Chapter 555: We Don't Owe You Anything
Even the bodyguards were speechless as they listened to Camilla's words.
They hadn't really done anything to her-just frightened her a little, and she'd broken down, willing to spill everything she knew to Adeline.
Adeline remained glued to the surveillance footage, her eyes never leaving the screen as she calmly said, "Bring her in."
When Camilla was brought back into the room, she looked almost the same as before, except now her body trembled more, her eyes were red, and her face was streaked with tears.
"I thought you were tougher than this," Adeline said flatly. "Turns out you couldn't hold on for long."
Camilla sniffled, her voice pleading. "Please let me go. I won't do anything like this again."
Before, she had been resolute-determined to get her revenge, willing to do anything to make the Mendoza family suffer.
She thought she was strong, that she wasn't afraid of death.
But when the bodyguards had frightened her earlier, fear had gripped her.
She feared she might actually die here today, though it seemed like she didn't have much time left to live...
When she was faced with the threat of death, her instincts made her recoil.
"What you need to do now," Adeline said coldly, "is tell me everything you know. Whether I let you go or not depends on my mood."
With no choice, Camilla reluctantly began, "I put a drug in your coffee. The drug causes intense suffering, but... I don't really know what exactly it does. I've heard... there's a chance that it will..."
She hesitated, her eyes darting to Adeline before quickly lowering her head.
"Go on," one of the bodyguards urged impatiently.
"It... It could make you go insane," she said, her voice trembling.
Adeline laughed softly twice.
Camilla froze, her body stiffening in fear.
Adeline's voice turned sharp again.
"Camilla, I'm truly curious. What did I ever do to you? We've barely even met, yet you've gone to all this trouble to sneak into my life and use such a cruel method against me.
What's in it for you if I suffer, or if I go mad? What do you gain from it?"
Camilla fell silent, unsure how to respond.
Adeline continued, her voice unwavering.
"You know, the Mendoza family's rightful heir should have been my parents. But your family not only used underhanded tactics to seize the power, you made my family suffer, even making sure my parents and brother lived in torment. Even I, a baby in swaddling clothes, had to hide from your × family's menacing pursuit. If my aunt hadn't sacrificed everything to protect me, and if my mother hadn't taken me in, I wouldn't be here today."
Camilla still didn't speak.
Adeline seemed to have no expectation of a response and continued, "When my parents finally took back what was rightfully theirs, they could have killed your family, but they didn't.They spared you. They left you alive. Of course, killing a child is never easy, and that's where my parents differ from yours."
Camilla's face flushed with shame.
Though Adeline spoke of their parents, Camilla still felt like she had been slapped across the face. She couldn't bear the humiliation.
"They never expected you to thank them. They only wanted you out of our lives. But you've been a thorn in our side, causing trouble again and again. Do you really think this is the right thing to do?" Adeline asked, her tone flat, but the words cut deep.
Unable to hold it back, Camilla finally spoke, "! just need money to treat my illness... The Mendoza family is so rich, what harm is there in helping me?"
Adeline's eyes narrowed. "You're sick, and you want to live. I understand that. But we don't owe you anything. Just because you need help doesn't mean we're obligated to give it. If it were anyone else, it might be different, but do you really think you deserve help from us? Do you even understand who you are? You're the daughter of our enemies. Don't you realize that? If it weren't for your parents, my aunt wouldn't have died."
The Mendoza family had done a lot of charity work over the years.
There had been cases where employees' family members fell seriously ill and came to Isaac and Gracie for help. And they paid for all the treatment and aftercare, no strings attached.
Money wasn't a problem for them.
If they could help, they would.
But Camilla was the daughter of their enemies.
They didn't want to help.
Camilla's fate was none of their concern.
And on top of that, they had seen through her.
She wasn't a good person. Her intentions were anything but pure.
"It wasn't me. It was my parents," Camilla said, tears starting to fall.
Adeline smirked. "Oh, really? Should you go tell that to the baby who was hunted down in the cradle all those years ago?
And now, when the Mendoza family didn't help, Camilla had come to poison Adeline.
It was clear that she was no different from her parents.
She just didn't have the same methods.
Camilla opened her mouth but couldn't find the words to argue.
"Alright, now you can keep telling me everything else," Adeline said coldly.
Camilla looked away, her eyes darting nervously.
"What else is there?"
"This drug," Adeline said, "you couldn't have gotten it by yourself. And the way you've managed to disguise yourself so well-someone must be helping you."
She cut right to the point.
Camilla was left with no choice but to confess.
"Pedro gave me the drug," Camilla said, her voice defeated. "The person who helped me change my appearance... was someone Mr. and Mrs. Livingston hired. I told them I could work with them, that if they helped me get into the Mendoza family, I could get information on Pedro for them."
Adeline sneered. "Mr. and Mrs. Livingston really care about their son, don't they? How could they believe someone like you?"
Even if Camilla had joined the Mendoza family to gather information on Pedro, why would the Mendozas bring up Pedro in this house?
Besides, Camilla wouldn't want to help the Livingstons without anything to gain.
"I've told you everything I know. Can you let me go now?" Camilla asked quickly.
"When did I say I'd let you go?" Adeline's words were chilling.
Camilla froze in fear.
Adeline had never once said she'd let her
go.
