Chapter 283: Make You Happy
In the magazine's work group chat, everyone was buzzing about Conrad's situation, even late at night.
Joyce was also awake, checking the chat and scrolling through videos.
Just then, her phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number, with no contact name saved.
Given the hour, the only people still awake and chatting were her colleagues, so she assumed it was one of them calling and picked up.
"Hello?"
The person on the other end stayed silent for a while.
Joyce could only hear heavy breathing.
She frowned, suddenly realizing something, and asked in a low voice, "Callan?"
"Joyce, it's me..." Callan finally spoke. "I've owed you an apology all this time. I'm sorry."
"Do you think an apology makes it all better?"
Joyce scoffed. "If someone injured you and then apologized, would you forgive them easily?"
"I'm sorry," Callan said. " I acted on impulse that day. Joyce, you know, I never meant to hurt you."
"Saying this now is pointless. Let's not be in touch anymore. Just hearing your voice makes me sick!"
With that, Joyce was ready to hang up.
But suddenly, Callan said in a cold tone, "Are you reacting like this because I almost hurt you last time, or because I had someone hurt Sam?"
"Both! I won't forgive you for either!" Joyce shouted angrily. "You never consider anyone else's feelings. You're nothing but a selfish jerk! I only regret not seeing your true colors sooner!"
What she regretted most now was ever becoming friends with Callan.
If she could, she wished she had never known him.
Callan's kind of "love" did nothing but disgust
After she said this, Callan suddenly let out a
sinister laugh.
"Joyce, I know you hate me right now," he said in an unsettling tone. "So I'll just have to do something to make you happy."
Joyce's heart skipped a beat.
"Callan, what are you planning to do?"
Just then, she heard a man's scream on the other end of the line.
Joyce froze.
The man's voice sounded familiar.
"Joyce, I know this man hurt you in the past, so I'm getting revenge on your behalf," Callan said.
"Joyce, help me!" the man screamed again.
This time, Joyce recognized the voice.
It was her ex-boyfriend.
"Callan, are you insane?" Joyce yelled.
"What are you doing with Archie? Let him go!"
Callan said, "Joyce, I know he did you wrong in the past, so now I'm punishing him for you!"
Joyce was genuinely terrified.
She was sick of Archie, but ever since Sam had taught him a lesson, Archie hadn't shown up again.
All she wanted was for Archie to stay out of her life for good.
But now that he was in Callan's hands, Archie would be in trouble.
It wasn't that she cared about Archie. She often joked about wanting cheaters to drop dead, but if Callan actually killed Archie, she needed to be responsible for that.
She didn't want to spend the rest of her life haunted by this.
Callan had known about her ex-boyfriend before, but he never cared.
Now Callan had completely lost his mind.
"Callan, when did I ever say I wanted him punished? And what does any of this have to do with you? Let him go right now!"
"Joyce, what can I do to make you happy?" Callan's voice turned despondent. "Sam helped you teach him a lesson, didn't he? You must have appreciated that. Maybe that's why you liked him, right? So why is it different when I'm doing the same thing?"
Joyce wanted to scream.
These two situations weren't the same.
Sam had only driven Archie away, which was exactly what she needed.
Sam wasn't a deranged person like Callan!
Joyce took a deep breath.
She knew reasoning with Callan was pointless right now.
She said, "Callan, calm down. I know what's bothering you. So, let me make it clear. I don't have feelings for Sam anymore. I've seen him for what he is. He's just a spoiled rich kid with nothing special about him."
As she spoke, Joyce silently apologized to Sam in her heart.
She didn't want to say that about Sam.
But with Callan acting so unhinged, he'd definitely do something even crazier if she didn't say something like this.
"Are you serious?" Callan asked excitedly.
But then he added, "You're just trying to placate me, aren't you? Didn't you like him so much? How could that change all of a sudden?"
Joyce sneered. "I did like him, but it's not like I was head over heels, Okay? Love comes and goes quickly. Besides, he doesn't even like me, so why should I care? This is my feeling for him. Take it or leave it. And by the way, I couldn't care less what you do to Archie. Torture him or kill him-none of it will bring me the slightest joy. Actually, if you go so far as to kill him, I'll just think even less of you."
Callan was silent for a moment.
Then Joyce heard him say, "Let him go." Joyce finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Joyce, can we still be friends? I'd like to see you."
Joyce swallowed her disgust and said, "Let's talk later. I'm tired and need to sleep now."
With that, she hung up.
After a while, she found Archie's number and called him.
As soon as Archie answered, he said, "Joyce!
What the hell's your problem? I haven't done anything to you lately!"
His voice was slightly trembling.
"You're out?" Joyce asked.
"Yeah, I have no idea where I am now, just trying to catch a cab."
"Good."
Archie, having calmed down, softened his tone.
As much of a jerk as he was, he knew Joyce must have been the one who got Callan to let him go.
"Joyce, who was that guy? He's nuts!"
"Mind your own business," Joyce said.
"Remember, keep this incident to yourself, or you might get into more trouble."
"I got it," Archie said nervously.
Joyce had nothing more to say to this scumbag.
Knowing he was safe, she ended the call.
Lying in bed, she was filled with unease.
