Chapter 355: I’m Sorry
Edward's reaction was already telling enough.
Harrison stood there, staring at him. As the two locked eyes, they lost in their own thoughts.
It took a while, but finally, it was Edward who spoke first.
"Harrison... is it really you?"
The moment Harrison heard his name, Harrison's mind buzzed with a deafening roar.
It was indeed Edward, his father.
His father hadn't died. He was alive.
Not only had he survived, but he also
remembered Harrison, and recognized the grown man standing in front of him.
Harrison stepped forward, his eyes burning red with emotion.
Edward was trembling from head to toe. He never imagined, after all these years, that his son would suddenly appear at his doorstep.
His son had grown up. He was now a
young man-just as Edward had always imagined, tall and handsome.
Edward was overwhelmed with emotion, wanting to rush over and embrace his son, to ask how the last decade had been. But he didn't dare. He felt he had no right to do that. He was too ashamed.
He had abandoned his son and had no face to approach him now.
He knew that he shouldn't have shown this reaction. He should have pretended not to recognizé Harrison. He should have treated him like a stranger.
But, at that moment, he couldn't control himself.
Harrison, whom he hadn't seen in over a decade, was standing right in front of him.
How could he have stayed calm?
"Dad... is it really you?" Harrison's voice trembled as he spoke, calling out "Dad" just like he used to when he was little.
Edward's tears started to flow.
"Harrison, I'm so sorry. It's my fault..." he muttered, his voice cracking with guilt.
By now, Harrison was completely unraveling.
"Dad, you're alive! You're really alive! I can't believe it..." Harrison's face broke into an
expression of pure joy.
But soon, his expression shifted, and his eyes burned with anger. "Then why didn't you come home? What happened with that explosion? Why didn't you tell us you were alive? Do you have any idea... Do you have any idea how we've all been suffering? Me, Mom, Grandpa..."
He couldn't continue.
His voice, though not yet breaking into tears, was thick with emotion, choked by years of repressed grief and fury.
Adeline, watching quietly from the side, couldn't help but feel her eyes well up too.
Even though she wasn't the one experiencing the whirlwind of joy, confusion, and anger that Harrison was going through, she could feel every ounce of emotion he was struggling with.
It was as though he was on the edge of breaking down.
Meanwhile, Edward just kept repeating the words "I'm sorry" over and over, unable to say anything else.
Just then, they heard a high-pitched, clear voice of a little girl. "Daddy, what's wrong? Why are you crying?"
The little girl ran over to Edward's side and clung to his arm. Then she turned to Harrison, baring her teeth in a defiant growl.
"Did you hurt my daddy? Bad person!"
"Alondra, no... Don't say that." Edward
quickly wiped his face, trying to calm the situation. "He's not a bad person. He's... he's your brother."
"Brother?" The little girl stared at Edward, confused. "Why do I have a brother? You never told me about a brother before."
Edward was left speechless, unsure of how to respond.
"Alondra, go back inside and find Mommy,
Okay?" he said gently.
"No!" Alondra shook her head stubbornly.
"You're crying. I'm staying with you."
Harrison watched Alondra, and suddenly, a realization hit him hard. His father-alive and well -had been hiding the truth from everyone, leading them all to believe he was dead.
Meanwhile, he had married someone else and had another child.
Edward had a happy life now, with a family of his own.
But what about the Thomson family?
Sure, they were all doing well now. But those years of sorrow and despair had been unbearable.
Edward had lied to them all. He'd deceived his own father, his first wife, and his son.
As this realization settled in, they heard a woman's voice calling from inside the house.
"Sweetheart, what happened? Why are you all out here?"
And then, a woman stepped out of the house.
She appeared to be in her early forties, but her beauty was still evident, even though time had passed.
She was Britney Terry, Edward's wife.
As soon as Britney saw Harrison, her expression shifted abruptly.
She recognized him instantly-faster than
Edward had.
Edward, out of guilt, had avoided keeping up with the Thomson family's affairs. He'd searched for Harrison's photo once, about seven or eight years ago, but he hadn't looked again since.
But Britney had no such hesitation. She'd made it a point to keep tabs on the Thomson family, searching for Harrison's photos online. So when she saw him, she knew exactly who he was.
Harrison had come to find them.
What were they going to do now?
If Harrison told the Thomson family that Edward was alive, they might come and take him away.
What would become of her and Alondra?
Truth be told, Britney had always dreamed of being a wealthy woman in the Thomson family.
But she feared that if they found out that Edward was alive, they might take him back, leaving her and Alondra behind.
Her first reaction was to tell Edward to calm down, to act as though he wasn't Edward, and to pretend like he didn't recognize Harrison.
But seeing the tears streaming down Edward's face, she knew it was too late. It was clear that Edward had already been recognized by his son.
After all, Harrison was his biological son.
How could he not feel the pull? After all these years, even though he had run off with Britney, the one thing Edward had always held onto was the thought of his son. Every night, when he lay in bed, he would call out Harrison's name in his dreams.
But Britney had never cared for Edward's so-called "fatherly love." If Edward truly cared about his son, he wouldn't have abandoned his wife and child all those years ago.
After thinking it over, Britney finally said, "Since you're here, come in. We can talk inside. Take your time."
She waved at Alondra, calling her over. "Alondra, come to me."
Alondra glanced from Edward to Britney, hesitating.
Edward took a deep breath and turned to Harrison. "Harrison, come inside... Let's talk."
Harrison's fists were clenched tightly.
He stood there, glaring at Edward, his body rigid, silent. He didn't move.
It was Adeline who stepped forward, gently placing a hand on his, urging him to relax and release the tension.
"It's alright," she said softly. "Do you want to go inside and talk to them? If you don't want to, we can leave now."
With Adeline by his side, Harrison's heart calmed just a little.
He took a deep breath, his voice steady but filled with determination. "I want to go in."
He needed to hear what Edward had to say.
And honestly, he couldn't just walk away.
After so many years of longing, wondering, and pain, he couldn't let this moment slip by.
The anger was real, so was the joy and excitement.
