Chapter 433: You're the One I Love Most
Regina had long hoped her son would finally settle down, instead of wasting his days partying and chasing women.
Now that someone had finally made Sam serious about love, she was overjoyed.
"Don't worry, Mom," Sam said with a gentle smile as he turned to glance at Joyce, his voice soft and full of sincerity. "I won't let her down."
"You two are still in Daltoria, right?" Regina asked.
"Yeah," Sam replied.
"Then make sure you take good care of her in that foreign place. Take her out, let her have fun, and if she wants something-buy it. Don't you dare start acting stingy, got it?"
Sam chuckled, clearly amused. "Mom, come on. You really think I'm that cheap?"
Regina continued to rattle off a few more instructions before finally hanging up.
Right after the call ended, Sam's phone was flooded with a fresh wave of messages from his friends, but he had no intention of responding to any of them. When he noticed
Joyce also putting her phone away, he cleared his throat awkwardly and, summoning all his courage, reached out to hold her hand.
The moment her soft fingers met his palm, a spark seemed to shoot straight through his body, making every nerve light up.
He immediately tensed, nervous and unsure of himself, but after a few seconds, he forced himself to relax and properly hold her hand with more confidence.
To his immense relief, Joyce didn't pull away.
Instead, she gently squeezed his hand back.
And so they strolled slowly through the plaza, hand in hand, not saying much, yet sharing everything in silence.
Up ahead, faint music drifted through the night air.
They walked toward the sound and saw a street performer standing on a low platform with a guitar slung over his shoulder.
He was singing, his voice low and husky, rich with emotion, as if every note carried the weight of a story.
Joyce, unfamiliar with the Daltorian lyrics, leaned closer to Sam and whispered, "What's he singing about?"
Sam leaned in as well, replying just as quietly, "It's called You're the One I Love Most."
The moment those words left his lips, both of them froze.
A flush of color crept up Joyce's cheeks in an instant.
Sam felt his own face begin to burn too.
What he said was simply the title of the song.
But in this setting, under the stars, with her hand in his-how could it not sound like a heartfelt confession?
He wasn't sure what to do. If he explained it was just the name of the song, it might seem like he was backpedaling. But if he didn't explain... the moment might get even more awkward.
Thankfully, Joyce didn't press the issue.
Instead, she let the moment pass and softly said, "It's a beautiful song."
Sam exhaled and smiled. "I know how to sing it too. Next time, I'll sing it just for you."
"I'd like that."
They shared a smile, and just like that, the earlier tension dissolved into something warmer, something easier.
After listening to the performer sing a few more songs, they noticed the crowd around the plaza had thinned out.
"It's getting late," Sam said, glancing at his watch.
"Let's head back to the hotel."
They were staying at the same hotel-and not by coincidence.
Sam had arranged for his room to be directly across from Joyce's. He simply wanted to be close to her.
"Okay," Joyce replied.
During the car ride back, Sam kept holding her hand, unwilling to let go. Joyce didn't stop him.
As the car moved through the quiet streets, Joyce's phone buzzed.
She used her free hand to take it out and saw that it was a message from Adeline.
"Where are you? "it read.
"On the way back to the hotel," Joyce replied.
"Tell me everything that happened tonight!"
came Adeline's immediate response.
It was only a single exclamation mark, but Joyce could feel her best friend's impatience leaping off the screen.
It was obvious Adeline had already seen her post.
Most likely, she had been holding back from texting her earlier in case she was interrupting the date.
Joyce glanced at her hand, still wrapped in Sam's.
Typing with one hand was doable, but not exactly convenient-and besides, tonight's events couldn't be summed up in a few lines anyway.
So she simply replied, "I'll tell you everything when I get back."
