Chapter 287: You’re Mr. Thomson’s Girlfriend
Jamarion had taken quite a loss this time, so he certainly didn't want Callan stirring up more trouble.
While he would prevent Callan from approaching Joyce again, he probably wouldn't intervene if Callan targeted others who weren't as important.
"TIl talk with her tonight when we meet," Adeline said.
Since Joyce hadn't disclosed much over the phone, it Firely wasn't an urgent issue.
Worrying now wouldn't be of much help.
Harrison knew how close Adeline and Joyce were So, he didn't mind too much that he wouldn t get to have dinner with her that evening.
"Tell Miss Monroe not to worry too much,"
Harrison said. "If there's anything she needs, she can always come to me. Since she's your friend, her problems are mine too."
Adeline smiled wryly and shook her head. "I appreciate it, but I know Joyce. She doesn't like to trouble people unless she has to."
That evening, Adeline arrived at the barbecue restaurant where Joyce had invited her.
The meat sizzled on the grill, filling the air with a tempting aroma.
Normally, Joyce would be eagerly reaching for it, but tonight she was unusually quiet, staring at her dipping sauce as if deep in thought, while the meat was cooked to perfection.
"Joyce, what's going on?" Adeline asked.
Adeline placed a few pieces of meat on her plate, watching Joyce with concern.
"Adeline, I quit my job today," Joyce said.
Adeline was shocked and quickly asked, "Why the sudden decision? Didn't you love that job?"
"I did, but I've been thinking a lot lately, and I've decided to leave this city and move somewhere new."
Hearing this, Adeline grew more anxious.
"Are you serious about leaving? What happened?" Adeline asked, alarmed. "Is this because of Callan?"
Joyce gave a bitter smile and said, "Callan called me the other night. Do you know what he did? He actually kidnapped my ex-boyfriend."
Adeline frowned. "Archie? Has Callan lost his mind? Why would he kidnap Archie?"
"He's always been insane. He kidnapped Archie out of the blue, saying it was to 'stand up for me.'"
Joyce winced as she recalled that night.
"If I hadn't calmed him down on the phone, he might ve actually killed Archie. Adeline, you know he's nothing but a complete lunatic," Joyce said.
"I feel like if I don't do something, he might hurt more people around me."
"Is that why you're leaving?" Adeline asked, concerned.
"Yes, his obsession is all because of me. If I leave, maybe he'll calm down. At the very least, he'll focus his energy on finding me instead of harming others."
"But what if he finds you?" Adeline asked.
"I'm afraid he might hurt you."
"Don't worry. I'll make sure to stay hidden," Joyce replied. "Once I'm settled, I'll get in touch with you and my parents. No one else will know where I am."
After a pause, she added, "Honestly, there's another reason too. I've wanted to explore beyond this city for a while. I've spent my life here since I was a child. I've always wondered what the rest of the world is like.
And with everything that's happened recently, I just want to get away from certain people."
"If getting out of the city will help you feel better, then maybe some time away is exactly what you need," Adeline said. "But I'll miss you, and I'm a bit worried."
"Once I'm settled, I'll call you right away," Joyce said with a smile. "My parents won't be happy about me leaving. I'm afraid they'll be upset once I'm gone. Adeline, could you check on them for me from time to time?"
"Of course, your family's like my own," Adeline replied. "If there's anything else you need, just say the word."
"Well, naturally. When have I ever been shy
about asking for help?"
They both laughed.
Joyce finally started to eat.
Once they finished their meal, Adeline asked,
"When are you going to leave?"
"I've booked a flight for tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? That soon?" Adeline was taken aback. "Why the rush?"
"Now that l've decided, and I've already handed off my work, it's best to leave quickly. No point in delaying," Joyce explained. "Oh, could I stay at your place tonight? I keep feeling like Callan is watching me. I'd rather head to the airport from your place than risk him stopping me."
"Of course," Adeline nodded. "Stay at my place tonight, and I'll take you to the airport in the morning."
After leaving the restaurant, they headed to Adeline's place together.
On the way back, Adeline contacted Georgia to ask her to keep an eye out.
Sure enough, Georgia spotted a few people following them.
They seemed to be Callan's people.
Adeline asked Georgia to handle it.
Georgia acted swiftly.
In no time, she had driven them all away.
"Thanks a lot, Georgia," Adeline said on the phone. "I'll treat you to dinner soon."
"It's alright," Georgia replied, still her usual no-nonsense self. "Since you're Mr.
Thomson's girlfriend, it's my duty to protect you."
Adeline hadn't expected her to say that.
"I'm not... I'm not his girlfriend yet."
"What? Really?" Georgia sounded genuinely confused.
"Well... no, not exactly."
She and Harrison were still in a flirtatious relationship.
They hadn't officially defined their relationship.
So technically, she wasn't Harrison's girlfriend, Georgia didn't seem fazed and replied, "Alright. Either way, you'll be Mr. Thomson's girlfriend sooner or later."
Adeline was speechless.
If she didn't know Georgia's personality, she'd have thought Georgia was teasing her.
But Georgia was someone Adeline understood well.
She knew that Georgia was simply stating her honest opinion.
