Chapter 593: Baby, You Have a Chance to Survive
"No one blames you," Adeline Hensley said. "If this child truly is my brother's, then he should take responsibility as a father."
Whether it was a drunken mistake or something else, if Alberto Mendoza was involved, he couldn't run away from it.
It's just... it would be Connie Miller who would suffer...
Adeline felt a pang of discomfort herself.
If a woman suddenly appeared now with a child claiming it was Harrison Thomson's, she would definitely be devastated too.
Hearing Adeline's words, a smile appeared on Monica's face.
But then Adeline added, "Of course, that's on the condition that the child is really my brother's."
Monica's smile froze on her lips.
However, she quickly regained her composure and said, "When the paternity results come out, you'll all know I'm not lying."
Then, with hope in her eyes, she asked, "If the child really is Alberto's... can you find a way to get the best doctors to treat him?"
"Of course," Adeline said. "The Mendoza family will spare no effort."
Hearing this, Monica's face lit up with visible joy.
"Baby, you have a chance to survive now... that's wonderful..."
Someone knocked on the door of the hospital room.
Monica flinched instinctively, clutching the infant in her arms tighter and looking warily towards the door.
Adeline Hensley noted her reaction carefully, her own eyes darkening thoughtfully. She walked over and opened the door.
It was Harrison Thomson, holding a cup of milk tea.
Adeline didn't let him enter the room, instead stepping out into the corridor with him.
"I iust bought it."
It was from a milk tea brand from Orianto that happened to have a branch in Yewhaina. Harrison Thomson had bought
Adeline's favorite flavor.
After Adeline took a few sips, Harrison Thomson said, "I had someone look into it.
The department gathering this woman mentioned did happen, and your brother did attend that time. According to recollections from other colleagues in the department, that night, it was indeed this woman who helped your brother leave. However, it's been too long. That hotel cleared and deleted its surveillance footage a while ago; it can't be recovered."
So there was no way to confirm for sure if Monica had helped Alberto Mendoza to a hotel room.
But even if she had, it wouldn't prove they had done anything.
They definitely needed to investigate the sequence of events, but ultimately, the most crucial thing was still the paternity test result.
Adeline sighed softly.
She glanced towards Alberto Mendoza's hospital room door.
"I wonder how things are between Alberto and Connie now?"
If that child really was Alberto Mendoza's, and Connie Miller couldn't accept it... Would they really have to face breaking up again?
Inside the hospital room, Alberto Mendoza had been holding Connie Miller's hand tightly.
A long silence had stretched between them.
It was only when a tear from Connie fell onto the back of Alberto's hand that he seemed to jolt back to reality, quickly reaching up to wipe her tears.
"Connie... I'm sorry," Alberto said, full of guilt.
"I've made you sad."
Connie looked up, her eyes glistening with tears.
"If... if that child really is yours, what are you going to do?"
Alberto was silent for a moment before saying, "let's wait for the naternitv results first"
"Let's wait for the paternity results first."
But Connie insisted, "I want you to tell me now."
"Connie..." Alberto reached out and gently cupped her face. "I'm sorry. If that child really is mine... I can't just abandon him."
Connie stared at him intently. After a long while, she suddenly laughed, though her laughter held a note of helplessness and bitterness.
"Actually, I already knew you'd say that."
How could she not understand the man she loved? Alberto Mendoza wasn't the type to be irresponsible.
No matter the circumstances of the child's birth, if it was truly his biological son, Alberto would never just turn his back.
To be honest, if he were the kind of man who could ignore his own flesh and blood, Connie wouldn't love him in the first place.
But... what was she supposed to do?
They had already discussed it; once Alberto's injuries healed properly, they were going to start planning their wedding.
But now, suddenly, there was another woman, and a child.
If that child really was Alberto's blood, he would undoubtedly be recognized by the Mendoza family.
And what about the child's mother?
Could the Mendoza family just accept the child and discard the mother?
They weren't capable of such a thing, and Connie wasn't that cruel either.
So, this woman, Monica, would forever exist in Alberto Mendoza's life.
Even if Alberto didn't marry Monica, she would still be the mother of his child.
As long as this child existed, there would always be a connection between them.
Connie felt... she wasn't sure she could accept that.
Logically, she understood Alberto's position.
But emotionally, she couldn't convince herself to accept this reality.
Alberto seemed to sense something. He abruptly pulled Connie into a tight embrace.
"You can't leave me again," he said, his voice pained. "Please.."
Connie felt a tightness in her chest, though she didn't know if it was from Alberto's tight hold.
"I haven't decided yet," she said.
Her heart was currently a battlefield of struggle and pain.
There was no doubt she couldn't bear to lose Alberto.
But if that child really was his...
A storm of conflicting emotions warred violently. within her.
