Chapter 532: Question Her
As Joyce stepped out of the abandoned warehouse, she let out a long sigh of relief.
She could have stayed behind.
With Alberto and those strong men around, Callan was sure to get the lesson he deserved.
But she felt like she needed to be there in person.
She had to say those things to Callan herself.
Only then would she feel at ease.
Connie and Adeline had, of course, come with her.
Alberto glanced at his wristwatch and said, “It's getting late. Let's go home."
He yawned, clearly exhausted.
Once everything was over, Adeline felt a bit sleepy as well.
She pulled the car door open, just about to get in, when a bloodcurdling scream ripped through the warehouse-Callan's scream.
It was so shrill, so gut-wrenching, that it jolted her back to her senses for, a split second.
But it was only for a split second.
Almost immediately, she regained her composure and slipped into the car.
Callan was the last person who deserved any sympathy.
He had ordered people to attack Sam.
If Sam hadn't been lucky, he'd probably be... well, dead by now.
And after that, Callan had gone after Joyce.
He had harassed and stalked her relentlessly.
Thank God Jamarion had kept him on a tight leash for a while, letting Joyce live in peace for once.
But now Jamarion had fallen ill.
And that gave Callan the nerve to run wild again.
In fact, back when Callan was still pestering Sam and Joyce, Harrison had already wanted to take him out.
It would've been a bit of a hassle.
But if Harrison had really wanted to, it wouldn't have been impossible.
Sam, however, had stopped him.
Harrison had already done so much for him.
Sam didn't want to keep relying on him for everything.
Besides, he was Joyce's boyfriend.
He believed it was his responsibility to handle this himself.
So he had been quietly planning for some time.
But Callan actually dared to follow them all the way to Yewhaina.
Well then, he couldn't blame them for not playing nice.
Joyce's heart didn't stir in the slightest; she climbed into the car with a blank expression.
One by one, several cars drove off, leaving Callan behind in the warehouse. No one spared him a glance.
Adeline, exhausted, nearly dozed off in the car on the way home.
She was looking forward to a nice, hot shower and a good rest. But when the car arrived at the Mendoza's estate, she saw two familiar figures standing outside the gate.
They were Pedro's parents-Fletcher and Litzy.
As soon as they saw the car, Fletcher and Litzy frantically waved at them.
They had once been on good terms, so Alberto instructed the driver to stop the car, then opened the door and got out.
"Alberto." Litzy immediately rushed over, her face pleading as she looked at him. "I heard Adeline has returned. Where is she? I need to talk to her."
Alberto furrowed his brow.
He wasn't too keen on letting Litzy have any contact with Adeline.
After all, Adeline had been kidnapped because of their son, Pedro.
Seeing them again might make Adeline feel uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry," Alberto said. "Adeline is very tired. I need to take her home right now."
"Alberto, please," Litzy cried, wiping away tears.
"For the sake of a close relationship, please let me see Adeline. I've watched you grow up. Please..."
Alberto hesitated, unsure whether to relent.
Just then, the door of the car behind them opened.
Adeline stepped out.
"Adeline." Litzy's face brightened as if she had just seen a lifeline, and she rushed forward.
But, afraid of upsetting Adeline, Litzy didn't dare touch her. Instead, she stood in front of her, crying, and cautiously asked, "Adeline, do you know where Pedro is now?"
As soon as the question was asked, Alberto's frown deepened.
Adeline shot him a look to reassure him and then said, "I don't know."
Litzy wiped her tears and said, "He said he was coming to your place because Benjamin was there... He said that Benjamin had deceived him, so he was going to capture him and take revenge. But just recently, we lost contact with him. One of the men he took with him called us and said that Pedro had been kidnapped. He still hasn't been found, and they don't even know who took him."
Litzy looked up at Adeline for a moment, then quickly lowered her head.
Adeline asked, "Do you think it was me who took him?"
Her tone was calm, with no sign of anger.
"I... l'm not accusing you, Adeline," Litzy said, feeling embarrassed and upset. "It's just that, after everything that happened, it made sense that you hate him, so..."
"I don't hate him," Adeline said, "but I really don't want to see him again."
Litzy was taken aback, unsure of how to respond.
"Since I don't want to see him, why would I send someone to kidnap him and bring him to me to add to my own misery?" Adeline continued.
Litzy still wasn't giving up. "But..."
"That's enough." Joyce, who had also gotten out of the car, walked over to Adeline's side with a look of displeasure. "You really are something. Your son tried to kidnap Adeline, and now you're here, questioning her about it? Don't you see how absurd that is?"
Litzy's face turned pale, a mix of anger and guilt.
"I'm his mother... Please understand my concern," Litzy said softly:
"Understand you?" Joyce said, her words coming fast and furious. "Who's going to understand Adeline? Do you have any idea what she went through when she was kidnapped? Did you ever think about how she suffered? It wasn't for your son, Adeline wouldn't have been kidnapped in the first place. And now you have the nerve to
question her-for the sake of your
son? Honestly, the reason your son turned out like this has everything to do with your spoiling and indulging him. And another thing-Adeline said she had nothing to do with it, which means she didn't. Do you seriously think she'd need to lie to you?"
"Where did Pedro go?" Litzy nearly broke down.
"He... he went to your place, and now someone's kidnapped him. How could this happen? He had no enemies there..."
"You idiot!" Joyce snapped.
Adeline coldly said, "Who told you that he had no enemies there? Have you forgotten why he went there in the first place?"
With that, she turned and walked into the Mendoza's estate with the others.
She had no obligation to explain anything to Fletcher and Litzy.
She had said all she needed to say. Whether they figured it out was up to them.
Besides, Litzy was accusing her of kidnapping Pedro, which was irritating enough.
There was no point in arguing with them further.
It would only make things harder for herself.
So, Adeline quickly brushed the matter aside and moved on.
