Chapter 268: Let’s Check

Lacey gave Bianca a reproachful look.

But she knew deep down that Bianca was right.

Over the years, Mateo had not fulfilled his responsibilities as a father, allowing Janiyah and Millie to bully Adeline.

He didn't let Adeline starve, but Adeline repaid many debts for him.

Moreover, Mateo ended up with Adeline's mother's inheritance. He didn't deserve to be called "Dad" by Adeline.

Lacey wasn't someone who couldn't distinguish right from wrong. Although she felt heartbroken seeing her brother suffer, she knew she couldn't keep forcing Adeline to do anything for Mateo.

Besides, Lacey was only able to regain her health thanks to Adeline and Harrison.

Lacey sighed and said to Adeline, "You're right. I shouldn't have brought this up. As long as you're well, I will be at ease."

"Lacey, we're still a family," Adeline said, holding her hand.

Although she and Lacey weren't related by blood, some bonds of family weren't based on bloodlines.

Lacey said with a loving smile, "Alright, when I'm discharged and recovered, I'll cook you a nice meal. You can bring Mr. Thomson to our house for dinner."

"Great, but you'd better make me a few more dishes."

"How about twenty?"

"That's too much. I won't be able to finish it."

After dropping the subject of Mateo, the atmosphere in the room became much warmer.

However, Lacey's mention of the subject reminded Adeline of someone she had been neglecting, which was Janiyah.

So much had happened recently that Adeline hadn't had time to think about Janiyah.

Now that Adeline thought about it, something didn't add up.

Janiyah had no job, no money, and no reliable relatives to turn to.

Even if she couldn't stand Mateo's constant gambling and debt, she had nowhere to hide.

Adeline thought she needed to have someone look into what was happening with Janiyah.

After leaving Lacey's ward, Harrison had someone find out which room Alberto was in.

Alberto's room happened to be on the same floor as Sam's.

After getting out of the elevator, they headed toward Alberto's room.

As they neared the door, Adeline saw a middle-aged couple sitting on a bench outside the room.

The middle-aged woman was wiping her tears and saying, "How could things turn out like this? If I had known, I would have sent him home immediately after he finished his business, instead of letting him come here to help others. If he had gone straight home, he definitely wouldn't have had the accident."

The middle-aged man put his arm around her shoulders and comforted her, saying, "Don't worry, our son will be fine."

"We haven't done anything wrong. How could we end up with this? We've already lost one child. Does fate want us to lose another?"

"Don't say that. Alberto will definitely wake up."

Hearing their conversation, Adeline realized who these people were.

They must be Alberto's parents, the head and his wife of the Mendoza family.

Seeing them, Adeline felt a deep pang of pain in her heart and wanted to go over and comfort them.

But she restrained herself.

To them, she was probably just a stranger.

Approaching them suddenly might seem intrusive.

Adeline gently tugged on Harrison's sleeve and said, "Let's go."

"Aren't you going to see Alberto?" Harrison asked.

Adeline shook her head and said, "I don't want to disturb Alberto's parents. They are already very upset."

And she wasn't sure what role she should play in visiting Alberto.

"Don't worry. I'll have someone look into it as well. We'll make sure Alberto wakes up soon."

Harrison reassured her.

He didn't know why Adeline cared so much about Alberto, but since she did, he made it a priority.

He didn't feel jealous because it was clear that Adeline had no romantic feelings for Alberto.

"Okay," Adeline said.

Adeline and Harrison left together.

Meanwhile, on the bench, Alberto's mother, Gracie Mendoza, wiped her tears and said, puzzled, "Why was Alberto out at such a late hour? Why wasn't he resting at the hotel?"

"I've already asked those who were with him," Isaac Mendoza, Alberto's father, said.

"They said Alberto asked them to find out which hospital Miss Hensley was staying at. Miss Hensley is Mr. Thomson's chief secretary at the Thomson Group."

"So he had the accident on his way to find Miss Hensley? What did he need her for?"

"Maybe he needed her help with something related to Aprico Group."

Hearing this, Gracie regretted it even more.

"I shouldn't have let him help with this. It's all my fault.."

"Don't say that. No one can predict the future."

After a while, Gracie suddenly said, "I keep feeling something is off. Do you think Alberto really just wanted to ask Miss Hensley for help?"

"Maybe there's more to it? Should we look into it?" Isaac said.

"Yes, let's check."

Given that it involved their son's accident, they couldn't afford to be careless.

Adeline and Harrison then arrived at Sam's room.

Sam expressed his concern for Adeline with genuine warmth.

After chatting for a while, Sam seemed to hesitate and asked Adeline, "How has Miss Monroe been lately?"

"She's doing well," Adeline said. "She's been focused on work these days, and Callan hasn't appeared in front of her."

Upon hearing this, Sam nodded and said no more.

That was fine.

He and Joyce were from different worlds.

Joyce shouldn't waste any more time on him.

After visiting Sam, as they were about to leave the hospital, Adeline spotted two somewhat familiar figures.

"Is that Mr. Hunter and his wife?" Adeline asked.

Harrison followed her gaze and saw a couple walking towards the exit. It was Rogelio and Jasmine.

Jasmine still had tears on her face, and Rogelio was holding her shoulders, carefully comforting her.

Just then, Rogelio looked up and saw Harrison and Adeline.

He was momentarily surprised but quickly approached them with a smile.

"Mr. Thomson, Miss Hensley, what a coincidence to run into you here."
