Chapter 354: Harrison, Don’t Be Sad
Harrison hesitated for a moment before speaking. "It's nothing. I guess it's just... with Christmas approaching, I suddenly started thinking about my dad."
He decided he'd wait until he figured everything• out before telling his family.
Myra chuckled softly. "I know. You were so close to your dad when you were little. You were always so affectionate with him, but you were never that close to me, probably because I was too strict with you, and your dad was the one who spoiled you."
Her voice carried a sense of nostalgia, and hearing it made Harrison's heart tighten.
"Mom, I'm going to sleep now. You should get some rest too," he said quietly.
"Go ahead. Sleep well," Myra replied.
After hanging up, Harrison headed to the bathroom for a quick shower.
When he was done, he realized he had forgotten to bring in his pajamas and fresh clothes.
But since he was alone in the room, he didn't think much of it. He simply walked out of the bathroom, still naked.
As he stepped out, he was startled to see Adeline sitting on the edge of the bed.
She heard the door open and instinctively turned her head to look.
The sight of him completely naked made her jump in surprise.
She quickly turned her head away, her face turning beet red. "What are you doing? Why aren't you wearing any clothes?" she stammered.
Even though they were a couple and had already been intimate, it was still new for Adeline. After all, it had only happened a couple of times, and she hadn't quite gotten used to it yet.
"I forgot to bring in my pajamas," Harrison said casually.
He quickly dressed, walked over, and sat next to her with a grin. "It's fine. We've already seen everything, haven't we?"
"Stop talking," Adeline muttered, her hand instinctively going to cover his mouth.
Harrison gently took her hand away, not saying another word.
Instead, he kissed her deeply.
After all this time, waiting until their relationship was official, he couldn't help but feel like no matter how much he kissed her, it was never enough.
He pulled her tightly into his arms, their breaths mingling as the air between them grew warmer.
They stayed like that for what felt like forever until their lips finally parted. But their fingers remained intertwined, locked together like they couldn't be separated.
Harrison cleared his throat, his voice hoarse.
"What are you doing here?"
"I just wanted to come check on you," Adeline replied softly.
She didn't want him to be alone, worrying about everything on his own.
knew he was probably feeling down, so she came to comfort him.
After all, his guest room was right next to hers, and Isaac's arrangement wasn't entirely without reason.
While Isaac had his principles about them not sharing a room, he was still a loving father. He understood the emotions of young people in love.
Harrison's heart softened at her words.
At that moment, he had no other thoughts.
He just wanted to hold her and stay with her in this peaceful silence.
He thought back to five years ago-how lucky he was that he decided to attend that interview and that he met Adeline.
That might have been the most fortunate thing to ever happen to him in this life.
They sat together, talking occasionally, enjoying the quiet companionship.
But soon, Adeline grew quiet. Harrison looked down to find her fast asleep, her head resting on his chest.
He smiled softly to himself, feeling helpless.
Gently, he lifted her in his arms, intending to take her back to her room.
But as soon as he lifted her, she woke up.
Her head rubbed against his chest as she mumbled sleepily, "How did I fall asleep?"
"It's really late," Harrison replied. "Let me take you back to your room."
"Okay."
He carried her back to her room and set her gently on the bed.
Just as he was about to leave, Adeline reached out and took his hand, her voice muffled by drowsiness. "Harrison, don't be sad."
His heart clenched, and his eyes stung with unexpected emotion.
He bent down and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. "Mm, goodnight."
The next morning, Adeline told Joyce that she had some matters to attend to and wouldn't be able to go out with her for now.
Joyce, unfazed, smiled and teased, "Don't worry. I won't disturb you and Mr. Thomson's 'romantic world! I'll just sneakily complain behind your back about how you've abandoned your best friend for a guy."
"You already complained to my face, not behind my back," Adeline quipped.
"Really? Well, I'll just complain behind your back a few more times then," Joyce laughed.
The two of them joked around for a while, and after breakfast, Adeline left with Harrison.
Sitting in the car, Adeline kept holding Harrison's hand.
Though his expression was calm, she could feel his hand stiffening in hers.
Her heart fluttered with concern.
Harrison was usually so composed, but this time was different.
This matter was far from simple.
Even someone as calm as Harrison might find it hard to stay collected.
Before long, the car stopped at an intersection.
Harrison and Adeline stepped out and, hand in hand, walked down the street.
Soon, they arrived at a small, white two-story house.
This was the home of the man named Elliot.
Today just happened to be his day off, so instead of going to his workplace, they decided to visit his home.
They didn't plan on making a scene.
Harrison just wanted one last look at the man, to see if Elliot was his father.
If Elliot had no connection to him and was simply someone who happened to resemble his father, then they would leave quietly.
As they approached the gate, they heard the sound of a little girl laughing, followed by the deep voice of a man.
"Dad, throw me the ball!"
“Okay, catch it!"
It sounded like father and daughter were playing catch in the yard.
Harrison suddenly stopped in his tracks, and Adeline followed suit, turning to look at him.
The sounds of laughter and talking from the yard continued, but Harrison remained still, deep in thought.
After a moment, he sighed. "Let's go. We shouldn't stay here."
Adeline could almost guess what was going through his mind.
He backed out.
Even if that was his father, it seemed that his father had a happy family now, living a peaceful and content life.
If Harrison showed up now, he would disrupt their happiness.
The two turned to leave, but Harrison paused again after taking a few steps.
Adeline looked at him, noticing the conflict and guilt etched on his face.
He thought about his grandfather and mother.
If he just walked away now, would they never know the truth? Would their years of pain and longing be meaningless? And what about him? What would his life mean?
Just then, they heard the sound of the ball bouncing off the yard gate.
"Papa, the ball went outside!" the girl said.
"Alright, I'll go get it."
The gate creaked open, and instinctively, Harrison and Adeline turned to look.
Then, Elliot appeared, holding the ball.
When he saw them standing there, his expression changed.
"Hello, can I help you?" he asked politely, speaking in the language of Yewhaina.
But as soon as his gaze locked on Harrison's face, he froze.
For a moment, he just stared at Harrison, examining him closely.
After a few seconds, his eyes widened in shock, and the ball slipped from his hands, bouncing once before hitting the ground.
