Chapter 457: Digging Up the Past
Edward said nothing.
Britney was trembling with rage as she shoved him-twice.
"Say something! Cat got your tongue now?"
Edward stumbled back a few steps, temples
pounding, frustration boiling in his chest.
Alondra, caught in the middle, was so frightened she didn't even dare cry.
"You heartless bastard!" Britney shrieked, her voice shrill with betrayal. "I gave you over ten years of my life! I gave birth to your child! Now you come back to this mansion, living in luxury, and you want to throw me away like trash? Over my dead body, Edward. You'll never get rid of me.
I'll cling to you until the day I die!"
She had waited for this-for Edward to bring her back into the Thomson family as his proper wife.
But what did she get instead? A dismissal?
She couldn't accept it.
After enduring her accusations for a while, Edward finally snapped.
"Oh, please! Don't start with the guilt trip.
I've been good to you, haven't I? Did I ever mistreat you? Without me, you'd still be peddling trinkets on a street corner in Mugroaton! Did I starve you? Did I deprive you of anything? As for the child-you wanted one, remember? That was your idea."
Britney stared at him, stunned.
She clearly hadn't expected him to flip the blame so shamelessly.
She lunged at him, pounding his chest with her fists. "You bastard! I can't believe I ever trusted you! If I'd known you were this kind of man, I never...
"Cut the act," Edward sneered. "If you hadn't come with me, would you have had those ten peaceful years? Don't forget, you knew I had a wife and son when you agreed to run off with me. What kind of woman does that make you? A homewrecker. You were never innocent in this."
"Bullshit!" Britney screamed. "If I'm the homewrecker, then you're the cheating scumbag! Or did you forget what you told me back then? You said that you didn't care about your family, didn't want your wife or your kid anymore."
Their voices grew louder, each hurling bitter accusations.
Alondra tried to stop them.
But both turned on her, yelling without thinking.
Frightened and helpless, the little girl ran into the bathroom and locked the door, trembling.
Outside, the shouting didn't stop.
With all their secrets laid bare, neither held back anymore.
"Let me make it real clear," Edward said coldly.
"You getting into the Thomson family? Not happening. My Dad has already made his stance-either all three of us leave together, or you leave alone. Either way, you're not coming in."
"Then both of you come with me!" Britney's face turned scarlet. "What do you expect me to do alone in Yewhaina? How am I
supposed to live?"
"I'll give you money," Edward said flatly. "I'll even talk to some old colleagues and get you a job."
Britney laughed-sharp, bitter. "You think you can buy me off with a few bills and some dead-end job? So I go break my back in Yewhaina while you two sit pretty in this mansion? Why should I accept that?"
"Because we're Thomsons. And you're not."
"I'm your wife! I'm Alondra's mother!"
"Please. To the public, Myra is still my wife."
Technically true. Most people outside the family didn't even know he had returned, let alone that he had divorced Myra.
"I knew it!" Britney shouted, cracking. "Now that you re back, you're starting to see her in a new light again, aren't you? You want to get back together with her, don't you?"
Edward didn't answer.
But truthfully? Yes—he had thought about it.
Not that Myra would ever agree.
"God, you're disgusting!" Britney spat. "Is it just because you can't have her that you think she's better than me now?"
"Enough with the drama," Edward snapped.
"You should be grateful l even came to see you today. You want to go back to Yewhaina quietly? Then fine. I'll make sure you're taken care of. But if you keep acting like this-don't expect to ever see me or Alondra again.
You'll get nothing. No money. No job. Nothing."
"Is that a threat?" Britney's voice turned ice cold.
"You think you can intimidate me after everything we've been through? Dream on."
With that, she raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face.
Edward reeled back, stunned-then returned the blow.
The two of them launched into a full-blown fight.
Normally, Britney wouldn't stand a chance.
But today, she was so furious, so unhinged, she fought like a woman possessed.
She clawed at his face, leaving bloody scratches.
Edward's rage surged.
"Have you lost your damn mind? Can't you think about Alondra for one second? She could have a future here—a life as a Thomson heiress!"
For a moment, Britney froze. Her expression faltered.
Edward thought he was finally getting through.
"So she gets a golden future, and I get to rot in Yewhaina? Hell no!" Britney screamed.
Edward was speechless.
She stepped closer, eyes blazing. "You leave me here, take Alondra with you, and I swear, I'll go public. I'll tell everyone how Edward Thomson abandoned his wife and son to run off with a mistress-and now wants to toss her away, too." Edward's face darkened.
Britney sneered. "Sure, you've been gone over a decade. Maybe you don't care about your own reputation anymore. But you know this will affect the Thomsons. They'll be humiliated. You think they'll let you stay after that? 'll make sure you're kicked out just like me."
Edward was trembling with tury.
She'd hit him where it hurt.
And he knew-she would absolutely do it.
If she made good on that threat, Lorenzo would explode.
He might be thrown out of the family entirely.
He couldn't let that happen.
Britney, sensing his fear, smirked triumphantly.
That smug look-that sense of control-pushed Edward over the edge.
If only she would disappear.
Without her, his life would be clean. He could stay here, claw back some power, maybe even make a name for himself again.
But with her in the way... she was a ticking bomb.
And if she refused to leave quietly, then don't blame him for doing something drastic.
A switch flipped. With a flash of violence in his eyes, Edward lunged at her.
