Chapter 291: Never Give Up
"I once thought finding my birth parents would be nearly impossible," Adeline said. "I thought I might go my whole life without ever meeting them. But now, I am actually reuniting with them."
If her mother could see her reuniting with her birth parents, she would surely be overjoyed.
Harrison was genuinely happy for her, too.
Yet, beneath that happiness, he felt a flicker of unease.
Naturally, he wanted Adeline to reunite with her family.
But the Mendoza family was based in Yewhaina.
If Adeline decided to return to Yewhaina with the Mendoza family, they might part ways.
Just the thought of Adeline leaving sent a wave of panic through him.
He'd willingly go with her.
But he carried the responsibilities of the entire Thomson family.
He couldn't just walk away.
But it was not easy for Adeline to reunite with her birth parents. Harrison couldn't selfishly ask her to stay behind just for him.
Harrison's fingers tightened on the steering wheel.
But Adeline was lost in thoughts about the Mendoza family and didn't notice his reaction.
At the hospital, Isaac immediately went to arrange the DNA test.
Adeline, meanwhile, followed Gracie into
Alberto's ward.
Harrison chose to wait outside to give them space.
Alberto lay quietly on the hospital bed.
If not for the tubes attached to him, one might think he was merely asleep.
Even with his eyes closed, Adeline recognized him immediately.
He was the man she'd once encountered in the elevator in Marifort City.
Adeline thought, "So, this is Alberto. I have already met my brother without knowing it."
Adeline felt a twinge of regret.
If only she'd accepted his invitation to meet back then.
But life offered no second chances.
She couldn't have known then that this man, so similar in appearance to herself, was her brother.
"The doctor said talking to him might help. He might hear us," Gracie said, wiping away a tear. "If he knew you were here, it would make him happy."
Adeline stepped forward, moving closer to Alberto's bedside.
After a moment, she said softly, "Alberto, I came to see you."
Gracie held her breath, waiting.
Maybe a miracle could happen...
But the miracle Gracie hoped for didn't come.
Alberto's eyes remained closed. He showed no response.
Gracie sighed gently.
Adeline hadn't expected her presence to wake Alberto, so she wasn't disappointed.
But seeing him lying there unconscious filled her with a profound sadness.
"I hope you wake up soon," Adeline said softly.
"We're all waiting for you."
Gracie led Adeline to sit down beside her.
She had already made up her mind.
Even if it turned out Adeline wasn't her biological daughter, Gracie would take her as her goddaughter.
Of course, that was only if Adeline was willing.
She felt an undeniable bond with her.
"You poor child, you've had such a hard life, haven't you?" Gracie brushed back a strand of Adeline's hair tenderly.
She'd already investigated Adeline's upbringing.
Thinking of the hardship Adeline had endured, Gracie felt a pang of heartache.
Adeline smiled slightly, saying, "Actually, I was really happy when my mom was alive."
Even though she now knew Scarlett wasn't her biological mother, Adeline still couldn't think of her as just a foster mother.
"It's such a pity she passed away so young,"
Gracie said with pity.
She couldn't help but ask Adeline more about her life over the years.
Adeline, not wanting to worry her, only mentioned the less painful memories.
But even those were enough to make Gracie's heart ache.
If only they had found Adeline sooner.
She wouldn't have had to suffer so much.
The Mendoza family would not let Mateo and Janiyah off the hook.
While the two talked in the room, Isaac arrived at the door.
He'd already given the doctor both his and Adeline's hair for the DNA test.
But the results would take some time to come in.
Seeing Harrison standing nearby by the window, Isaac decided to approach him.
"Mr. Thomson," Isaac said. "Could we talk for a moment?"
Harrison turned at the sound of his voice.
"Of course."
Standing before his potential future father-in-law, Harrison couldn't help but adopt a more respectful demeanor.
"How long has Adeline been working as your assistant, Mr. Thomson?" Isaac asked.
"A little over five years," Harrison replied.
Isaac thought for a moment and then asked, "I don't mean to pry, but is there more between you two than just a professional relationship?"
Harrison answered openly, "I'm in love with her."
Isaac wasn't surprised by his honesty.
He'd come over to speak with Harrison specifically to determine whether Harrison's feelings for Adeline were genuine.
They had just found their daughter and wouldn't allow anyone to hurt her.
Harrison knew what Isaac was thinking.
"You don't need to worry," Harrison said.
"I'm serious about Adeline. There will be no one else for me in this life but her."
Isaac nodded, satisfied. "That's good to hear."
He sighed and added, "We owe her so much."
Although they'd sent her away for her safety, it pained him to think they had lived in comfort while she endured hardship.
Oddly enough, though the DNA results weren't out yet, Isaac already felt as if Adeline was his daughter.
"I will take care of her," Harrison said sincerely.
"I trust your word, Mr. Thomson," Isaac said.
"But there's one more thing. If Adeline doesn't want to return to Yewhaina with us, we won't force her. But if she does, what would you do?"
That was precisely the question that had been haunting Harrison all along.
"To be honest, Mr. Mendoza, I was thinking about that very thing," Harrison replied. "I can't abandon the Thomson family, but I also can't let her go. If she wants to go with you to Yewhaina, then I'll work through whatever obstacles there are. I'll be with her, no matter the distance. I won't give up on her."
Isaac smiled slightly. "Your intentions are good, Mr. Thomson, but you're still young. I believe what you say, but long-distance relationships aren't easy. At first, it may not seem like a problem, but what about five or ten years down the line? Are you certain that distance won't create a rift between you two?"
Harrison's heart tightened.
He knew Isaac was only being realistic.
Just then, the door to the room opened suddenly.
Gracie's voice rang out, trembling with excitement. "He moved! Alberto's finger just moved!"
