Chapter 206: Has The Next Time Arrived?
Harrison sat down on the sofa opposite Myra.
Adeline thought for a moment before sitting down on a small single-seat sofa nearby.
She could have sat with Harrison opposite Myra, but doing so would make it seem as if they were both confronting Myra together.
Any mother would feel uncomfortable facing such a situation.
Adeline didn't like Myra, but Myra was still Harrison's mother.
"Did you meet with Amber this morning?"
Harrison asked.
Myra, with a stern expression, replied, "Your information is really up-to-date. What, have you been keeping tabs on me?"
"I haven't."
"Then did Amber tell you?"
"No," Harrison said flatly, "The police found out."
Myra frowned. "What do you mean?"
How could meeting Amber involve the police?
"Amber is dead," Harrison said.
"What did you say?" Myra looked at him in shock. "How is that possible? When did she die?"
"Right after you met with her today."
"I didn't do anything," Myra said solemnly. "I just spoke with her, and then I left."
"So, what did you say to her?" Harrison asked.
This question seemed to catch Myra off guard.
She glanced at Adeline and said, "That's not important."
"Right now, anything related to Amber is important."
Myra seemed to become a little annoyed.
She angrily said, "I've told you that it's not important. Whatever I said has nothing to do
with her death."
"Actually, even if you don't say it, I can guess what you talked about," Harrison said calmly.
"So what? Are you going to scold me now?" Myra said.
"I just think it's ridiculous that you got involved in a murder case over such a matter." Harrison rubbed his temples and continued, "Have you thought about the impact it would have on you, on the Thomson family, on the Thomson Group, if word got out that you were involved in a murder case?"
Myra's face paled.
Of course, she knew.
Harrison was the head of the Thomson Group, and she was his mother. Her status was naturally prominent.
If something happened to her, it would certainly affect the Thomson Group.
Although Myra wasn't even considered a suspect right now, she was still involved in the case. And it was common for rumors to spread and be distorted.
Once people caught wind of this, no one knew how the story would evolve as it spread.
Myra understood all of this.
But with Adeline still present, she didn't want to appear weak in front of her.
So she pretended to be calm and said, "I have nothing to worry about because I had nothing to do with Amber's death."
"Mom, I hope that in the future, you wont act on your own in certain matters," Harrison said bluntly.
Myra wanted to retort, but then she thought about the recent events, first Kaylie, then Amber...
Suddenly, she found herself unable to argue back.
"Also, this sort of thing is hard to keep under wraps," Harrison said. "You know there are countless eyes on the Thomson family, so the fact that you are involved in this case will eventually come out. Be prepared."
He could certainly have any problematic news suppressed, but with the internet so pervasive, no one could completely stop the spread of rumors.
Myra felt a lump in her throat, and after a moment, she finally said, "Understood."
Of course, she knew she was innocent.
But public opinion could be terrifying, and sometimes words could become weapons.
"Let's go," Harrison said to Adeline.
They both stood up.
After a moment of hesitation, Adeline said to Myra, "Ma'am, don't worry. The innocent will be proven innocent, and the police will eventually find the real culprit. When that happens, no matter what rumors are circulating outside, they will all be dispelled."
Her voice was gentle.
Although comfort didn't mean much to Myra at this moment, hearing Adeline's words did somewhat ease her expression.
She awkwardly said, "Of course, I know that."
Adeline didn't say anything more and left with Harrison.
After they exited, Harrison said to Adeline,
"Actually, those words you just said, I was planning to say them too."
After all, Myra was his mother. With something like this happening, Myra must be feeling awful, and Harrison could not just blame her.
But when the words were about to come out, he suddenly felt that if he didn't say them, Adeline surely would.
He might as well take this opportunity to ease the tension between the two of them.
As he expected, after Adeline said those words, he clearly noticed that Myra's reaction was different from how she usually responded to Adeline.
Adeline understood his intention, of course.
She smiled, then sighed and said, "So many
things have been happening lately. With each event, I hope nothing else will happen, but things don't always go as we wish."
Last night, Sam was attacked, and today, Amber lost her life.
Adeline was now almost afraid of hearing her phone ring, fearing that every time she picked it up, it would be news of another incident.
"Don't worry," Harrison said. "No matter what happens, I'll be by your side."
Adeline's heart skipped a beat, and she couldn't help but look up at him.
Then she saw Harrison spreading his arms again.
"Has 'the next time' arrived?" He asked with a smile.
Adeline couldn't help but laugh.
Her eyes sparkled as she thought for a moment and said, "Not yet."
After saying that, she walked forward.
Harrison helplessly lowered his arms and
watched her back.
She really knew how to captivate him.
News of Amber's death spread even faster than Myra had anticipated.
By evening, various versions of the story were already circulating online.
Some people even posted so-called photos of the body found by the river.
But they were all fake.
The location was so remote and rarely visited that the passerby who stumbled upon the body was so terrified that they immediately called the police. No one had the presence of mind to take pictures.
The police arrived at the scene quickly, so no one outside of them had access to any photos from the scene.
But Myra's name appeared on major news platforms.
Although the Thomson Group suppressed one after another of the posts.containing Myra's name, they couldn't stop the spread of rumors.
"Have you all heard about the murder that happened today?"
"I did. They say it was a young woman who died horribly."
"Do you know that the woman worked for the Thomson Group?"
"Of course. I even heard she worked in the Thomson Group's president's office."
