Chapter 537: A Challenging Task
After buying the bags, Joyce was happy.
But Adeline felt a little strange.
Of course, this wasn't related to Joyce buying bags.
It was just that something felt off deep inside her.
It felt like there were eyes watching her from the shadows.
The next time she had that feeling, Adeline couldn't help but turn her head.
But aside from the usual passing pedestrians, there was no one unusual in sight.
Could it be one of the bodyguards tailing them for protection? But the bodyguards had always followed them discreetly before.
And she had never felt anything like this.
In fact, there was this faint, creeping panic in her chest.
Bodyguards were supposed to protect them, so they shouldn't make her feel uneasy.
Joyce, after swiping the card and buying all the bags she liked, turned to look at Adeline.
Noticing something was off, she asked in confusion, "Adeline, what's wrong?"
Adeline quickly shook her head. "It's nothing."
After all, it was just a feeling of hers. Maybe she was overthinking.
There was no need to mention it and make Joyce worry too.
"Let's go check out the shoe store over there. I still want to buy a few pairs of shoes."
As for the bags she had just bought, someone would take them back to the Mendoza family for her, so she didn't need to worry.
The two continued shopping, unaware that, in the shadows, besides the bodyguards, several pairs of eyes were watching them.
A moment later, a young man in a mansion received a phone call from his subordinate.
"What's going on?"
"Boss, we followed the target for a while," his subordinate said, sounding excited. "It's truly a challenging task. The lady's got many elite bodyguards following her. Even though we were careful, we almost got discovered by them. Luckily, we managed to cover our tracks." The man smiled slightly and asked, "So, what's the chance?"
"Only fifty percent."
At that, the smile on the man's face faded slightly.
"Fifty percent? That doesn't sound like something you'd tell me."
"There's nothing we can do," the voice on the other end sounded a bit defeated. "I've never dealt with a target so well protected. I guess something must have happened to her before, which is why her family is protecting her so tightly."
"Since it's only fifty percent, we won't take the job," the man said. "I don't want you to ruin the organization's reputation."
"Don't. You know us. The more challenging it is, the more excited we get. Don't turn us down yet. Give us two more days, and we'll find a way."
"Two days? They're pushing us hard."
"Then... just one day. If we haven't found a breakthrough by tomorrow night, we'll call it off."
The man thought for a moment and said, "Fine, since you've done so much for the organization, I'll give you this chance."
"Thanks, boss."
After hanging up, the man stood up and walked to the window.
From here, he could see the backyard.
At that moment, a few wolves were fighting in the yard.
Blood was splattering everywhere.
The man watched with interest, even
pouring himself a glass of wine, enjoying the sight.
As the last two wolves were left standing, a knock sounded at the door.
"Come in," the man said, bored.
A beautiful blonde woman walked in, holding several sheets of paper.
She approached him, placed the papers on the table, and then put her arms around his waist.
"Watching wolves again? Can they compare to me?"
The man smiled and said, "If you want to go down there and fight with them, l'd fully support you. How about I throw you in there?"
His lazy tone belied the dark implications behind his words.
The woman's face stiffened for a moment, then she coquettishly said, "You're such a tease."
She said this, but deep down, she believed the man would actually do it.
She released his waist, picked up the papers, and She released his waist, picked up the papers, and respectfully handed them to him.
"This is all the information on the target."
The man took the papers and glanced through them, his interest piqued.
"Not bad. Not only is she the heiress of the Mendoza family, but she's also Harrison's secretary, and now, his girlfriend. She's connected with Russell from the Hunter Group, Benjamin from the Tillman family, and Pedro from the Livingston family...”
As he looked at Adeline's photo, he remarked, "She's so beautiful. No wonder so many men are obsessed with her."
The blonde woman immediately frowned.
"Don't tell me you've taken an interest in her.
She's our target."
The man smiled, but his eyes grew cold.
"Catherine, are you trying to teach me how to act?"
lowered her head and said, "I didn't mean to. It's just that I spoke out of turn."
"That guy was right," the man said, raising an eyebrow. "This really is a challenging target."
He added, "I think I'll have to meet her in person."
After speaking, he tossed the papers aside. The papers fluttered to the floor.
The man returned to watching the wolves fight in the backyard.
And just then, the wolf he had his eye on slowly collapsed to the ground.
The last remaining wolf stood there, blood-soaked and snarling, murder still burning in its eyes.
The man frowned, displeased, as if annoyed that the wolf he favored hadn't managed to win.
"Go, make sure the last one gets killed too."
"Yes."
After shopping for a while, Adeline and Joyce were tired and walked into a coffee shop.
They ordered two cold drinks and slouched in their chairs, each absorbed in their phones.
One of the drinks was placed on the table in front of them, and Adeline thought it was the one she had ordered. She looked up, only to see a young man smiling at her.
This man wasn't wearing the uniform.
He probably wasn't a staff member.
Joyce immediately knew what was going on.
He was just another man trying to approach Adeline.
She was used to this by now.
"Hi, beauty," the young man said politely, with a charming smile. "Can we be friends? This drink is on me."
"Sorry," Adeline replied. "I'm good, thanks."
After that, she lowered her head and returned to her phone.
It wasn't that she was pretending to be cold.
It was just that if she didn't act indifferent, some men would become relentless.
She couldn't stand that kind of attention.
