Chapter 224: Let Him Alone
At that time, Scarlett was especially touched. She felt that Mateo was sincere to her.
So, not long after, she agreed to Mateo's pursuit.
Scarlett was raised too well by her family, so she was gentle and kind, yet somewhat naive.
When she was about to marry Mateo, her parents disagreed, and she begged pitifully, crying every day, until her parents, unable to bear to see their daughter suffer, finally agreed.
But a few days before the wedding, Scarlett suddenly brought home a baby still in swaddling.
"This child was entrusted to me by a friend,"
Scarlett told him. "Her family encountered some misfortune, and if she isn't sent away, her life might be at risk."
However, Scarlett never revealed to Mateo which friend had given her the baby.
"I want to adopt her. Originally, my greatest regret in life was not being able to have my own child, but now that I have this baby, I feel a connection with her. We must be destined to be mother and daughter."
At that time, Mateo suspected that this child might have been born to Scarlett with another man.
He couldn't possibly be the fool in this situation.
However, months ago, he had accompanied Scarlett to the hospital for a check-up, and he was certain that Scarlett truly couldn't have children.
And this child appeared to be only a month old, so she definitely wasn't born to Scarlett.
He had no interest in raising someone else's child.
Scarlett said, "I know it's unreasonable to expect you to raise a child that isn't yours, so I won't force you. If you mind, then we should part ways."
Mateo certainly minded.
But he was unwilling to give up Scarlett's family wealth.
So he refused to break up with Scarlett, agreeing to raise the child together and treating her as his own daughter.
And this child was, of course, Adeline.
After they married and adopted Adeline, Scarlett truly treated Adeline as her own daughter, caring for her attentively and nurturing her with love.
When they first got married, Mateo and Scarlett were very sweet.
At that time, Mateo thought that if life continued like this, it wouldn't be too bad.
But later, he was seduced by Janiyah and had an affair with her, which resulted in her becoming pregnant.
Initially, he didn't want Janiyah to have the child because he feared that Scarlett would find out.
If Scarlett insisted on divorcing him, he would be at fault and surely wouldn't get much money.
Then his good days would come to an end.
But later, when Janiyah brought Millie to him, and after doing a paternity test with Millie, he suddenly realized that having a child of his own felt so good.
So he continued to use Scarlett's money to support Millie and Janiyah, and after Scarlett passed away, he eagerly brought them into his home, continuing to live off Scarlett's inheritance.
As for Adeline, he originally didn't plan to keep raising her.
But on one hand, he was afraid of being gossiped about. After all, once Scarlett was gone, if he sent Adeline away, relatives, friends, and neighbors would definitely gossip about him.
On the other hand, he thought Adeline was smart and did well in her studies. She might have a bright future, certainly better than the academically struggling Millie.
So keeping Adeline would allow him to have someone to rely on in the future.
As long as he didn't let her starve, giving her some money for school would suffice.
And Mateo was right. Without Adeline, he probably would have been driven to death by his creditors shortly after becoming addicted to gambling.
"That's all I know," Mateo stammered. "At that time, your mother never told me which friend entrusted you to her, so I don't know who your biological parents are."
After hearing this, Adeline was already shaking with anger.
She couldn't hold back any longer and slapped Mateo hard.
"If you mind that my mother couldn't have children and she was raising someone else's child, then you shouldn't have been with her. You pursued her, married her, and used her money, yet you treated her like this."
At this moment, Adeline didn't even think about the suffering she had endured.
She only wanted to seek justice for her mother.
"I didn't want it to be this way." Mateo tried to absolve himself. "It was all Janiyah. She seduced me and gave birth to Millie behind my back. I originally wanted her to have an abortion.
I wanted to live a good life with your mother."
His kind of sophistry only sounded ridiculous to Adeline.
Regardless of whether he and Janiyah had a child, the fact remained that he cheated and betrayed his wife.
Janiyah was at fault, but Mateo was not a good man. He even shamelessly shifted all the responsibility onto others.
Harrison gently patted Adeline's back to soothe her emotions.
Then he asked, "Are you sure you've said everything you know?"
Mateo was truly afraid of Harrison. He racked his brain and then said, "Right, I remember that once Scarlett mentioned her friend in passing, and it seemed to be someone from abroad. But she didn't say anything else. I only know this. I swear."
Adeline knew that what Mateo had just said was likely true.
After all, it involved his biological daughter, Millie.
He didn't dare to concoct another story to deceive them.
She didn't want to look at Mateo again and turned to leave.
Mateo, still unwilling to give up, shouted, "I've told you everything about the past. Are you not planning to give me some money? Even just 20 thousand dollars. No, a few thousand would be fine."
But Adeline never looked back at him.
Harrison followed Adeline out of the room.
One of his subordinates stepped forward and asked, "Mr. Thomson, should we continue keeping an eye on this person?"
Harrison looked at Adeline, seeking her opinion.
"No need," Adeline said. "Let him go. If he wants to leave, let him. Don't worry about him."
Since Mateo had already told them everything he knew, there was no use in keeping him any longer.
Mateo could no longer stir up any trouble.
At most, he could go and cause a scene at Lacey's place, but people were guarding the hospital, so he couldn't get close to Lacey's room.
Adeline wouldn't do anything to him but wouldn't bother with him either.
She just let him fend for himself.
She returned to the car, leaning back in their seats and closing their eyes to rest.
From Mateo's words, Adeline could tell that her biological parents didn't abandon her intentionally. It was because of a family crisis that they had no choice but to give her up.
