Chapter 371: Enter the Thomson Family
Edward longed to return to the Thomson family, to see his father and his siblings, and to find out what they were like now.
He wanted to visit the Thomson villa where he'd grown up and see if anything had changed.
But he didn't dare...
After everything he had done, how could he possibly face his family again? How could he show his face after all of that?
"This is great!" Britney exclaimed, her eyes shining. "If she's going to divorce you, does that mean you can bring me and Alondra into the Thomson family? Can I finally become Mrs. Thomson?"
Edward gave her a long, weary look.
"You wish. Things aren't that simple."
"Well, I did give you a daughter," Britney countered. "And now that Myra's ready to divorce you, your father has no reason to keep me out of the Thomson family. After all, you're his son. We'll beg him on our knees with Alondra. He won't turn us away, right?"
Edward knew she had a point, but still, something felt off in his gut.
"Let's get back to Orianto first... By the way, where's Alondra?"
"I sent her to find Harrison. She hasn't come back yet."
Edward frowned. "Why did you send her to Harrison?"
"What else? You've been gone so long, and I got anxious. I thought Alondra, being his sister, might get some sympathy from him. I taught her exactly what to say."
"You..." Edward shook his head helplessly.
"Alondra's still so young. Even if you taught her, do you really think she'll be able to act perfectly in front of Harrison? He's too sharp, and he'll see right through her."
"I know, but so what? Alondra's adorable, and I just don't believe Harrison won't like her."
It was uncertain whether Harrison liked Alondra or not, but Adeline really did have a soft spot for the little girl.
After some cake, Alondra seemed in much better spirits, smiling sweetly and feeding Adeline some snacks.
This time, Alondra was entirely different from the nervous little girl she had been earlier-her joy seemed completely genuine.
Adeline was truly fond of her.
She'd always wished she had a sister when she was younger.
Then she did get one, but it was Millie...
Now, Harrison's sister could be her sister, too.
But the situation was a little awkward.
Adeline could not resist. After all, the girl was just too cute.
After finishing her snacks, Alondra remembered the words her mother had taught her.
She still wasn't brave enough to speak to Harrison directly, but she was already quite comfortable with Adeline.
So, she tugged at Adeline's sleeve and whispered in her ear, "Adeline, my mom says she wants to bring me into the Thomson family. Where is the Thomson family? Do you think my brother will agree to let us in?"
Adeline frowned slightly, not because of Alondra, but because of Britney.
Britney dared have the guts to have her young daughter ask for something like this.
"Alondra, this is a grown-up business. You don't need to worry about it, Okay?" Adeline said gently, soothing her. "We'll talk to your mom about it."
"But..."
Alondra glanced again at Harrison.
Adeline gave him a meaningful look, signaling him to say something.
Harrison finally spoke, his voice calm. "Don't worry. I'll talk to your mom. You can count on that."
Alondra beamed at his words, her face lighting up with joy. "Thank you, Harrison!"
Alondra's address of him seemed to stir something in Harrison.
"I'll walk you back to your mom now," Adeline said.
"Okay. Thank you."
Adeline truly liked this little girl.
She escorted Alondra back to the room where Edward and Britney were.
As soon as Alondra entered, Britney quickly pulled her in and asked, "How did it go?"
"Mom, Alondra and Adeline were so nice to me!" Alondra said happily. "They gave me cake and all sorts of yummy treats!"
Britney shot her a sharp look. "Who cares about that? Did you say what I told you to say?"
Alondra thought for a moment and then replied "I told them! Harrison and Adeline promised me they'd talk to you about it."
When she heard this, Britney's heart soared with hope.
But just a few seconds later, she felt a crushing disappointment.
"What do you mean by 'talk to me about it'?" Britney snapped, her voice rising in anger.
"Talking's not enough! I want to enter the Thomson family! I want to enter the Thomson family!"
Alondra froze, scared by her mother's outburst.
"Mom.. did I say something wrong?"
Edward quickly pulled Alondra into his arms, soothing her, before turning to Britney with a reproachful look. "What's with you? Why are you taking it out on the child? If you really want to join the Thomson family, go talk to Harrison yourself."
Britney's eyes flickered.
She was afraid of Harrison.
If she dared speak to him, she wouldn't have sent Alondra in the first place.
But right now, she was desperate to get into the Thomson family.
Before meeting Edward, her life in Mugroaton had been tough.
Britney had crossed the border into Mugroaton with her father when she was just a teenager.
Not long after they arrived, her father died from illness.
Alone in a foreign land, an illegal immigrant, she'd endured a lot of hardship.
Even now, sometimes at night, she'd wake up sweating, haunted by those dark memories.
She'd met Edward while selling trinkets outside a tourist spot in Mugroaton.
At the time, she was young and weary, but she couldn't manage to hide her beauty.
Edward had fallen for her at first sight.
That very night, they went to a hotel.
Back then, she didn't fall for him right away.
But she saw Edward was wealthy.
So, she saw him as her ticket out of the misery.
Edward had told her he was married.
She didn't care.
As long as he could help her escape the hell she was living in, being the other woman didn't matter.
Later, when Edward went back to Orianto for a while, he returned to Mugroaton and told her that divorcing his wife would be complicated, He didn't want to return to the Thomson family, so he planned to fake his death.
At first, she'd been disappointed, hoping to become a rich woman in the Thomson family.
But she realized that if Edward faked his death and ran away with her, he would prepare a lot of money for it.
At least she'd have someone to rely on.
So, she agreed.
After they ran away together, she indeed lived a much better life than before.
They weren't incredibly wealthy, but at least they never went hungry.
But deep down, Britney still dreamed of joining the Thomson family.
She feared that if she didn't act soon, the family might take Edward away and shut her out forever.
Britney was once willing to run away with Edward, but these past few days, she's been al over the place emotionally, terrified that both she and her daughter might be left behind.
But now, since Myra was ready to divorce Edward, Britney thought she could finally take her rightful place as Mrs. Thomson.
