Chapter 604: I Won't Wrong Her

"Qingli," Alberto Mendoza said, looking at his phone's lock screen photo of Connie Miller, "Will she come back?"

They had been so close to getting married.

How had things come to this?

He truly regretted it-he shouldn't have drunk so much that night, shouldn't have had that drunken mistake with another woman.

He had ruined his relationship with Connie.

Adeline Hensley didn't know how to answer his question.

Who could possibly know for sure?

Alberto hadn't really expected an answer from her. He was just in too much pain and desperately needed to talk to someone.

But soon, he forced himself to pull himself together.

After taking a few sips of water, he asked, "Is Mom still with Pharrell and Dad?"

"Yes," Adeline Hensley replied with a slight smile.

"Since learning about Pharrell, Dad's spirits have visibly improved. He's already eager to go pick out gifts for him. He initially thought about sending someone else to buy them but then felt he must wait until he's discharged to choose them personally."

Alberto also managed a faint smile. "If Dad's in better spirits, his injuries will heal faster too."

Then he added, "Monica came to see me earlier.

She said that if Pharrell needs to stay at the Mendoza residence before he recovers, she hopes we'll let her come too. She can't bear to be parted from him.

The smile faded from Adeline's face.

"Her request is actually quite reasonable. I can't really refuse her," Alberto Mendoza said.

But the thought of Connie Miller made his heart ache.

Before Connie left, he had worried that allowing Monica into the Mendoza home would drive Connie away.

Now that Connie was gone, he worried that if they let Monica move in now, would

Connie feel that they had rushed to bring Monica in the moment she left?

"This is a difficult situation," Adeline said.

"Mom and Dad will likely agree. Before Pharrell recovers, if he doesn't need to be hospitalized, they'll definitely want to bring him back to the Mendoza residence to care for him. And he's still so young; he fundamentally needs his birth mother. Even if he could manage without her, Monica can't bear to be apart from him. We can't deprive a mother of the right to be with her child."

Otherwise, regardless of how others might view them, their own consciences wouldn't allow it.

Alberto Mendoza was silent for a long time before nodding.

"But doing this feels so wrong to Connie," Adeline said bitterly.

Even she felt guilty, let alone Alberto.

"I won't wrong her," Alberto Mendoza said, his voice hoarse.

Adeline's phone chimed twice.

She took it out and looked; it was a message from the Mendoza staff.

Connie Miller had just checked into a hotel.

She probably wanted to be alone with her thoughts, as she hadn't asked anyone to accompany her.

Adeline relayed this message to Alberto.

"Tell them to keep a close watch. Don't let her skip meals," Alberto said.

"Don't worry, l've already instructed them about that."

"Qingli... I'm glad you're back," Alberto Mendoza said.

If Adeline hadn't been found and brought back, he might not have had anyone he could properly confide in and discuss things with right now.

Although Isaac Mendoza and Gracie Mendoza were understanding parents who would respect his wishes, they were ultimately from a different generation, and there could be a gap in perspective.

Adeline was different.

So Alberto felt immensely grateful now to have such a wonderful sister.

He just wished they could have found Adeline Hensley sooner.

Then she  wouldn't have had to suffer so much.

"Brother, get some rest."

She didn't say anything more, patted Alberto Mendoza's shoulder, and left.

Alberto remained alone in the hospital room, silently looking at his phone's lock screen, then turned to gaze out the window.

There was no sunshine today. The sky was overcast with dark clouds, as if rain was imminent.

He hoped it wouldn't thunder. Connie was terrified of thunder. If he wasn't by her side, she would be scared.

Sure enough, before long, it began to rain..

It wasn't heavy, just a steady drizzle.

Harrison Thomson held an umbrella as he and Adeline Hensley walked to a restaurant near the hospital for a meal.

"I had someone look into Monica's past,"

Harrison Thomson said. "They found something quite interesting."
