Chapter 247: I Won’t Like Him Anymore
Adeline was stunned.
"20 thousand dollars?"
"Yes, why?" Joyce asked.
"Didn't you transfer 160 thousand dollars to me?" Adeline asked in surprise.
"No way." Joyce was also surprised. "I don't have that much!"
Adeline knew Joyce couldn't come up with 160 thousand dollars, but since Joyce said it was from her parents, Adeline didn't think much of it.
Now that she thought about it, Adeline realized that she did receive two text messages back then, one for 20 thousand dollars and another for 140 thousand dollars.
At that time, she thought it was just Joyce splitting the payment into two transfers.
Adeline thought, "So only the 20 thousand dollars was from Joyce? Then what about the 140 thousand dollars? Could it have been Harrison?"
But back then, his attitude towards her was clearly just that of a boss to his subordinate.
Moreover, when she wanted to advance her salary, Harrison told her that it wasn't allowed.
If it had been the Harrison of today, Adeline would have had no doubt that he was the one who transferred the money.
But back then, she was unsure if Harrison would transfer the money to her.
"Wait, so you're saying that besides the 20 thousand dollars I transferred to you, someone else transferred 140 thousand dollars to you?" Joyce slapped her thigh. "It must have been Mr. Thomson. Who else could come up with that much money for you? And at that time, there were probably very few people who knew about it."
Adeline thought that Joyce's words made sense.
Transferring money and not mentioning it was something Harrison could do.
Instantly, Adeline felt a mix of emotions, gratitude, bitterness, and self-reproach for not noticing sooner.
She always thought the previous Harrison was indifferent, only caring about work and not paying attention to her, so she never thought to ask him for help.
But it seemed that she was wrong.
It wasn't entirely her fault, however.
Harrison's past demeanor made it easy for her to misunderstand.
"Oh, it seems that Mr. Thomson might have started to see you differently a long time ago," Joyce said excitedly. "Do you think he might have liked you for a while? Maybe he liked you even when you first joined the Thomson Group five years ago."
"Don't say such things," Adeline said helplessly.
She would believe that Harrison saw her differently.
After all, she was his chief secretary.
Perhaps she was somewhat special in his eyes back then.
But to believe that Harrison had liked her since five years ago was something she couldn't accept.
"I don't think I'm wrong. You'll realize sooner or later that I'm speaking the truth," Joyce said.
Joyce's illness was still lingering, and after talking for a while, she started coughing again.
Adeline poured her a glass of water and took out her phone, intending to ask Harrison about the 140 thousand dollars.
But when she opened the chat with Harrison, she didn't know how to start.
She exited the chat and casually opened
Instagram instead.
The first thing she saw was two photos.
The first photo was of Sam half-sitting on a bed.
The second photo showed two hands tightly clasped together.
Adeline realized it was from the woman she added on Instagram yesterday.
At that moment, Joyce caught a glimpse of Adeline's phone screen and curiously asked,
"Who's showing off their love? Let me see..."
Adeline instinctively closed Instagram and said, "Nobody."
But Joyce had already seen Sam in the photo.
She paused for a moment and asked, "Is that Sam's new girlfriend?"
Seeing that Joyce had already seen, Adeline couldn't deny it and said, "Yes, I ran into her when I went to see Sam yesterday. She wanted to exchange contact info, and I couldn't refuse."
Joyce sighed and didn't say anything more.
"Joyce, are you alright?" Adeline asked with concern.
"I'm fine." Joyce shrugged nonchalantly.
"Anyway, I already knew he had a girlfriend, and I've decided that I won't like him anymore."
Saying that, she smiled again. "There are plenty of fish in the sea. I won't just focus on one. Adeline, once I'm better, let's go out and have some fun."
Adeline smiled back.
"First, focus on getting better."
Although Joyce said she wouldn't like Sam anymore, Adeline knew that she must be really sad now.
For one, Joyce felt responsible for Sam's situation.
Secondly, seeing Sam's new girlfriend flaunting their relationship on Instagram made her feel worse.
Adeline regretted opening Instagram out of idle curiosity.
Even though Joyce said she wouldn't like Sam anymore, such feelings weren't easily dismissed.
She could only hope Joyce would gradually move on from Sam.
Suddenly, the phone rang. Adeline looked down and saw it was a call from Harrison.
Joyce saw her expression and
immediately said, "Oh, I'm feeling a bit dizzy. I'm going to get some sleep."
With that, she went into the bedroom.
Adeline was left alone by the dining table.
She answered the phone and said, "Hello?"
"Are you still at Miss Monroe's house?" Harrison asked.
"Yes."
"How is she doing?"
"A bit better than yesterday, but still not fully recovered. I plan to stay here this weekend to keep her company," Adeline said.
Harrison sighed upon hearing this.
"What's wrong?" Adeline asked.
"Nothing," Harrison said quietly. "I was just thinking that it looks like we won't be able to meet this weekend."
Adeline couldn't help but laugh. "We see each other every day at the office. Isn't that enough?"
Harrison thought it was certainly not enough.
But he didn't say that.
He only said, "Jamarion contacted me."
Adeline frowned and asked, "Jamarion? Callan's father?"
"Yes, he invited me to lunch."
"That must be about Sam," Adeline said.
"Are you going?"
"I'll go and see what he wants to discuss."
"Be sure to stay safe," Adeline said with concern.
"If you need, I can accompany you, just for that lunch. Afterward, I can return to Joyce's place."
Harrison chuckled softly. "No need. Don't worry.
He won't dare to do anything to me."
Adeline thought the same.
Jamarion, no matter how powerful, wouldn't dare to confront Harrison openly.
His influence was strong, but he wouldn't také on the Thomson family directly, so his invitation for lunch must be a gesture of seeking reconciliation.
Once reassured, Adeline thought of Callan, and she became angry again.
Harrison noticed her change in mood and asked, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
"That bastard Callan..." Adeline gritted her teeth.
"If you see Jamarion today, could you remind him to keep his son in check? Even though Joyce is fine now, I want to hit him every time I see him."
Harrison didn't ask for details and just said,
"Alright, I'll mention it to him."
After discussing this, Adeline remembered the 140 thousand dollars again.
She hesitated but couldn't help asking, "By the way, Mateo owed a lot of gambling debts before.
At that time, I needed money and tried to advance my salary but failed."
