After Jessica left, Desmond went to the kitchen door to check.
"There's no one around," Desmond whispered.
The two of them stood in front of the stove, glancing at the door while speaking quietly.
"If we can contact my family, they'll definitely come to save us," Adeline said. "But right now, we don't have access to any communication devices, and I can't leave this place. So, we need to figure out a way to get you out."
Desmond quickly glanced at the door before replying, "Actually, I secretly hid a phone."
"Really?" Adeline's heart skipped a beat.
"But it's dead," Desmond said in frustration.
"I brought two phones when I came here.
When I realized something was off, I kept one hidden. The guard who searched me didn't check thoroughly, so they didn't find it. But the phone I left behind had only 20% battery. I managed to call my wife, but then it died. They took my charger, and there's no plug in the room to charge it."
Hearing that the phone was dead, Adeline felt a pang of disappointment.
But she quickly pulled herself together.
At least they had a phone now, that was a good thing.
"Then we'll find a way to charge it," Adeline said.
"How?"
Adeline thought for a moment and then asked, "Did you notice the guards outside when you arrived?"
"Yes, I saw them. I also noticed a row of single-story houses near here, looks like they were built recently. The guards probably stay there."
"The guards must have chargers," Adeline said.
"Do you cook the meals for them?"
Desmond said, "Yes, someone comes to pick it up."
"How many people?"
"Two."
Adeline said, "That's not too bad. Next time,
cook more food than they can carry. Then, you can go with them and see if you can steal a charger or a power bank," Adeline said. "Do you speak Mugroaton's language?"
"A little."
Adeline said, "Good, that will save us from any communication problems."
Desmond could try to build rapport with the guards, chat with them, and get on good terms.
If Desmond could manage to bring back a power bank, that would be ideal. But if it was just a charger, that would work too, because Adeline had seen a plug in the study.
Desmond wasn't allowed upstairs.
But she was.
Once he brought back the charger or power bank, she could sneak it up to the study and charge the phone.
Then, she could call out...
The thought made Adeline feel a surge of excitement.
"Wait." Adeline suddenly remembered something important. "Can your phone charge with their chargers or power banks? They should all be from Mugroaton."
"Well, what a coincidence," Desmond said with a grin. "I bought this phone when I traveled to Mugroaton with my wife and child. All the accessories are from Mugroaton, so it's perfect for their charging devices."
Adeline breathed a sigh of relief.
She looked at him seriously and said, "It's all on you now.
Hearing that, Desmond felt a surge of determination.
He slapped his chest and said, "Don't worry. I've got this."
To see his wife and child again, Desmond had to get his hands on that charging equipment.
"So, when do we start the plan?" Desmond asked eagerly. "Tonight?"
"Tonight won't work," Adeline said.
"Benjamin just left. The guards will be extra vigilant. If you make a move tonight, you'll be caught. Give it a couple of days; they'll be a little less cautious then."
Desmond nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that makes sense."
"But you can start talking to them tomorrow, build a rapport," Adeline said. "That way, when you go to their place, it won't raise any suspicion."
"Got it."
Just then, they heard footsteps approaching outside.
"It's probably Jessica coming back." Adeline quickly finished, and the two of them resumed preparing food, pretending to be busy.
Desmond even mocked her a little, saying, "Look at your knife skills. When I first started cooking, I cut better than that."
"What good is being good with a knife if your food tastes bad?"
"What did you say?" Desmond feigned
anger. "I bet the food you make isn't that great either."
When Jessica returned to the kitchen door, she saw Desmond and Adeline bickering while cooking.
She let out a small sigh of relief.
Of course, she had thought that the two might be planning an escape.
But when she thought about it, the place was full of guards, and they didn't have any communication devices. Even if they were planning something, they couldn't do anything.
So, Jessica didn't think much of it.
After dinner, Adeline went to the study.
She checked the plug on the wall. No problems there.
It should work.
The light in the study was still on, so that meant there was electricity.
Now, it all depended on whether Desmond could manage to get a charger.
Adeline felt that Desmond was quite clever.
The chances of success seemed high.
She rubbed her temples and walked to the window.
It was just the time between dusk and nightfall.
At times like this, melancholy had a way of sneaking in, uninvited yet impossible to ignore.
Looking at the sky, Adeline suddenly felt engulfed by a wave of intense loneliness and sorrow.
She missed her parents, Alberto, and Harrison.
But quickly, she gathered herself.
Now that she had hope, everything would change.
Soon, she might be able to contact them and finally leave this wretched place.
Meanwhile, in the row of houses where the guards were staying, one guard was sneaking a bathroom.
"Benjamin left today. He doesn't seem to be coming back anytime soon."
The voice on the other end said something, and the guard responded, "I've found out everything. The woman Benjamin's keeping here looks just like his deceased lover, and that's why he's so desperate to keep her with him. She's very important to him, and he's willing to risk offending many people just to bring her here. If you can get her, it's like holding Benjamin's life in your hands."
"I'll send you the location. Hurry up. The longer you wait, the more things might go wrong," the guard added.
Over the next few days, Desmond began following Adeline's plan, trying to build a relationship with the guards.
He first started with the two guards who came to pick up the food.
At first, they ignored him completely.
But men always find common ground to talk about.
After a few attempts, they began chatting.
