Chapter 570: She Was Sad
The warmth of Harrison's hand lingered in
Adeline's palm, reaching all the way to her heart.
Though a sense of unease still lingered inside her, a little more courage blossomed within.
She slowly pushed open the door to Isaac's room.
She had just asked the nurse, and Isaac was still resting.
Adeline didn't want to make any noise, fearing it would disturb him.
Once inside, she took a few steps forward, and there he was, lying in bed.
His body was wrapped in thick bandages, and his head was also covered.
He was deep in sleep, his face extraordinarily pale.
Just one glance at him was enough to make her eyes well up.
She turned to Harrison, burying her face in his shoulder, tears flowing down uncontrollably.
Harrison gently patted her head, offering comfort.
However, Adeline quickly regained her composure.
She approached Isaac's bed.
The medical equipment beside him displayed reassuring data. Isaac had passed the critical phase, and his life was no longer in danger.
Adeline could understand it.
But even so, her heart still ached for Isaac, who had suffered so much.
And with that, her hatred for the so-called organization and for Killer, the mastermind behind it all, burned brighter.
If it weren't for them, her family would not have been put through so much pain.
Afraid of waking Isaac, she didn't speak.
After standing by his side for a moment, she left the room with Harrison.
Just as they closed the door behind them,
spotted Alberto, leaning on a cane, limping toward them.
Upon seeing Adeline, his face briefly showed a flash of panic.
"What... what are you doing here?" he asked nervously.
"Of course we came because we're worried about you," Adeline replied softly.
Her gaze fell on his bandaged arms and legs, her voice breaking as she asked, "Alberto, is this really nothing serious like you said?"
Alberto looked awkward. "I didn't want to worry you," he said, "But my injuries aren't that severe. It only looks bad. See, I'm still walking."
"No matter how minor, it's still an injury..." Adeline wanted to scold him, but held back.
Alberto didn't want them to worry, so he had kept quiet.
She swallowed her words.
She walked up to him, gently holding him up, her eyes red as she asked, "Does it hurt?"
Alberto smiled, ruffling her hair. "Look at you, I'm still young and strong. A little injury like this doesn't hurt at all."
"You're the one being silly," Adeline said, "No matter how young, you're still human. Injuries hurt, don't try to fool me."
Alberto looked at her, smiling affectionately.
But his face soon turned serious. "You just came out like this, are you alright? Nothing happened on the way here, right? Once we go back..."
"Don't worry," Harrison said. "I won't let anything happen to Adeline."
On the way here, he had received reports that a group had been tailing them.
Clearly, members of the organization were trying to find an opportunity to harm Adeline.
But Harrison's men had a tight defense, and the group hadn't dared to act.
Alberto, hearing this, nodded, his worry easing.
As a man, he admired Harrison.
Though sometimes he felt a bit envious, he couldn't deny Harrison's strength.
Even if he was reluctant, he had to accept it.
And more importantly, he was happy for Adeline.
With such a man by her side, loving her fully, she would be happy in the future.
Of course, if Harrison ever dared to hurt Adeline, Alberto would stop at nothing to make him pay.
"Alberto, you've still got injuries. Don't stand here too long. Let me help you back to your room," Adeline said.
She and Harrison helped Alberto back to the room.
Alberto had been resting when he heard that Adeline had arrived.
Startled, he had gotten up and limped out to meet her.
Now that the tension was gone, his leg throbbed with pain.
Once back in the room, Harrison helped
him settle into bed, propping him half-up.
Alberto grimaced as he felt the pain in his leg.
"It hurts, doesn't it?" Adeline asked softly; her heart aching.
Alberto immediately smoothed his brow and smiled. "No, I was just kidding. It doesn't hurt."
"You're unbelievable, trying to fool me like a child," Adeline teased, scolding him lightly.
Alberto, not wanting her to worry, quickly changed the subject. "How's Mom since she got home?"
"She's fine," Adeline replied, "But she keeps asking about you and Dad."
"And Connie?" Alberto asked, suddenly looking worried. "She doesn't know about my injuries, does she?"
"Don't worry," Adeline reassured him, "She still doesn't know."
She gave a half-smile, adding, "But you're the one who told me not to hide things from Harrison. Now vou're hiding this from Connie?"
Alberto paused, unsure how to answer. "It's different, I'm a man..."
"What's the difference?" Adeline said.
"Whether you're a man or a woman, you still care about the one you love, don't you?"
Alberto was momentarily speechless.
"Think about the advice you gave me before,"
Adeline said. "I understand why you want to protect her by keeping it a secret, but if she finds out later...?"
Alberto imagined Connie's reaction, and he couldn't help but shiver.
He could already see her anger.
And if Connie were injured and kept it from him, he would be furious, but more than that, he would feel guilty.
He had been trying to spare Connie from worry, but now, if she knew... how much worse would her pain and guilt be compared to the worry she felt now?
He might be able to hide it for a while, but with them always being together, it would eventually come out.
And he couldn't guarantee that no one else would slip up.
Harrison spoke up then. "If you want to tell her about your injuries, and if she wants to come to the hospital to see you, I'll make sure she's safe. No need to worry, I'll handle it."
Alberto hesitated for a moment before nodding.
"I understand. Thanks. Let me think about it. If Connie wants to come to the hospital, I'll need your help."
Harrison smiled. "We're family. No need to be so formal."
