Chapter 200: We’re All Family
She was Harrison's secretary. In the past, if such a situation had occurred, preparing breakfast for Harrison would have been her job.
But now, it seemed like the roles had reversed.
It was as if Harrison was her secretary.
Adeline couldn't help but smile.
After all, she had been Harrison's secretary for five years, and during those five years, their relationship had always been a typical superior-subordinate one.
So, adjusting to their current dynamic did require some time.
When she finished freshening up and changing, she received a call from Joyce.
"Adeline, I'm at the hospital now."
"So early?" Adeline asked in surprise.
She looked at the time, and it was still before eight.
Joyce liked to sleep in and usually got up just in time for work.
It was unusual for her to be up so early.
"Well... can I go in to see him now?"
Adeline hesitated and said, "I'll ask about it in a moment. You can come up first. I'll send you the floor and room number. But don't be too upset. Don't worry. Sam is out of danger. He was talking fine last night."
Having known Joyce for many years, Adeline understood her character well.
Joyce usually seemed carefree, but when it came to matters involving people she cared about, she could easily become emotional, especially when someone she liked was seriously injured.
Adeline was genuinely worried that Joyce might cry upon seeing Sam lying in the hospital bed.
Joyce said, "Don't worry. I understand."
Adeline said, "By the way, Mr. Juarez's parents are also here."
"I know."
Adeline entered Sam's ward.
Sam was already awake, and Regina was feeding him water with a straw.
After taking a few sips, he grinned at Adeline.
"Ms. Hensley, you're here. You must have stayed at the hospital last night too, right? Oh, I'm sorry for all the trouble you've gone through because of me."
"Mr. Juarez, you're too polite. We've known each other for so long," Adeline smiled.
"That's true. We're all family," Sam said, winking at Harrison.
Harrison's lips twitched.
He thought, "This guy, even with such serious injuries, still has the energy for this kind of teasing."
Adeline pretended not to understand what he said and asked, "Mr. Juarez, Joyce just called me. She's here and wants to visit you. Can you let her in later?"
"She's here too?" Sam, still smiling, said,
"Actually, she didn't need to make this trip.
It's a waste of time. But since she's already here, let her in. It's fine."
His words sounded like ordinary politeness.
But Adeline's heart sank.
His casual tone implied that he only saw Joyce as an ordinary friend.
Adeline's worries grew heavier.
Joyce, carrying a bouquet and some fruits, hurriedly headed towards the elevator.
She had been agonizing over what to buy and, in the end, bought ordinary flowers and some fruits.
However, before she could reach the elevator, someone suddenly stepped in front of her, blocking her way.
Joyce, a bit anxious, didn't look up and tried to move aside to pass the person.
But the person also moved aside, as if determined to block her path.
Annoyed, she looked up and was slightly taken aback when she saw the person.
"What are you doing here?" Joyce asked in surprise.
"Because I knew you would come here," Callan said with a stern face. "Joyce, don't go up."
. Joyce frowned and said, "I understand your point, but Sam is seriously injured. Can't I just visit him as a friend?"
"Friend?" Callan's lips curled into a cryptic smile.
"Joyce, you should be clear about what you're thinking."
"Even if I have those feelings for him, what right do you have to interfere?" Joyce couldn't help but say.
Callan's expression froze.
Joyce's face changed as she realized she had spoken too harshly and said, "Sorry, I shouldn't have said that. I know you think it's impossible for me and him, so you don't want me to have too much contact with him.
But this is my own choice, and I'll bear the consequences myself." With that, Joyce bypassed Callan and walked towards the elevator while he was still stunned.
Callan didn't follow her. He turned and watched Joyce's back, waves of pain surging through his heart.
He thought, "They were useless. They couldn't even take Sam's life."
Once in the elevator, Joyce let out a long sigh.
She didn't want to speak to Callan like that.
But her mind was filled with thoughts of Sam's serious injury.
Callan's interference had stirred her emotions.
Reflecting now, Joyce wondered if Callan had come to the hospital specifically to just prevent her from seeing Sam.
They were just friends. Did he need to do that?
A thought gradually formed in her mind, but she soon felt she might be overthinking.
When she interacted with Callan before, he had always treated her as a friend and never crossed any boundaries or showed romantic interest.
Even at the bar, he flirted with other women in front of her.
She had never felt he liked her.
However, seeing that she liked Sam, Callan
seemed genuinely unhappy and had been obstructing her.
It might be out of concern for a friend, but his reaction seemed excessive...
Joyce's head ached from thinking. She decided to discuss it with Adeline later and get her opinion.
After stepping out of the elevator, she followed the room number Adeline had sent her and arrived at Sam's ward.
She took a deep breath, raised her hand, and knocked on the door.
The door was quickly opened.
It was Adeline who answered the door.
"Come in quickly."
Joyce followed Adeline into the room and saw Sam lying in bed, wrapped in bandages.
Her eyes immediately turned red.
Adeline noticed Joyce's state at once and discreetly pinched her waist.
Joyce forced back her tears, set down the flowers and fruits, and asked softly, "Mr. Juarez, how are you?"
"Don't worry. I'm still alive," Sam joked. "I'm lucky and won't die so easily."
