closing his eyes to rest.
At least the chaos at their place seemed to have calmed down for now.
Now, it was all about what would happen with Harrison.
When Gracie got home, she immediately broke down in tears with Adeline, Joyce, and Connie.
Memphis, who had brought her back, stood
silently by, watching with a blank expression.
After a while, they remembered there was still someone else in the room.
Adeline, feeling a bit embarrassed, wiped away her tears and said to Memphis, "Thank you so much for your help."
"It's alright, Miss Hensley," Memphis replied. "If you must thank someone, it should be Mr.
Thomson."
Adeline smiled faintly. She had wanted to ask about Memphis and Harrison and wondered why Memphis followed Harrison's orders so obediently.
But she wasn't particularly close to Memphis, so she didn't press the matter.
"Mr. Thomson instructed me to stay here and protect you until the situation is fully resolved," Memphis added.
Adeline nodded. "Thank you for your hard work. I'll have someone arrange accommodation for you."
With the Mendoza family's vast estate, there was always room for Memphis and his men.
Memphis didn't decline.
He and his men needed rest so they could continue protecting Adeline and the others.
After all, it was rare for him to work for Harrison, and he didn't want to mess up.
Adeline arranged for their accommodations and then helped Gracie back to her room to rest, talking to her for a long while.
Gracie had seen Killer.
She described his appearance to Adeline in detail.
"He really looks younger than I imagined,"
Gracie exclaimed. "I swear, he might even be younger than you. Or maybe it's just that he looks young-oh, and he's really handsome too."
Adeline gave her a look.
Even now, in such a situation, she was still concerned with whether that man was handsome.
Adeline could barely contain her fury. She wanted nothing more than to strangle that man.
"Oh, don't overthink it. I'm just stating the facts," Gracie said, stifling a yawn.
"Get some rest," Adeline said with a soft voice.
"You must be exhausted after everything that's happened."
"Oh, it's alright," Gracie replied with an indifferent expression. "I've been through a lot worse."
"You're just putting on a tough front," Adeline teased.
She tucked Gracie in.
Gracie, truly worn out, lay down with eyes barely staying open. But she still reached out, grabbing Adeline's hand. "From now on, we...
We'll be alright, won't we?"
