Chapter 518: Making It Up to You
A faint, bitter smile crept across Harrison's lips.
If things were really as Myra guessed, then the day Lorenzo confronted Edward, Edward would've spilled the truth.
After all, he already knew Lorenzo was testing him at that point.
If he'd told the truth, maybe Lorenzo's heart would've softened and let him stay in the Thomson family.
Edward would never pass up even the slightest chance.
But he didn't say a word.
That, in itself, said everything.
Myra was starting to realize it too.
Her voice trembled as she spoke again. "If the worst has really happened... God, that's just..."
If that was true, Edward had stooped to a new low, once again.
But Harrison's feelings were even more complicated than hers.
There were things he already knew-things Myra hadn't found out yet.
"Get some rest, Harrison," Myra said gently.
"I'm going to try and sleep too."
She probably needed some time to process all of this.
"Alright. Good night."
"Good night."
After hanging up, Harrison showered and carefully changed Adeline into her pajamas.
Looking at her peaceful, sleeping face, he finally felt some sense of calm. He wrapped his arms around her, letting himself drift off beside her.
The next morning, Adeline woke up with a pounding headache, probably from all the drinks last night.
Harrison was already up, scrolling through his phone by her side.
Groaning, Adeline burrowed into Harrison's arms.
Harrison leaned down and kissed her, then handed her his phone, giving her a look.
"What?" Adeline mumbled, her brain still foggy.
"You."
She glanced at his screen and her jaw almost dropped.
On Harrison's phone was a photo of her and Triston, talking alone at the restaurant last night.
Judging by the angle, it was clearly a candid shot.
Who would have so much free time to secretly snap pics of her?
"Seriously, are you jealous again?" Adeline shot him a look.
Harrison let out a soft laugh. "Jealous? Over some fresh-faced kid? Give me a little credit."
Still, he couldn't help noticing Triston's eyes when he looked at Adeline. They were practically sparkled.
That was definitely not how one looked at a regular coworker.
"Triston's a good kid," Adeline said. "He's down-to-earth and works hard. Don't judge him just because of some photo, Okay?"
Harrison pressed his lips together. "I wasn't jealous until you started defending him. Now I'm feeling a little jealous."
"Oh, stop." Adeline pinched his waist. "Did you not hear me call him a kid? What else do you need me to say?"
Harrison smiled and nuzzled her hair with his chin. "I'm just messing with you."
"So where have you got that picture, anyway?"
"A boss of a media company sent it to me."
It turned out that a reporter had been dining at the same place last night. He recognized Adeline and secretly snapped a picture.
But he didn't dare post it, so he sent it to his boss first.
The boss took one look, broke out in a cold sweat, and immediately told him not to share it anywhere. Then he sent the photo to Harrison as a heads-up.
He wasn't trying to cause trouble, just covering himself in case Harrison ever found out.
Even after warning the reporter, the boss was still worried.
So, he confessed to Harrison himself, hoping for leniency. Thankfully, Harrison let it slide.
"Ugh." Adeline sighed, half-laughing, half-exasperated. "This is all your fault."
Harrison arched an eyebrow. "How is it my fault?"
"If you weren't such a big deal, would some reporter be taking random pictures of me? I bet he only snapped it because I'm your secretary."
She wasn't wrong, either.
Harrison thought about it, then started unbuttoning her pajamas.
"Wait, what are you doing?"
"Well, since it's my fault, I have to make it up to you."
"I don't need you to make it up to me!"
"No way. I can't stand the thought of you being upset."
Adeline almost burst out laughing at his logic.
But after last night, when he'd been so well-behaved, there was no way he was letting her go this morning. Before she knew it, her pajamas were already tossed to the floor.
Today, Adeline decided not to go to work.
She was taking Alondra out for some fun.
Alondra was thrilled. Sure, playing video games with Sam yesterday was great, but nothing made her happier than hanging out with Adeline.
Seeing how happy the little girl was, Adeline's eyes stung with emotion.
The night before, she'd gotten word that there was no passenger named Britney on any recent flights to Yewhaina.
They'd even checked other international flights.
But they didn't find Britney.
Britney had never left Orianto.
If their suspicions were right, what would happen to Alondra?
She was still just a kid.
If she ever found out the truth, how heartbreaking would she be?
Alondra, sensing something off, tugged at Adeline's sleeve, her voice tentative. "Did I do something wrong?"
Snapping out of her thoughts, Adeline patted her head and smiled, "No, sweetie, you didn't do anything wrong. You just think too much sometimes. So, where do you want to go today?"
Seeing Adeline's smile, Alondra immediately brightened up.
"I want to go to the amusement park!"
"Then the amusement park it is!"
Adeline even called Joyce to see if she wanted to come.
Of course Joyce was in. She drove over herself to pick them up.
The car was the latest luxury model-a gift from Sam's father.
At first, Joyce was hesitant to accept something so expensive, especially since she and Sam weren't even married yet:
But Sam's dad had put the car in her name, and Sam told her, "Come on, we're getting married sooner or later. What's wrong with my dad buying a car for his future daughter-in-law? If you turn it down, my parents might think you don't actually want to marry me. That wouldn't look good, right?"
Joyce thought it over and decided he had a point.
It was a thoughtful gesture from his parents, and now that the car was officially hers, leaving it to collect dust would be more disrespectful than anything else.
So she simply drove it out and picked them up.
The three of them hit the amusement park.
Tickets were already purchased online by Adeline —just scan and go.
Alondra went straight for the bumper cars, while Adeline and Joyce stood by, watching and chatting.
"Honestly, yesterday morning I really thought you were pregnant. I was already excited to be a godmother... It turns out I got my hopes up for nothing!"
