Chapter 430: It’s Too Late Now
Kira's knees throbbed with pain from kneeling on the hard floor, her tears flowing freely.
People walked by at the entrance of the hospital, and she felt too ashamed to struggle or cry out.
She wanted to stand up, but the two bodyguards were relentless. Every time she tried to get up, they would push her back down.
"Can I at least see my dad one more time?" Kira pleaded softly. "I was wrong. I won't talk back anymore. I'll apologize sincerely. Just let me kneel outside the ward instead of here. There are too many people."
The bodyguards exchanged a glance.
One of them took out his phone and called Bruce.
Bruce answered.
After hearing the bodyguard's report, he simply said one sentence and hung up.
"What did my dad say?" Kira asked, her eyes full of hope.
"Mr. Goodwin said it's too late."
In an instant, Kira's face drained of color.
Meanwhile, Bruce stood at the hospital entrance, watching Kira kneeling outside.
His heart ached.
This was his own daughter.
He couldn't bear to watch her kneel there at the entrance of the hospital.
But Harrison stood next to him.
He didn't feel guilty towards Bruce. After all, Kira had brought this upon herself; no one else was to blame.
But Bruce and the Thomson family had a long history together.
So, he couldn't completely disregard Bruce.
After a while, Bruce sighed.
"It's fine, Harrison," he said. "I may feel sorry for Kira, but I think this lesson is good for her. She didn't make a huge mistake this time, but if she keeps going like this, who knows what trouble she might get herself into next? What if I can't protect her?"
After this, even if Kira didn't change her mindset, at least she would think twice before acting out again.
Bruce didn't hold a grudge against the Mendoza family for not letting her off easy.
He understood, having a daughter himself.
Of course, he could empathize with their need to protect Adeline.
Harrison said, "Bruce, you need to keep an eye on her."
"Don't worry. I will," Bruce replied.
Kira knelt at the hospital entrance for a full day and night.
She was on the verge of collapsing.
But worse than the physical pain was the humiliation.
The steady stream of people passing by, every one of them throwing her strange glances.
Some even took pictures and posted them
online.
Her classmates and friends saw it.
There was no way she could hold her head up again.
After kneeling for a whole day and night, Bruce immediately had her helped back to the hotel.
Kira trembled as she cried to Bruce.
"I'm not really your daughter, am I? If I were your real daughter, how could you do this to me?"
Bruce was filled with sorrow, but there was nothing he could do.
"Don't you understand yet? I'm protecting you. If I didn't do this, the Mendoza family and Harrison would be even harder on you."
"But can't you just protect me?"
"You're old enough to know better, yet you don't understand the reason?" Bruce sighed, rubbing his forehead. "Everything we have now is thanks to the Thomson family. If they want, they can take it all back at any time.
What do you think would happen to you if that happens ? The whole family would be dragged down."
Kira bit her lip, unable to reply.
All these years in Daltoria, she had been treated like royalty, flaunting her status, completely immersed in the fantasy of being the daughter of the Goodwin family.
She had forgotten that her status relied entirely on the Thomson family.
Her father wasn't all-powerful.
In fact, he had been desperately cleaning up her messes.
"This should be over now," Bruce said tiredly.
"Rest for now. Once you've recovered, I'll have someone take you home. I've already spoken to your mother. After we send you home, she'll take you to your grandmother's place for a while."
Kira's grandmother was a strict and upright woman.
She was tough when it came to raising Kira.
So Kira had always been afraid of her and had often refused to stay at her place.
Bruce and his wife had always felt sorry for Kira and didn't force her.
But now, Bruce regretted it.
If only he had sent Kira there more often to be disciplined, maybe she wouldn't have turned out like this.
Kira had wanted to fight back, But now she had no strength left.
She thought, "Fine, whatever. At least, looking at Harrison, it's clear he won't have any feelings for me anymore."
She hated him, but what good would that do? Adeline knew Kira had been kneeling at the hospital entrance for a full day and night.
But she couldn't feel sorry for her.
After all, Kira had genuinely wished for her death.
Adeline chose not to think about that unpleasant woman anymore. She focused on healing.
Though she had been in the hospital for a while, her family, friends, and loved ones had been by her side, so she didn't feel bored.
Every day, she received a bouquet of flowers, sometimes roses, sometimes lilies, and sometimes lavender.
The nurses delivered them, but they never knew who sent them. They only said someone would take care of the flowers for her and make sure they got to Adeline.
Adeline had a feeling that it should be from Russell.
And Harrison likely guessed the same because whenever the flowers were brought in, Harrison would glance at them with an unreadable expression.
Adeline had asked the nurses to pass on a message to stop sending flowers.
But the next day, another bouquet arrived.
The staff couldn't refuse the order. After all, they had been paid to deliver the flowers.
Adeline realized it was time to have a serious
conversation with Russell.
After speaking with Harrison, she dialed Russell's number.
Russell answered quickly.
"Miss Hensley, is there something you need?" His voice was as gentle as ever.
"Mr. Hunter," Adeline said politely, "The flowers these past days—were they from you?"
Russell was silent for a moment before responding with a soft "Mm."
"I really appreciate the flowers. They're beautiful. But please, no more. There's too many, and the room doesn't have space for them."
Russell fell silent again.
Just as Adeline thought he wouldn't respond, he finally spoke. "I understand, Miss Hensley. I hope you recover quickly."
With that, he hung up.
Adeline sighed softly.
Russell was a good man, but he was also very lonely.
Adeline truly hoped Russell would stop liking her because she couldn't give him anything in return.
When Adeline was on the phone with Russell, Harrison took a brief leave.
Adeline knew he was giving her space.
Though Harrison was incredibly jealous, he always respected her needs.
Not long after she finished the call, Harrison returned.
"Back so soon?" Adeline smiled, holding out her hand. "Come here, give me a hug."
