Chapter 542: Let's Get Married
But Camilla entered the Mendoza family for herself.
She endured such agony, bearing the pain as she let Fletcher and Litzy's people ruin her voice, not just to help them, but for something much deeper.
Fletcher and Litzy were desperate and had really believed she would help them gather information about Pedro in the Mendoza family.
Camilla thought hatefully, "That detestable man, that heartless scoundrel. I can't wait for him to die."
Joyce, growing tired of watching, pulled Adeline away.
Before turning away, Adeline's eyes inadvertently skimmed across Camilla.
Camilla, feeling guilty, quickly lowered her head.
She had already gone through such great lengths to change her appearance, even damaging her voice.
Surely, Adeline wouldn't recognize her.
Fortunately, Adeline didn't seem to notice her and turned to leave.
Camilla breathed a sigh of relief.
Back in her room, Adeline thought carefully and decided to tell Harrison about the man who had planted the tracker on her, and about the organization behind it.
Upon hearing this, Harrison immediately responded, "I'm heading to Yewhaina right now."
"Don't," Adeline quickly said. "I'm safe at home, and nothing will happen. Ever since the kidnapping incident, my family has been extra vigilant. They will not let anything happen to me."
"I'm still not at ease," Harrison said in a low voice. "I need to be by your side."
Even though his own situation wasn't completely resolved and was nearing a critical point, he couldn't ignore Adeline's safety.
"I'm telling you this not to make you drop everything and come to me," Adeline said. "If I couldn't solve this and if you weren't busy, I'd be the first one to ask you to come. But right now, I'm fine, and I don't want you to abandon your important work because of me."
Harrison didn't respond; his breathing was a little heavier.
"Because we are so important to each other, I want to tell you this so you won't regret it later. And I promise, if something happens that I can't deal with, I will tell you immediately, just like you promised me."
After a while, Harrison asked, "If I come over secretly, would you be mad?"
"I would," Adeline said firmly. "So you can't come secretly. And honestly, I think I know who's behind this, and it might be related to your situation."
Harrison's voice grew colder.
"I think I know who it is."
"So, if you don't handle your situation, mine will remain in a standstill," Adeline said with a smile.
"Why not focus and take care of that problem, then I can come back to you without worrying?"
"I understand," Harrison said.
He paused before adding, "Adeline...”
"Yes?"
"Never mind," Harrison said.
He had wanted to apologize to Adeline.
If it weren't for him, Adeline wouldn't have been in this situation.
After all, those people might have targeted her because they knew how important she was to him, using her to threaten him.
But if he said "sorry" to Adeline, she'd probably get upset.
They were so close now.
It wouldn't feel right to say those words.
Although he didn't say it, Adeline still guessed what he wanted to say and huffed.
"I see, you treat me like an outsider now."
"I didn't," Harrison immediately said.
Then, softly, he added, "Adeline, when you get back, let's get married."
At his words, Adeline's heart started pounding.
Her breath became a little more hurried, and for a moment, she didn't know what to say. Maybe she was just too excited.
After a while, she found her voice.
"Are you proposing to me?" she asked.
Harrison chuckled, "Well, not really."
It couldn't be so casual.
There should be a grand proposal ceremony.
He didn't want to make her feel even a little slighted.
"Then." Adeline almost agreed.
But after thinking for a moment, she said, "Let's talk after you propose."
Though she said that, her tone was full of teasing.
Harrison asked, "Will you say no?"
"Well, who knows. If you don't perform well, l might really say no."
"Please don't," Harrison said helplessly. "If you don't say yes, I'll be really sad."
"Then you'd better perform well and put me first," Adeline said, taking the opportunity.
"Okay," Harrison said softly, "I'll put you first."
After their conversation, neither of them wanted to hang up the phone.
Even though they said nothing more, just hearing each other's breathing was enough to make them feel secure.
It wasn't until Adeline heard someone calling
Harrison on his side that she ended the call.
Then, she lay on the soft bed, the words Harrison had just said echoing in her mind.
"When you get back, let's get married."
Her face suddenly turned flushed.
Adeline had always felt she wasn't ready for marriage just yet.
But when Harrison said those words, her heart actually raced.
In the past, Harrison had said similar things, but she had never felt this fast heartbeat before.
Maybe she was really ready to marry Harrison.
After all, he was the one she wanted to spend her life with.
In a room of an estate, Krauss and Joel stood before their boss. Krauss wore a serious expression, while Joel seemed entirely indifferent.
"Boss, sorry," Krauss said. "I didn't keep an eye on Joel."
The man sitting on the sofa lit a cigar and took a slow drag, not responding immediately.
Joel, feeling displeased, said, "Even though my last plan failed, we still have a chance.
At worst, I'll just barge into the Mendoza family and kidnap that woman...
"Shut up," Krauss snapped. "It's not as easy as you think."
At this moment, the man on the sofa chuckled.
"Joel, I believe you have the strength to do it," he said. "But have you considered the consequences of doing it?"
"What consequences?" Joel asked, seemingly nonchalant.
