Chapter 286: Be Closer to Her
Halle knew exactly what Eleanor intended to do.
But she intentionally put on a confused expression.
"Miss Fraser, why do you need my phone?" Halle asked.
Eleanor responded coldly, "Just give it to me. No questions."
"I'd rather not. There's private stuff on there," Halle replied hesitantly.
Her reluctance only made Eleanor more suspicious. She slapped Halle across the face without hesitation.
"Hand it over! Don't make me ask again!"
Reluctantly, Halle handed over her phone, feeling wronged.
Eleanor took it and inspected every corner meticulously.
She even checked all the trash folders.
But she found nothing suspicious.
Eleanor wondered if she was overthinking.
Eleanor didn't bother to feel guilty. To her, Halle was just someone to take her anger out on.
Whether or not she had misjudged Halle didn't matter in the slightest.
She threw the phone back to Halle, snapping, "Why are you standing there? Go make me something to eat! Trying to starve me or what?"
"What would you like?" Halle asked softly.
"Anything, as long as it's not too greasy. I'm watching my weight," Eleanor said dismissively before sitting down with her phone.
Taking a deep breath, Halle went to the kitchen.
This kind of thing had happened countless times before.
She would work hard to make a midnight snack, but if it was light, Eleanor would complain it was bland. If it had flavor, Eleanor would gripe about gaining weight.
Every time, Halle would get a scolding.
Halle had gotten used to it by now.
In the kitchen, she finally settled on preparing a small pizza for Eleanor.
When she placed the pizza in front of Eleanor, she was fully prepared for the lecture.
To her surprise, Eleanor smiled at her and said gently, "Thanks for the trouble."
Halle froze, unable to control her expression, staring at Eleanor in shock.
But Eleanor simply ate the pizza as if nothing had happened.
Halle said, "Miss Fraser, if there's nothing else, I'll head back to my room."
"Sure, go rest up."
Eleanor had never spoken to her this way before.
Feeling suspicious, Halle returned to her room, wondering if Eleanor had suddenly had a change of heart.
But then Halle dismissed the thought.
People like Eleanor didn't change that easily.
And this shift was too abrupt.
She thought Eleanor must still be suspicious about her unexpected outing tonight.
This sudden kindness was surely just part of that suspicion.
But Halle had already decided she wouldn't forgive Eleanor or stand by her.
Doing so would be an insult to all she'd endured.
The next morning, a black car was parked across the street of the Thomson Group.
Benjamin sat inside.
He glanced back and forth between the
• Thomson Group building and his tablet.
"Mr. Tillman, Miss Hensley may not use the main entrance," Odin Arnold, Benjamin's assistant, said nervously. "Perhaps we should head back. This is Harrison's turf, after all..."
Benjamin shook his head.
"I know. But even if I can't see her, I just want to be close to her," Benjamin replied. "Are you worried Harrison would dare do anything to us? Relax. No matter how powerful he is, he won't ignore the influence of the Tillman family."
On the tablet was a record of Adeline's career accomplishments from recent years.
Of course, only the public parts were accessible.
Anything classified by the Thomson Group was beyond even Benjamin's reach.
"Whitney has become so impressive," Benjamin said with a smile. "I remember back when she worked with me, she was clumsy, always making mistakes. If she were still by my side now, she would undoubtedly take my career to the next level."
His eyes hardened as he spoke.
"But Harrison took her from me..."
Hearing this, Odin wanted to say something but remained silent.
He knew Benjamin's temperament well by now.
Any attempt to intervene would only make
Benjamin turn his frustration on him.
And when Benjamin was angry, it wasn't just a matter of shouting. If Benjamin was truly provoked, the consequences would be serious.
Odin still remembered another assistant two years ago. That man had said the wrong thing, angering Benjamin, and had been sent off somewhere unknown, never to be heard from again.
"Whitney, just wait. One day, I'll get you away from Harrison. I'll bring you home, and we'll be happy just like before," Benjamin said.
Meanwhile, Adeline was already at the office.
She had no idea there was a man across the street, yearning for her.
And even if she knew, she'd just be disgusted.
Adeline's mind was fully occupied with work.
In just a couple of days, the Thomson Group's Castlewill Manor would begin its soft opening.
After the opening, she and Harrison would stay there for two days to directly experience the guests' perspective at Castlewill Manor.
Around noon, she received a call from Joyce,
inviting her to dinner that evening.
Adeline sensed something off in Joyce's tone.
"What's wrong?" she asked. "Did something happen?"
"Oh, it's a long story. I'll tell you everything over dinner tonight," Joyce said.
"Alright, then."
After hanging up, Adeline felt a hint of unease.
After knowing Joyce for so many years, she could easily tell when something was wrong.
At that moment, Adeline was having lunch with Harrison.
He immediately noticed her unease and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Joyce invited me to dinner tonight."
Harrison sighed and thought, "Looks like I won't get to have dinner with her tonight."
"I just feel like something's wrong from her tone," Adeline said, worried. "Do you think Callan might have done something to her again?"
Harrison thought for a moment and said,
"Possibly. But Jamarion's been keeping a close eye on Callan. I doubt he'd risk approaching Miss Monroe directly."
Jamarion had recently made a considerable sacrifice to the Juarez family, giving up three valuable pieces of land.
It didn't sound like much, but these were highly lucrative properties.
This time, Jamarion was truly taking a hit.
For anyone else, he wouldn't have handed over those plots so easily.
But since Jamarion was negotiating with Harrison, things were different.
