Chapter 403: I'll Show You How It's Done
Desmond thought, "How could they make things harder for me when I am already in such a miserable state?"
Since Desmond began working as a chef, no one had ever criticized his cooking.
In fact, if he had stayed in Orianto, he would've made quite a bit of money.
He shouldn't have been swayed by the enormous salary here.
He never should've come to this godforsaken place.
Jessica noticed the sullen look on his face and said, "Let me remind you, Miss Hensley is very special to Mr. Tillman. If you disrespect her, your fate might be much worse than you think."
Desmond couldn't help but shudder when he heard that.
He thought of all the bodyguards outside and the fact that all his communication devices had been confiscated when he arrived...
"Ugh, forget it. I have to comply," he thought.
If the chance ever arose, he would escape from this place.
Desmond followed Jessica to the dining room.
Adeline was still sitting at the table, looking thoroughly displeased.
"Miss, this is Desmond, the chef who's been preparing your meals," Jessica said.
Adeline glanced at Desmond.
She noticed that although his face was expressionless, his fists were clenched tight.
Clearly, he was struggling to keep his emotions in check.
Just as she had expected, Desmond wasn't one of Benjamin's original people.
If he had been one of Benjamin's men, he wouldn't dare show her any attitude.
He had been hired from Orianto on a temporary basis.
And knowing Benjamin's nature, Adeline guessed that when Desmond arrived, all his
communication devices had likely been taken away so that he couldn't contact anyone outside.
Desmond had to be feeling trapped here, just like her.
Adeline thought there was a good chance he wanted to escape too but couldn't.
For the past few days, Adeline had been pretending to be angry and disappointed, barely eating, all in the hope of meeting Desmond without arousing suspicion from Benjamin.
When Jessica had told her about the chef who could cook Orianto food, she had already begun to plan this.
She couldn't guarantee that Desmond shared her feelings, but she couldn't give up on any opportunity.
"You're Desmond?" Adeline asked. "Did you even taste this chowder yourself? It's awful. How dare you serve this to me?"
Desmond really wanted to snap.
But seeing Jessica's warning look, he forced
himself to hold back.
"What's wrong with it?" he growled.
"I can't quite explain it," Adeline replied, "It's just bad."
Desmond was speechless.
He thought that Adeline was deliberately making things difficult for him.
He had even felt sympathy for her being stuck here.
"This is enough!" Desmond finally said, unable to hold it in anymore. "I quit. I want to go home. You treat me like a prisoner, confiscating my phone and humiliating me like this."
Hearing this, Adeline was even more certain of her guess.
Jessica frowned. "You can't leave now. I suggest you don't say anything like that in front of Benjamin. You don't want to anger him."
"But..." Desmond's hands were trembling in anger.
Back in Orianto, everyone praised his culinary skills. Some even hired him specifically to cook for them.
But now, here, he was being humiliated like this.
"You don't think I'm deliberately making things difficult for you, do you?" Adeline asked.
"Isn't that exactly what you're doing?" Desmond retorted.
"Well, you're mistaken. I just think it tastes terrible."
"If you think it's so bad, then why don't you make it yourself?" Desmond shot back.
"Let's see if you can make it taste any better."
Adeline's eyes lit up. "Oh, so you want a challenge, huh? Alright, I'll show you what I can do."
Desmond paused, taken aback.
He had just been venting his frustration, not expecting her to actually take him up on it.
Adeline stood up from the table.
"I've been holding back for days," she said.
"I've had enough. I'm going to show you
how good my chowder can be. Jessica, take us to the kitchen."
Jessica was frozen for a moment, but then she heard Desmond say, "Fine. I'm curious to see how you make chowder. Let's see if it's really as good as you think."
Without waiting for Jessica to lead the way, Desmond marched toward the kitchen.
Adeline followed behind him.
Jessica quickly followed too.
The kitchen wasn't very big.
Once the three of them entered, Adeline frowned. "Jessica, go stand by the door.
We're too cramped here. If you're in the way, we won't even be able to turn around."
"But..." Jessica hesitated, glancing at Desmond.
"What, are you worried he'll do something to me?" Adeline asked. "Don't worry. Just stand by the door. If he tries anything, I'll scream."
Hearing that, Desmond flared again.
"What are you talking about? I'm not going to do anything to you! I just want to see how you make chowder!" Desmond's face turned red with rage.
"I'm a married man. My wife is much more beautiful than you."
"Mm-hmm." Adeline nodded sincerely.
Desmond was speechless.
The three of them were indeed cramped in the kitchen, so Jessica finally stepped out.
Adeline confidently gathered a few ingredients from the fridge.
She knew how to make chowder, though she couldn't compare to a professional chef.
As she chopped the vegetables, Desmond couldn't help but snicker a few times.
Adeline pretended not to hear and continued with her work.
Once the ingredients were prepared, she heard footsteps approaching from outside the kitchen.
Then she heard Jessica talking to another maid, Natalia.
Jessica explained the situation and then asked Natalia to go upstairs and tell Benjamin what was going on.
Adeline's heart skipped a beat.
If Natalia told Benjamin, he might come down to see her cooking.
She heard footsteps again.
Natalia was probably heading upstairs.
Adeline quickly turned on the exhaust fan.
Benjamin had just received a text message from his secretary.
The secretary had already booked his flight back to Mugroaton for the evening.
He stared at the time on the message, his face darkening.
While Harrison and the Mendoza family had been searching for Adeline, they had been
disrupting the Tillman family's business operations.
And Benjamin's father was furious.
With Lance still missing, his father's anger only grew, and he had ordered Benjamin to return to Mugroaton immediately.
Benjamin had no choice but to book the flight.
It wasn't that he feared disobeying his father's orders, but in matters this serious, he couldn't afford to be defiant.
But if he went back to Mugroaton, he wouldn't be able to stay close to Adeline.
He wouldn't be able to see her every day anymore.
Benjamin rubbed his temples.
It didn't matter. The men he left behind here were loyal to him.
They would keep a close eye on Adeline for him.
She wouldn't be able to escape.
Once he handled his business, Benjamin would come back.
Just then, a knock on the door.
"Come in," Benjamin said.
As soon as he spoke, Natalia entered.
"Mr. Tillman, Miss Hensley scolded Desmond because she didn't like the chowder he made tonight."
"Oh," Benjamin replied indifferently.
Adeline had been in a bad mood lately, so he wasn't surprised by this.
