Chapter 561: My Brother's Dead
Adeline's heart clenched painfully, and she nearly collapsed from the rush of emotions.
But Alberto quickly reassured her with some good news.
They had rescued Gracie.
She was unharmed, completely safe.
But now, with Isaac injured, she was caught in a storm of worry and shock.
That was the best news Adeline had received in a long while.
However, just as Gracie had been saved, Isaac was now in trouble.
"How's Dad?" Adeline asked urgently.
Alberto hesitated before responding, "Don't worry, wait for me to update you."
At his words. Adeline's heart dropped.
If Isaac's injuries weren't serious, Alberto would have told her directly.
But since he said it like that, that meant
Isaac's condition was likely grave.
Her lips trembled, unable to say anything, as Alberto added, "Adeline, I know you're worried about Dad, but stay at home. You're safe there with plenty of people protecting you. If you go out now, it might give the enemy a chance. We just got Mom out, but a lot of important members from that organization managed to escape. Even worse, we haven't even seen the boss yet."
To be honest, Alberto found himself admiring the boss of the organization.
The mercenaries that Harrison sent, led by Memphis, were truly formidable.
The organization's members were caught completely off guard and had been retreating rapidly.
But even in that situation, the boss quickly adapted and managed to escape with most of his people.
It showed just how capable he was.
Alberto knew that without Memphis and his
mercenaries, they wouldn't have been able to rescue Gracie, and they might have all been trapped on the mountain.
Though Adeline was anxious, she still kept her wits about her.
She understood what Alberto meant.
If she went out now, there was a real chance she'd be targeted by the organization again.
Gracie had just been rescued, and Isaac's condition was uncertain.
She couldn't afford to cause any more trouble.
"I understand, Alberto," Adeline forced out, her voice thick with emotion.
Alberto added, "Also, don't let Connie and Miss Monroe go out."
"I won't," Adeline replied.
The organization must have gathered enough intel on her to know about her relationships with Connie and Joyce.
No one around her could afford to be put in
harm's way.
"We're almost at the hospital. I'm hanging up now," Alberto said.
"If anything happens, tell me immediately,"
Adeline urged.
"I know," Alberto replied, and quickly ended the call.
Adeline's emotions were in turmoil. She felt both relief and sadness. Almost unable to bear the weight of everything, she collapsed onto the nearby couch.
"Adeline, what's happened?" Joyce asked anxiously, sitting beside her. "Is Gracie alright?"
Adeline repeated what Alberto had said.
Joyce, too, felt a mix of emotions.
It seemed that fate was playing a cruel
game.
They had finally rescued Gracie, only for Isaac to be injured right after.
"Adeline... don't worry. Everything will be alright," Joyce said, trying to comfort her.
Adeline nodded faintly, but her mind was elsewhere.
She wanted to talk to Harrison, but when she called the number he had used to reach her, no one picked up.
Staring down at her phone, Adeline felt her thoughts unravel, her emotions a tangled mess.
Harrison would be fine.
She knew he would be.
He had promised her, and she believed he would never break that promise.
Meanwhile, at a secluded villa, the atmosphere in the living room was thick with the scent of blood.
Several people dressed as doctors and nurses moved quickly to tend to the wounded.
Killer stood by the window, staring out into the black night.
His usual calm, confident demeanor was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating intensity.
Catherine approached with a bottle of water, offering it tentatively. "Boss, would you like some water?"
Killer ignored her.
Suddenly, a figure rushed forward and knocked the bottle from her hand.
"Why are you still drinking?"
It was Joel, his arm still bleeding from an earlier injury.
He had dismissed the doctor who tried to tend to him.
But more alarming than his injury were his bloodshot eyes. He was seething with rage.
Normally, Catherine would have argued with Joel, but seeing him like this, she kept quiet.
She didn't bend down to pick up the bottle.
Joel glared at Killer. "Krauss is dead. Do you
know that? Krauss is dead!"
Krauss had already been heavily injured, and tonight's chaotic situation had been too
much for him.
Even with Joel protecting him, he had not survived.
Joel hadn't even been able to bring his body out.
Now, he was losing control.
The worst part was that Killer knew about Krauss's death but showed no sign of grief.
Joel could see the truth: Killer was upset, not because of Krauss's death, but because of his own rare defeat.
But to Joel, it was heartbreaking.
Krauss had followed Killer for years, loyal and dedicated, yet when he died, Killer couldn't even take a moment to mourn.
Catherine hesitated to step forward, trying to pull Joel away, but he suddenly pushed her away.
He was strong, and Catherine almost fell to the floor.
"Did you hear me?" Joel shouted at Killer. "My brother is dead!"
Killer finally spared him a glance.
"So what?" he responded dismissively.
His tone was as indifferent as ever.
He didn't care about Krauss's death.
For someone like him, losing a subordinate was nothing new. He had lost many before.
Joel's eyes burned with fury, and he sneered, "I knew you were like this. I told Krauss not to be so loyal to you, but he wouldn't listen. If I'd known this would happen, I should have taken him and left or just killed you myself."
With that, Joel drew a knife from somewhere, lunging at Killer.
Killer didn't flinch. He didn't even move.
Catherine, panic rising, lunged to stop Joel.
"Don't!" she cried, throwing herself in front of Killer.
Joel's knife plunged into her abdomen.
In the next moment, two men seized Joel and wrestled him to the ground.
