Chapter 481: Something's Not Right

Normally, the bodyguards wouldn't show themselves in public.

But when entering a confined space, for her safety, they had to accompany Adeline. It was a strict order from Harrison.

Adeline understood the need for extra caution, especially since Benjamin was still on the run.

And since he chose to come here, it meant he was up to something suspicious.

They couldn't afford to be careless.

Alvaro, polite as always, refrained from saying anything, but couldn't help casting a subtle glare at the two bodyguards. He thought that if only they weren't here, he could really have a proper conversation with Adeline.

Soon, they all left the elevator.

They arrived at the Gilmore family's door, where Alvaro pulled out a key to open it.

Inside was a simple, yet warm living room.

Alvaro led them in, saying, "Please take a seat. My dad's at work, so it's just me and my mom here."

"How's Elissa?" Adeline asked.

She was here to visit Elissa, not to chat.

"She's in her room," Alvaro replied. "I'll take you to her."

As they headed to Elissa's room, Adeline realized she couldn't bring the two bodyguards inside.

"You two wait here in the living room," she said to the guards. "If anything happens, I'll scream."

The bodyguards, always on alert, nodded.

"Understood."

Alvaro led Adeline to Elissa's room, then knocked on the door.

"Mom, Adeline's here."

A woman's voice called out from inside, "Come in."

Adeline opened the door.

The room was dim, and on the bed lay a middle-aged woman.

It was Elissa, just as Adeline remembered her.

Over the years, the fine lines at the corners of her eyes had deepened. Perhaps because of her illness, her face appeared pale.

"Adeline..." Elissa reached out her hand with emotion. "It's been years. You've grown into such a beautiful young woman."

Adeline walked to her side, taking her hand.

"Elissa."

"If your mother could see you now, she would be so happy..." Elissa's eyes welled with tears.

Adeline felt a lump in her throat.

"Elissa, what exactly is wrong with you? Tell me, I'll ask my boyfriend to help contact some specialists for you."

At these words, Elissa's gaze seemed to flicker for a moment.

But she quickly smiled and replied, "It's nothing serious. Don't bother with specialists. By the way, you've got a boyfriend now? Time really flies. You were just a little girl, and now you're about to start your own family."

Elissa spoke naturally, but Adeline, with her keen senses, immediately felt something was off.

She was clearly changing the subject.

It felt strange.

Why wouldn't Elissa just tell her what illness she had? If she invited her over, why wouldn't she share what was going on with her health?

But Adeline didn't show any sign of suspicion on her face.

She simply smiled and said, "My boyfriend has been busy, or else I would've brought him along to see you."

"There will be time for that later," Elissa patted her hand. "Since you're here, why don't you stay for a few days? I'll cook for you."

"You're already unwell, how can I let you do all the work?" Adeline smiled. "I live not far from Aurgville, so I can come anytime.

Actually, I have some things to take care of, so I'll head back tomorrow."

As soon as Elissa heard this, she became anxious.

“How can you leave tomorrow?”
