Chapter 244: I Only Want Sam's Life
Harrison had already stood up to get his coat.
"Since it's you treating me, you can decide," Harrison said with a smile. "I'll go along with whatever you choose."
"Then I have to look something up on my phone."
Adeline left the office, intending to search online for any new, good restaurants nearby.
But as soon as she picked up her phone, she saw a missed call.
It was from Joyce, who had called her just now.
Worried that something might be wrong, Adeline quickly called her back.
Soon, Joyce's weak voice came through the phone. "Adeline..."
"What's wrong, Joyce?" Adeline asked anxiously.
"I'm sick," Joyce said miserably. "I've been running a fever since last night."
She hadn't wanted to worry anyone and thought she could just tough it out after a good night's sleep, but after waking up, she found her condition had worsened.
Joyce lay in bed all day, but there was no sign of improvement.
Her parents were out of town, and she was afraid she couldn't manage alone, so she called Adeline.
"Have you taken any medicine?" Adeline asked quickly.
"I finished the last of the fever reducers at lunch. I just ordered more online, so it should arrive soon," Joyce said.
"Okay, wait for me. I'll come right over."
After hanging up, Adeline turned around and saw Harrison standing behind her, looking at her intently.
It was clear he had overheard her conversation.
Adeline felt a bit awkward.
She had just invited him to dinner, and now she was about to cancel.
But Joyce was sick, and she couldn't ignore that.
They had been friends for so many years, and Joyce had always been very good to Adeline.
Adeline was worried about her now that Joyce was ill.
"I'm sorry," Adeline said sincerely. "I did want to invite you to dinner, but Joyce just called to say she's sick, and I need to go check on her."
Harrison sighed.
It was unavoidable.
She couldn't ignore a sick friend just to have dinner with him.
"Go ahead," Harrison said. "But you compensate me."
"Compensate you?" Adeline asked nervously.
"How... How do I compensate you?"
They were still in the office, and Adeline wondered if Harrison would say something outrageous.
"Of course, you have to treat me to a few more dinners," Harrison said with a smirk.
Adeline breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, is that all?"
She thought, "Wait a minute, why did I feel a little disappointed?"
"What did you think it was?"
"Nothing. I didn't think of anything," Adeline said quickly.
When he saw her reaction, Harrison's lips curved into a fond smile.
"I'll drive you there."
"No need, I can just take a cab," Adeline said.
"Since you're not taking me to dinner, you should at least let me help with this small thing," Harrison insisted.
"Well... Okay."
After Joyce finished her call with Adeline, she felt dizzy and wrapped herself tightly in her blanket.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
She had just called Adeline, so it couldn't be her arriving already.
Joyce guessed it must be the medicine she had ordered.
She struggled out of bed, put on a coat, and went to the door, calling out, "Just leave it at the door."
"Joyce, it's me." A man's voice called from outside.
Joyce was startled and thought, "Is it Callan?" She looked through the peephole and saw Callan standing at the door.
She quickly opened it, surprised. "What are you doing here?"
Callan was holding a bowl of oatmeal and some medicine.
"I heard you were sick, so I came to check on you," Callan said, looking at her with concern.
"How are you doing?"
Joyce was puzzled and wondered how Callan knew she was sick.
She had only told Adeline and hadn't posted anything on Instagram.
But she was too exhausted to think straight.
"I'm fine, just still running a fever," Joyce answered groggily.
Callan walked in and said, "Have some oatmeal first, then take the medicine and get some good rest."
Joyce hesitated. "Alright. Thank you, but you can go now."
It wasn't that she didn't appreciate it, but she felt a bit awkward facing Callan.
Callan paused in his unpacking.
Soon, he resumed his composure and said,
"Joyce, I'm worried about you being alone while you're sick. Let me stay and keep an eye on you."
"Adeline will be here soon."
"Then I'll wait until she arrives. I'm not leaving you alone."
Joyce didn't have the energy to argue and let him stay.
Callan uncovered the oatmeal and handed her a spoon, saying, "Start with the oatmeal."
Joyce hadn't eaten, so she thanked him and sat at the table to eat.
As she was eating, Callan's phone rang.
He glanced at the caller ID and said, "I need to take this call."
"Okay."
Callan went out to the balcony to answer the call.
"What's going on?"
"Where are you?" Jamarion's voice came on the other end.
"At a friend's place," Callan said.
Jamarion was silent for a moment before asking, "At the house of the woman you like?"
"Well, that doesn't seem to concern you, Callan said coolly. "You should focus on dealing with the person from last time."
"I called to discuss that," Jamarion said.
"I've been thinking about it for several days, and I've decided to drop the matter."
"Why?" Callan asked coldly. "Have you forgotten what you promised me?"
"Aside from that issue, I can agree to anything else you ask."
Callan asked, "Are you afraid of the Juarez family or the Thomson family?"
Jamarion said, "It's indeed not beneficial to make an enemy of the Thomson family."
"But since you were willing to help me with this last time, it means you have a way to handle it. Why are you suddenly backing out?"
"Sam is your sister's friend," Jamarion said.
"I don't want to make your sister upset."
Callan sneered, "I see. So, now that your daughter orders, you forget about me? Was your promise of compensation all a lie? Do you need me to remind you of my past hardships?"
"Don't talk like that. Both you and your sister are important to me," Jamarion said.
"I don't want to hear that. I just want Sam's life!"
Callan shouted.
After saying this, Callan suddenly heard a faint sound behind him.
Startled, he turned around quickly.
Joyce was standing at the balcony door.
His coat was at her feet.
He had taken it off when he entered the house.
Joyce must have brought it to him because she was worried he'd be cold on the balcony.
Now, Joyce was staring at Callan, her eyes filled with disbelief.
