Chapter 495: Here Without Warning
Adeline's patience was wearing thin just looking at her.
Why didn't she think about the consequences before doing something like this?
Now, after everything had blown up in her face, she came crawling back, sobbing and begging on her knees.
Adeline stared at Elissa, a trace of sorrow flickering in her eyes.
"Elissa," she said softly, "how could you use the memory of a friend who's been gone for so many years?"
Elissa flinched, her whole body trembling.
She looked like she wanted to disappear into the floor, unable to even meet Adeline's eyes.
Suddenly, as if something clicked in her mind, Elissa blurted out, "Adeline, I was wrong, but you know I was always sincere to you and your mom! Don't you remember? When you were little, your mom got really sick. Your dad was away, and you were just a kid. I happened to stop by your house and found your mom burning up with a fever. I rushed her to the hospital just in time."
Her words stirred up an old memory for Adeline.
It really had happened.
She'd been so young, but some details still lingered in her mind.
Mateo was away on business, gone for several days, and during that time, her mother fell seriously ill at home.
Adeline had tried to help, bringing water and medicine, but after taking the medicine, her mother only seemed to get worse.
She lay in bed, burning up, and Adeline, terrified and helpless, had tried calling Mateo, but he couldn't make it back in time.
Adeline broke down, crying in fear.
That was when Elissa came by to drop something off and discovered her mother's condition.
Without hesitation, she'd rushed her to the hospital.
The doctor said if they'd waited any longer, it
could have been life-threatening.
"Adeline, you know I really did save your mom's life that time," Elissa pleaded, her voice thick with emotion.
All these years had passed. Honestly, even Elissa had forgotten about it.
Maybe it was just the instinct to survive, but now she clung to the memory desperately.
Adeline pressed her lips together.
Elissa wasn't wrong.
Even though her mother died young in the end, without Elissa, she might have gone even sooner.
Elissa really had once saved her mother's life.
"Elissa, please, just let us go this once. We'll never bother you again," Elissa sobbed.
But after everything that had happened, Adeline knew she could never trust them again.
No one would ever try to use them to get to her again.
Adeline's voice was cool and even as she said. "TIl let this go, for the sake of what you did for my mother. But every penny you took has to be donated to charity. That's my only condition."
"Okay." Elissa's relief was obvious. She practically dragged Alvaro out the door, terrified Adeline might change her mind.
After they'd walked some distance, Alvaro looked back to make sure no one was following, then grumbled, "What the hell was that? Mom, after all that trouble, we're left with nothing!"
Elissa sighed, a hint of bitterness in her voice.
"Honestly, we should be grateful things didn't end worse. I never should've let greed get the better of me and taken that money to set up Adeline... If I hadn't remembered saving her mother, who knows where we'd be right now?"
"We didn't even do anything that bad! We just invited her to hang out for a few days.
That's all. It's not like we did anything serious...
Alvaro protested.
But Elissa was unusually clear-headed. "Is it really that simple? We took the money and kept her here, not letting her go home. We don't know what the people behind this really wanted. Maybe they meant her harm. In the end, we were only thinking about ourselves, not anyone else's safety."
Alvaro stared at her, at a loss. "Mom, I..."
Elissa let out a tired sigh. "Do you really think Im that clueless, Alvaro? I'm a lot more aware than you realize. I just don't usually say much."
Alvaro grumbled, frustrated, "I thought we'd at least get enough to buy a house, maybe a car. Now, we're left with nothing but a mess."
"If anyone's to blame, it's us," Elissa said with a bitter laugh. "If we'd just resisted temptation, none of this would have happened. We'd still have our peace, and Adeline wouldn't hate us."
And if trouble ever came their way in the future, they could've counted on Adeline's help.
But now, that was out of the question.
Whatever debt she'd owed for saving Adeline's mother was used up.
There was no way Adeline would want anything more to do with them.
Alvaro looked back once more and whispered, "Mom, what if we just keep a little for ourselves? They gave us so much. We could just hold onto a few thousand. Adeline's so busy. Is she really going to check?"
Elissa's face turned stern. "We'll donate it all. That money was never meant for us."
It stung, letting go of such a large sum, but the fear still fresh in her mind pushed her to make up her mind.
"We have to give away every last cent," she said, her voice firm. "You know Adeline isn't just anyone now. Even if she doesn't check herself, she could have someone else watch us. If she ever found out we lied to her, we'd be finished." Alvaro fell silent.
Elissa went on, "And we didn't even finish the job for the person who hired us. Who knows how Adeline found out, or if that person might come after us..."
That thought made Alvaro nervous. too.
They didn't know Russell had already exposed everything to Adeline, or that he'd completely forgotten about them.
The two of them spent the whole way home shaken and uneasy, and for a long time after, they lived in constant fear and anxiety.
Harrison always appeared just like that-out of nowhere.
Adeline had barely settled into her hotel room when there was a knock at the door.
She opened it, and there he was, looking at her with eyes burning with longing.
He stepped inside. The moment Adeline closed the door, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her deeply.
It hadn't even been that long since they'd been apart, but the longing between them felt overwhelming, almost too much to bear.
All their missing and yearning poured into that one kiss until Adeline thought she might run out of breath.
Only then did Harrison finally let her go, but he couldn't take his eyes off her for even a second.
