Chapter 523: I Will Protect You
Callan didn't respond.
The other man, clearly irritated, spoke up.
"Your father's.still lying in a hospital bed, and you're already ready to leave?"
"Is this how you're going to act as a son?"
They had learned about Jamarion's current condition on their way over.
These two men had been with Jamarion for years and held some power. Being Callan's seniors, they had the right to lecture him.
But Callan didn't have the patience. His mind was elsewhere, consumed with the thought of finally meeting Joyce. He had no time to listen to them.
"I've got something to do," he muttered gruffly.
He tried to get into the elevator, but one of the men blocked his path and said, "Your father's in danger, and you're running off to do what? What could be more important than your father?"
"I'm not his only kid. Why are you all coming after me? What about Daphne? She
hasn't even come over yet, and you're lecturing me?"
The two men exchanged a glance. One of them said, "We already told Daphne. She's on her way here."
The other man, seeing Callan's expression, softened his tone. "Callan, we're doing this for you. Your father has more than one child.
His wealth, his power—he can give it to anyone. This is your chance to show him where you stand, isn't it?"
What he said wasn't lost on Callan, but right now, he wasn't interested in these calculations.
"What do you want me to do? I've already sent him to the hospital. Isn't that enough? Daphne's always been absent when he needed her. Now that he's sick, let her take care of him. Move."
Without a second thought, Callan shoved the man blocking his way aside.
The man could've stopped him, but he didn't. He just watched, disappointed, as Callan entered the elevator and left.
The other man muttered, "He's never going to amount to anything."
"He's nothing compared to Daphne... If I were Jamarion, I'd leave everything to her. Callan only cares about that woman. Let him chase after her."
They had already given Callan a chance.
But his actions left them deeply disappointed.
Now, they both had plans in mind.
They were loyal to Jamarion, and with his life hanging by a thread, they knew who to support.
Since Callan wasn't cutting it, they'd throw their weight behind Daphne.
Not long after Callan left, Daphne arrived at the hospital in a hurry.
Her feelings toward Jamarion were complicated.
She hated him, but he was still her father.
With his sudden illness, she came rushing to his side.
Looking at Jamarion lying on the hospital bed, bale and lifeless. Dabhne couldn't helo but feel a pang of regret.
In her memory, Jamarion had always been that ruthless, decisive father-sharp as a blade and swift to act.
But time spared no one.
It could turn a man who once pulled the strings of fate with effortless ease into the shell he was now.
Staring at him for a moment, she suddenly remembered something. "Where's Callan?" she asked.
Someone replied, "He left in a hurry just now. No one knows where he went."
"He left?"
Daphne knew enough about the situation. After a moment's thought, she figured out where Callan had gone. She quickly grabbed her phone and called Adeline.
When the phone rang, Adeline and Joyce had just come out of the hotel with Alondra.
Hearing Daphne's words, Adeline furrowed her brows. "I see. Are you alright?"
She knew the relationship between Daphne and Jamarion wasn't great.
If it were any other time, Daphne wouldn't have changed her last name.
But Jamarion was still her father.
Daphne's heart wouldn't be easy knowing he was in danger.
"Don't worry. I'm fine," Daphne said. "He has owed too much for too long. His time's come.
Honestly, it came a little too late."
Adeline didn't want to comment on Daphne's domestic affairs, so she stayed silent.
"But you all, especially Miss Monroe, need to be careful with Callan. He's like a mad dog.
Before, Jamarion could control him, but now that he's in a coma, no one can hold Callan back."
"Alright, I know. Don't worry."
Adeline reassured her. She knew there were plenty of bodyguards around, watching their
every move.
They were good, too-stealthy enough to never let them feel watched.
Even if Callan was crazy, he wasn't a match for those bodyguards. And he certainly wasn't bold enough to take them on directly.
"By the way..." Daphne's voice lowered. "I can't join you in Yewhaina this weekend.
Let's plan for another time."
"Okay. If you need anything, just let me know."
"Thanks."
They chatted for a moment longer before hanging up.
Joyce, who had been by Adeline's side, overheard their conversation.
She gritted her teeth and said, "Though Jamarion's no saint, I really wish nothing happens to him. Who else could control Callan if he's gone?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, she shivered.
"Adeline, I can't shake the feeling that Callan's out there somewhere, lurking and watching me."
Alondra didn't understand what was going on, but from Joyce's tone, she could sense there was danger.
She gently tugged at Joyce's hand and said softly, "Don't be scared, Joyce. If bad people come, I'll protect you."
Joyce couldn't help but laugh.
"Well, thank you," she said, patting Alondra's head. "You're such a good kid. We really do love you."
Alondra smiled shyly, feeling a little lighter and easing Joyce's tension.
Just then, a car pulled up quickly, stopping right in front of them.
Adeline jumped, thinking it might be Callan, instinctively stepping in front of Joyce to protect her.
Joyce quickly said, "It's alright. It's Sam's car."
No sooner had she spoken than Sam got out from the driver's seat.
He walked up to Joyce, his expression serious.
"Did you hear about Jamarion being hospitalized?"
Harrison always had his ear to the ground.
The moment Jamarion entered the hospital,
Harrison let Sam know.
Despite knowing Joyce had bodyguards protecting her, Sam still couldn't relax. He had to be there, by her side.
"We just heard," Joyce replied. "Daphne called Adeline."
Sam nodded, his eyes flashing with a hint of fury.
