Chapter 538: She Has Found Out
After being rejected, the young man wasn't upset at all, but nor did he seem ready to leave.
In fact, he sat down beside Adeline.
Adeline's expression immediately froze. She stood up, walking over to Joyce.
Joyce held her hand, standing up as well, saying, "She's already rejected you. It's inappropriate to keep this up."
The young man shrugged. "I really want to get to know her, with sincerity. Why are you both being so cold?"
Adeline's tone was icy as she replied, "But it doesn't mean I should accept it. Besides, saying you're sincere the first time we meet? Don't you think that's ridiculous?"
The young man froze, then forced a smile.
"Alright, you're right, but really, no offense. This round is on me."
He nodded and left, after a quick bow.
Soon, the server brought the cold drinks they had ordered. The two women took them and left without touching the drinks the man had left on the table.
They would never drink anything from a stranger.
Plus, that man's attitude made Adeline extremely uncomfortable.
"You truly are a man-magnet," Joyce sighed.
"Every time we go out, if there's no guy hitting on you, I feel like something's missing."
Adeline didn't know what to say. She could only laugh dryly, feeling a bit helpless.
After they left, the man exited through the back of the café and got into a black car that had been parked there.
Inside the car was another man who looked strikingly similar to him.
"Joel, looks like it didn't work out?" the man said.
Joel Baxter chuckled. "She's a hard catch."
He continued, "But honestly, it makes sense.
With her beauty, I'm sure she's been hit on by countless men. Such a clichéd pick-up
is clearly useless on her."
"Then why bother?" the other man replied.
"You don't get it," Joel grinned. "Although I didn't hook her, I managed to plant a little something on her."
"A tracker?"
"Yeah, a micro one. It's hard to detect," Joel said.
"I need to keep track of her position, you know. Just following her around would be a waste of time. And we could lose her."
"Are you sure she didn't notice?"
"I placed it next to the button of her pocket when I sat down beside her. Based on how she acted, I don't think she noticed."
"Good job."
"Not easy to get you to compliment me," Joel
Baxter smirked.
His elder brother, Krauss Baxter, ignored the comment and said solemnly, "Since you ve boasted so much in front of the boss, we must succeed this time. Otherwise, there are plenty of people in the organization waiting to replace us."
"What does it matter?" Joel shrugged. "If someone wants to replace us, we'll just take care of them."
Adeline and Joyce were getting hungry, so they found a random restaurant to grab a bite.
As they were finishing their meal, Adeline called • one of the bodyguards over.
When the bodyguard arrived, she quietly instructed him while pulling something from her pocket.
The bodyguard nodded, saying, "Understood."
Then he turned and left.
Joyce watched, puzzled.
"What did you just tell him? What's with the mystery?" Joyce asked.
Adeline smiled. "If I'm right, I just gave him a micro-tracker."
"What?" Joyce's expression changed. "Who put a tracker on you?"
Suddenly, Joyce seemed to remember something.
"Could it be the guy who hit on you at the café?" Joyce's face darkened.
"That's him," Adeline confirmed.
Adeline had noticed the man when he had secretly tried to put something on her.
But she hadn't shown any sign of it because she wasn't sure about the man's identity.
She could've alerted the bodyguards right away, but that would've caused a scene in the café.
Plus, even if they caught him, he might not have told the truth.
It was better to hold back and then investigate him.
She needed to know what he was up to and who backed him.
"Well, you're something else," Joyce said in awe.
"I was sitting across from you, and I didn't even notice when he planted the tracker."
Adeline smiled lightly. "Probably because I really dislike being touched by other men."
Even though the man had only brushed against her clothes, she still felt a wave of disgust.
And that was just one reason. The other was that she was indeed very observant.
If the person had been a woman, Adeline probably would ve noticed too.
"So, what did you tell the bodyguard?" Joyce asked curiously.
"I told him to check if it's really a tracker," Adeline said. "If it is..."
A strange smile crept across her face, eerily similar to Alberto's earlier in the day.
"Then we'll have some fun with him," she added.
Joel had been staring at the screen of his tablet.
There was a map on it, and a red dot indicated the location of the tracker.
The location seemed strange.
"Why did she go there?" Joel murmured.
The location was in a very remote area, a place where most people wouldn't go.
It was hard to imagine that someone like Adeline, the heiress of the Mendoza family, would visit such a place.
Even though she had bodyguards, the Mendoza family would never allow her to go there.
"Let's follow her," Joel said.
Krauss nodded and instructed the driver to start the car.
But soon, the location on the map started changing.
It was bouncing all over the place-one moment to the far east of the city, then to the far west, and then to the center.
They had no choice but to follow the tracker.
Eventually, their car stopped in a desolate area.
The tracker's location kept changing.
"Is she insane?" Joel growled, his veins popping in frustration.
The night was falling, and they were still chasing her.
"She's been running all over the place today.
What's she doing?"
At this moment, Krauss's expression darkened.
"Are you sure she hasn't noticed the tracker you put on her?" Krauss asked coldly. "I think we've. been played."
Joel, irritated, immediately retorted,
"Impossible!"
