Chapter 493: Devotion
"It doesn't matter anymore," Adeline said coolly.
Even if Russell hadn't told Harrison about her, none of this would've happened if he hadn't schemed in the first place.
Russell understood what she meant.
He didn't say another word, just lowered his head and stared quietly at the lucky charms in her hands.
"Would any of those charms ever be for me?
Probably not," Russell thought.
At this point, she must really hate him.
He had just witnessed Adeline and Harrison fighting, but there was no satisfaction in it for him-none at all.
"I heard the lucky charms here are pretty effective," Adeline remarked, glancing at Russell.
"Why don't you try getting one for yourself?"
Russell was caught off guard.
He never expected her to say that, but even if she only suggested he get one for himself, it warmed his heart just a little.
Normally, he didn't believe in this sort of thing.
But because it was Adeline, he went ahead and got himself a charm anyway.
With the charm clutched in his hand, he turned and spotted Adeline standing beneath the wishing tree in the distance.
Red ribbons and wooden plaques covered its branches, each one scrawled with names.
Whatever hope he'd felt just moments ago vanished in an instant.
He wanted to go over and pull her away from that tree.
After all, whoever's name Adeline was writing, it definitely wasn't his.
But in the end, he just stood there, frozen in place.
Silently, he watched as she bought a red ribbon and a wooden tag.
He watched her carefully write down two names, her face full of sincerity. She tied the ribbon to the tree, then hung the tag beside it.
He'd never imagined she could look so earnest.
She really wanted a future with Harrison.
At that moment, Russell felt like everything he'd done was nothing but a joke.
Even if she and Harrison were fighting, it was clear who filled her heart.
She would always carve out space for Harrison and no one else.
Even if, by some wild stretch of fate, she and Harrison did split up one day, she probably still wouldn't choose anyone else.
Russell let out a bitter laugh.
When Adeline finished her prayer and turned around, she saw him staring at her, pain written all over his face.
Truth be told, Adeline felt a pang of guilt too.
After all, Russell had helped her before.
He'd stepped in when that creep was harassing her and even played a part when Harrison got her away from Benjamin.
She didn't like Russell, but she'd never wanted to become his enemy.
Still, if he kept pushing, she couldn't keep backing down forever.
"Mr. Hunter, do you still need something?"
Adeline asked, her tone polite but distant. "If not, t'm leaving."
Russell wanted to say, "Let me drive you," but thought better of it.
Even if he offered, shed just refuse.
So he said nothing, just gave a faint nod.
Without hesitation, Adeline turned and walked away.
As soon as she stepped out of the church, she pulled out her phone and called Harrison.
He picked up right away.
"How was my acting?" he teased.
Adeline rolled her eyes.
"Pretty terrible," she shot back.
"Come on, it wasn't that bad, was it?"
"Aren't you worried I'd actually fall for it? I didn't even see the messages you sent before you called."
"I wasn't worried," Harrison replied, a soft laugh in his voice. "I know you, Addie. We've got enough chemistry that I knew you'd get it."
