One night stand with my president(chapter 608)

Chapter 608: She Only Wanted to Save Her Father

But she had no other choice.

Her father was seriously ill, her two younger sisters were still very young, and her entire family were undocumented immigrants in Yewhaina.

She had tried to find work, but because of their undocumented status, no place was willing to hire her. On the rare occasion a place was willing to give her work, they would deliberately withhold her wages, and she had absolutely nowhere to turn for help.

Dare to report it? She, the undocumented person, would be the first one arrested.

There had been a few "kind-hearted people"

who said they were willing to help her, but in the end, she discovered they were all just trying to trick her, with ulterior motives.

So, she could only resort to those methods to scrape together money.

She only went to the floors where the wealthy patients stayed. People like that, momentarily soft-hearted, casually giving her a little money - for her, it was a considerable "income."

She used this money to support her two sisters, to buy medicine for her father, to extend his life just a little bit more, and a little more.

Actually, half of what she had said outside Russell Hunter's (Mr. Hunter's) hospital room door before was a lie.

She said her family member was about to be kicked out of the hospital.

In reality, her father couldn't even stay in a hospital.

They were undocumented.

And without health insurance, staying in a hospital in Yewhaina was extremely expensive.

She could only let her father recuperate at home, buying medicine for him.

But the medicine her father needed was expensive and scarce. Even when she occasionally managed to get a large sum from a wealthy person, it wouldn't last long.

She knew that the people at the hospital who knew of her looked down on and despised her.

But she didn't care.

She only wanted to save her father's life.

And this time, the reason she had let Russell see her home was because she could tell he truly meant her no harm, and he was wealthy and influential. She thought, if Russell came to her home and saw their pitiful state, wouldn't he be even more soft-hearted and give her more money?

Lily Sparrow was well aware that what she was doing wasn't right, but to let her father live a little longer, to let her two sisters have a few more full meals, even if it meant being a person with despicable methods, she didn't mind.

Russell was silent for a moment, then asked,

"Why did you come to Yewhaina?"

"My parents were tricked back then," Lily said with a bitter smile. "They told my parents they were bringing them to Yewhaina for legitimate work, to earn a lot of money. I was only twelve then. They were afraid I'd have no one to look after me back in Orianto, so they brought me along. The first couple of years were actually okay. At least my dad wasn't sick, and we didn't worry about food and drink. But later, the boss at the place where my parents worked got into trouble and ran away. The person who introduced them the job also ran off, taking all my parents' wages with them! By then, my dad had already been diagnosed with his illness, right when we needed money the most. My mother couldn't bear the blow..."

Here, Lily's voice choked up.

Russell roughly understood what happened next.

He didn't let Lily continue, changing the subject instead. "What about your two sisters then?"

"They're the children of friends who worked with my dad," Lily explained, composing herself. "After the incident happened back then, their parents suddenly vanished and could no longer be contacted. I suspect they were probably tricked into going somewhere else for hard labor... They were less than five years old at the time, tiny. I felt so sorry for them, so I took them in."

Russell's gaze softened a little.

Lily herself was living such a hard life, yet she was willing to care for two sisters who weren't even related to her by blood.

Her heart was kind, wasn't it?

The sharpness and toughness she projected now were all to protect herself and her family, to survive...
