Chapter 284: Get Used to Injuries
Joyce could sense that Callan was becoming more and more unhinged.
She didn't know what he might do next.
Even though Joyce had Adeline and Harrison backing her, she couldn't keep relying on them.
Plus, what she feared most was that the people she knew might get targeted by Callan because of her.
Joyce had a plan.
A few days passed. Halle unexpectedly received a call from Adeline.
Ever since she took Adeline's call, she'd been on edge.
Just then, Eleanor came down the stairs.
"Heat me up a glass of milk," Eleanor said.
Halle was so lost in thought that she didn't hear Eleanor's request.
Eleanor immediately grabbed a magazine and threw it at her.
"I told you to heat me up some milk! Didn't you hear me?"
The magazine hit Halle, snapping her back to reality.
Halle said, "I... I'm sorry. I'll do it right away."
Halle, feeling Eleanor's murderous glare, went to the kitchen and carefully warmed up a glass of milk.
As soon as Eleanor touched the glass, she pulled her hand back and then flipped the tray Halle was holding.
"It's scalding hot. Are you trying to kill me?"
The milk spilled, some of it splashing onto Halle's hand.
Her hand turned red from the burn immediately.
But she could only endure the pain and say, "I'm sorry, Miss Fraser. It's my fault."
"Then make another!"
Halle's hand stung, but she ignored it, rushing back to the kitchen to prepare a glass at the right temperature.
Eleanor took the milk upstairs.
Only then did Halle go back to her room, where she took out a tube of ointment and applied it to her hand.
Working for Eleanor, she often suffered injuries like this.
She'd gotten used to keeping all sorts of medication on hand.
As she applied the ointment, tears started streaming down her face.
She wondered when this life ever ended.
She remembered Adeline's phone call earlier.
If she chose to rely on Adeline, Eleanor would definitely come after her.
Maybe she'd even send those foreigners to kill her.
But then again, Adeline had Harrison behind her.
Harrison certainly wouldn't be intimidated by those people.
Halle was so tired of being Eleanor's servant.
This life was unlivable.
Staring at the burn on her hand, Halle took a deep breath, picked up her phone, found Adeline's number in her call log, and made the phone call.
An hour later, Halle secretly arrived outside Eleanor's room on the second floor.
She slowly opened the door.
The room was dark, with no light from any phone or other device, and Eleanor didn't yell at her.
It seemed she was already asleep.
Halle let out a sigh of relief, gently closed the door, and quickly left the house.
She went to the street and flagged down a taxi.
Forty minutes later, the taxi stopped in front of a bar.
She went inside and saw Adeline already seated at a table, waiting for her.
Taking a deep breath, Halle walked over.
"Miss Hensley."
Adeline looked up with a smile and stood up.
"You're here. Please have a seat."
Halle nodded and sat down across from Adeline.
Adeline sat back down as well, saying, "I'm glad you decided to meet with me today, Miss Slater."
Halle froze for a moment.
"Would you like something to drink?" Adeline asked.
Adeline noticed Halle staring blankly at her.
"Is something wrong?" she asked.
Halle snapped out of it, giving a bitter smile.
"Nothing... It's just been a long time since anyone's called me that."
Eleanor usually called her "useless,"
"idiot," or "worthless."
Whenever they went out together, Eleanor never introduced her by name.
Everyone simply knew her as Eleanor's assistant.
Nobody knew or cared that her name was
actually Halle Slater.
"I'll just have some juice," Halle said.
Adeline ordered two glasses of juice.
When the server brought the drinks, Halle wrapped her hands around her glass.
Adeline noticed traces of ointment on Halle's hand.
Her hand was still red, and Adeline knew it must have been a burn.
Adeline frowned slightly.
"Miss Slater, is your hand alright?" Adeline asked.
Halle looked down at her hand and gave a bitter smile. "It's fine. I'm used to these small injuries."
"Did Eleanor do that?" Adeline asked.
Halle's eyes reddened, and she nodded.
She gave a sad smile. "On screen, Eleanor seems gentle and charming, but her real temper is awful. When she's angry; she takes it out on me. And even when she's not, she seems to enjoy tormenting me. To her, I'm not a person but a tool to work for her and to vent her frustration on."
Adeline looked at her sympathetically.
Though she barely knew Halle, Adeline could tell Halle had finally found someone she could open up to.
"Miss Hensley, you're probably wondering why I don't just quit, aren't you?" Halle asked.
"I can guess," Adeline replied. "If she wanted to, she could use countless ways to make things. difficult for you, so you're scared to leave."
"Yes..." Halle said with a mix of helplessness and sadness. "I'm just an ordinary person. What can I do to fight her? I can only stay by her side and bear it. But I don't know when this will ever end."
Finally, Halle had found someone to confide in.
Even though she and Adeline barely knew each other, Halle couldn't hold back.
Adeline sighed.
She'd seen Halle a few times before.
From her state, Adeline could tell she hadn't been living well and suspected she didn't see eye to eye with Eleanor.
But she hadn't realized Halle's life was even harder than she'd imagined.
"Miss Hensley, I know why you reached out to me today," Halle said. "But I'm afraid of Eleanor. Can you... can you protect me? Can I trust you?"
Her eyes were filled with hope.
Adeline nodded. "You don't have to worry. I wouldn't have arranged this meeting if I couldn't keep you safe. If you decide to work with me, I promise Eleanor won't be able to harm you or anyone you care about."
Halle still hesitated a bit.
After all, this was the first real conversation she and Adeline had shared.
Complaining to Adeline about the mistreatment she endured was one thing.
But Halle was still afraid to reveal all of Eleanor’s secrets.
