Chapter 546: Harrison Is Under Investigation
However, most of the surveillance footage
in the area had already been destroyed.
There were only a few cameras at a slightly further intersection.
When Adeline checked the footage from the intersection, she found the black van the bodyguards had mentioned.
The footage was high-definition, and the license plate was clearly visible.
But Adeline knew well that if the organization had managed to evade the police for so many years, they would never be careless enough to expose their real license plate so easily.
Still, just to be sure, she had it checked.
As expected, the plate was fake.
The black van was a common model, and trying to trace it through the vehicle itself was nearly impossible.
Isaac and Alberto still hadn't returned home.
They were probably out trying to find Gracie.
Connie had originally planned to go with Alberto.
But Alberto told her that Adeline might be in a fragile emotional state. Although Joyce was with her, he was still worried, so he asked Connie to hurry back and stay with Adeline.
When Connie arrived, she found Adeline surprisingly calm, which put her at ease.
"Don't overthink it," she said. "This isn't your fault. If anyone's to blame, it's the people behind all of this. And I believe we'll get Gracie back safely."
Adeline nodded slightly.
She wasn't foolish enough to take all the blame onto herself, though she did feel guilty.
After all, they kidnapped Gracie to draw her out, as Gracie was her mother.
But right now, the most important thing was to rescue Gracie.
So Adeline didn't have time to wallow in guilt.
At that moment, Joyce, who had been scrolling through her phone, suddenly froze.
She glanced cautiously at Adeline.
Seeing that Adeline was still absorbed in the surveillance footage, Joyce quietly gestured to Connie.
Connie understood and said to Adeline, "Let's make you some coffee. Get your mind off things."
"Thanks."
As they stepped outside the room, Connie immediately asked, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
"Big trouble," Joyce replied, handing her the phone.
Connie stared at the screen, and her face went pale.
The news was from Orianto. The headline read, "The Thomson Group Linked to Illegal Activities, CEO Harrison Thomson Taken by Prosecutors for Investigation."
Connie froze when she saw the headline.
"This just popped up in my feed," Joyce said, her face drained of color. "I didn't want to tell Adeline."
"Oh my God. If Adeline finds out, what will we do?" Connie panicked. "She can't handle more right now."
Gracie had just been kidnapped.
And now Harrison was being investigated.
Connie thought to herself that if it were her, she might just break down.
Adeline was much more composed and rational, but this had to be hurting her deeply...
The thought alone made Connie's heart ache for her.
"How could the Thomson Group be involved in illegal activities?" Joyce paced nervously.
"This doesn't make sense. Adeline's worked there for five years. If the Thomson Group was really shady, she would have left long ago. And I may not know Mr. Thomson well, but he's not the type of person to be involved in this."
Joyce didn't know Harrison well, but she knew Sam.
Sam and Harrison had grown up together.
Whenever Joyce heard Sam talk about Harrison, it was either in a teasing way or a complimentary one.
She trusted Sam.
And naturally, that made her trust Harrison's character.
"Maybe he's being framed," Connie said seriously. "Some people are just too crafty."
Her words hit Joyce like a lightbulb.
Sam had asked her to come to Yewhaina with him precisely because he was worried about something happening to her.
And now, this situation was tied to Harrison.
She didn't know all the details.
But maybe this was something Harrison had been expecting.
With that thought, Joyce felt a little calmer.
After all, Harrison was her best friend's boyfriend and also Sam's childhood friend.
She certainly didn't want anything to happen to him.
"I'm going to call Sam and ask him about this," Joyce said, dialing Sam's number.
After a long wait, Sam didn't pick up.
Joyce's anxiety grew.
"What if something's happened to Sam?" Joyce muttered.
"Don't worry. He's probably just busy," Connie reassured her. "Maybe he hasn't heard the phone. Just give it a little more time and see if he calls back."
Joyce hesitated, then hung up.
"I'll wait for him to call back."
She had considered calling again.
But if Sam was occupied, calling him over and over would just make things worse.
She hadn't thought of that at first.
Now that she had, she decided to hold off for a while.
"Let's go. Let's make some coffee," Connie said, holding her hand. "I think none of us will sleep tonight."
The news of Harrison's investigation sent shockwaves through Orianto.
The Thomson Group was a well-known enterprise, and Harrison, with his youth and good looks, had always attracted attention.
Now that the Thomson Group was in trouble and Harrison was under investigation, it naturally became a topic of heated discussion.
"What? A man I follow who's not even in entertainment is falling from grace?"
"How ridiculous. Why him of all people?"
"Honestly, Mr. Thomson is handsome and has an incredible presence. I can't think of anyone in the entertainment industry who's better looking."
"I've been following him for years. He's not only good-looking but manages a huge company so well at such a young age."
"So what if he's good-looking? Now he's a criminal. You guys only care about his looks, don't you?"
"Seriously, how can you like someone like him? He's probably guilty of something illegal!"
"You're all just after his money. Stop pretending like he's some saint."
"You're acting like he's already been convicted. Did you miss the part where it said 'possibly involved in illegal activities'? He hasn't even been sentenced yet."
"You're so naïve. They wouldn't take a CEO from such a major company unless they had solid evidence. It's the Thomson Group... I'm sure this is the real deal."
" I always thought Harrison was no good."
