Chapter 357: Don’t Look Down On Me
When Harrison was young, Edward had always been a loving father.
But occasionally, when Harrison made a mistake, Edward would put on a stern face and scold him.
At that time, Harrison had been terrified of him.
But now, Edward suddenly realized that he was afraid of his own son.
His son had truly grown up. Even in moments like this, there was an aura around him that commanded fear, one that even Edward found intimidating.
After Harrison's angry shout, Edward no longek dared to approach.
He could only say, "Harrison, no matter what happened, I'm still your father."
Only now did he realize it. Back then, when he faked his death and ran away with another woman, how come he never acknowledged the fact that he was a father?
Harrison wanted to scoff, but he didn't even have the strength to curl his lips into a smile.
He didn't say a word, simply leaving with Adeline.
Edward watched their backs, his heart heavy with both sadness and worry.
"Honey, what should we do now?" Britney asked him, looking both worried and uncertain. "I didn't expect him to be so rude to you. What should Alondra and I do if he tells the others in the Thomson family and they send someone to drag you back?"
This was also Edward's fear.
If Lorenzo found out he was still alive, Lorenzo would definitely send people to capture him and bring him back.
But what would happen to Britney and Alondra?
Alondra would be fine. Being Lorenzo's biological granddaughter, she could probably stay with the Thomson family.
But Lorenzo would never accept Britney.
It was unbelievable. After living
peacefully here for ten years, they were still discovered.
"We should leave," Edward said, his voice low but firm. "Pack the essentials, but don't take too much. We'll take Alondra and leave."
"Are we really leaving?" Britney asked, shocked.
"We've been living here for ten years, and we've gotten so used to it. Alondra might have trouble adjusting to the new surroundings. And your job... Everything's been going so well."
"Do you want to watch me get dragged back to the Thomson family and have to part from you?"
Edward asked, his voice pained.
At those words, Britney had no choice but to begin packing.
Once outside the yard, Harrison still couldn't calm his emotions.
"Adeline, what should I do?" he murmured.
"Should I tell Grandpa and Mom? What will they think when they find out? How will they react?"
His brows furrowed deeply, his mind a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts.
Adeline gently smoothed the furrows from his brow, her heart aching for him.
She didn't have an answer for him.
If Harrison didn't know what to do, how could she?
Harrison looked back at the house, a sad sigh escaping him. "I think they'll probably leave secretly. The Thomson family must feel like a storm cloud to him now. How did it come to this, Adeline? His father, his wife, his son... what do they mean to him? How could he be so heartless?"
Harrison thought about Myra, and how she had never agreed to him being with Adeline.
But he had never considered giving up on either of them.
He had only wanted to ease the tension between them, to make sure Adeline wasn't hurt and Myra wasn't angry.
But why, in Edward's eyes, was it so easy to give up on his own family?
Harrison thought, "And why did he have to go to such cruel lengths to do it? He could have just eloped with Britney in secret. Oh, but if that had happened, the Thomson family would have hunted him down for sure.
So, he came up with the fake-death scheme to sever all ties and prevent future troubles."
Adeline embraced him tightly, her heart aching at the thought of his pain.
"How about we go rest in the car for a while?" she suggested softly. "You look awful."
Harrison did feel exhausted.
After such an emotional upheaval, it was no wonder he felt drained.
They returned to the car, and Adeline gently guided Harrison to rest his head on her shoulder.
A while later, Harrison suddenly spoke up, his voice quiet but resolute. "Adeline... let's keep an eye on them."
Adeline understood. He didn't want Edward and Britney to escape.
"Okay."
"Actually, l've been thinking that maybe I should just let it go... Just pretend he is dead and I never saw him," Harrison said, his voice filled with conflict. "But when I think about it, I can't. I can't just let it slide."
He couldn't bring himself to be that magnanimous.
Just the thought of the pain his family had suffered and remembering all the things Edward had done, Harrison felt his heart ache.
He still didn't know what to do.
But he couldn't allow Edward to disappear from his world again.
"Don't worry," Adeline said, her voice calm and steady. "With the Mendoza family's backing, they can't run far. Yewhaina will be their anchor."
"Yes," Harrison murmured tiredly, closing his eyes.
At that moment, memories from his childhood with Edward began to surface in his mind.
When he was younger, Edward had been so kind to him, making time to spend with him even though his work was busy.
Edward had always said he didn't want Harrison to grow up without a father's love.
And then, he faked his death, disappearing from Harrison's childhood.
Harrison's thoughts drifted to Myra.
Edward and Myra's marriage had been a business arrangement, but it was Edward who had chosen to marry her.
Lorenzo had pressured him, but not to the extent that he was forced into marrying anyone in particular.
Edward had wanted a refined lady to be his wife, so he had picked Myra. After meeting her a few times, he had proposed to Myra, and the Terrell family had agreed.
And then they got married and had a son-and suddenly, Edward met what he called "true love."
It was so laughable.
And after they were married, Myra had been truly devoted to Edward.
Every time he went out, no matter how late, Myra would leave a light on for him. When he came home, she'd make him a bowl of soup to ease his hangover.
When he was sick, she cared for him, never leaving his side.
No matter what Edward wanted to eat, Myra would learn to cook it for him.
But Edward had never truly felt his responsibility as a husband.
"Do you want to go back?" Adeline asked softly, her voice gentle. "I think you need to rest properly."
Harrison nodded.
Adeline signaled the driver to start the car.
As the car drove, Harrison suddenly spoke again, his voice a little dejected, "Adeline... I'm not like him. Don't look down on me."
Hearing the vulnerability in his voice, Adeline felt a pang of sorrow. She wanted to smile, but her heart ached too much.
"How could I ever look down on you?" she said, her voice soft and reassuring.
