Chapter 205 : Do You Need a Hug?
The officer glanced at Harrison and hesitantly said, "It's Mrs. Thomson."
The chief's expression changed. "Are you sure?"
"From what we've found so far, the last person the deceased openly met was indeed Mrs. Thomson."
Harrison frowned slightly.
Why on earth would Myra meet with Amber?
But he quickly figured out why Myra would want to meet Amber.
He suddenly felt a headache coming on.
His mother really just wouldn't give up, acting on impulse.
Given that Harrison was right there, the chief officer felt a bit awkward, but in the interest of finding the real culprit, he continued, "Explain the details."
"Mrs. Thomson and the deceased met at the Peace Hotel. We've already confirmed with the hotel staff that Mrs. Thomson arrived first, followed by the deceased. They sat in a private room and ordered breakfast. The two were in the room together for about twenty minutes before Mrs. Thomson left. After she left, a waiter entered the room and confirmed that the deceased was still alive at that time."
The chief let out a slight sigh of relief.
"Forty minutes after Mrs. Thomson left, the deceased also left the hotel. We checked the surveillance at the hotel entrance, and she received a call as she reached the door, and then she got into a car. The last location where the car was seen was at an intersection, after which it drove north. But the area becomes increasingly remote and deserted, so there's no surveillance footage from there."
"Have you found out who made that call?"
"Not yet; the other party used a burner phone."
"Understood. Keep investigating."
After the officer left, the chief officer looked at Harrison, hesitated, and then asked, "Mr.
Thomson, may I ask what the relationship between your mother and the deceased was?"
"Nothing much," Harrison said calmly. "My mother once visited the Thomson Group to see me and happened to notice Amber, mistakenly thinking I was giving her special attention, which led her to interact with Amber a bit."
Harrison's explanation seemed reasonable enough.
The chief officer couldn't imagine a wealthy lady having breakfast with a low-level employee, so he naturally believed Harrison's story.
He tentatively asked, "So, were you really involved with Amber?"
"No," Harrison said. "The situation between us is somewhat complicated, so I'll keep it brief."
Harrison didn't want to bring up that night to anyone.
But now that there had been a murder, the police would certainly want to know everything about Amber, so Harrison didn't hide anything from the chief officer.
He briefly explained the situation between them.
The chief officer, having seen and heard a lot over the years, wasn't too shocked. He just nodded and said, "I understand. Don't worry, Mr. Thomson, we won't leak any of this."
"Good, thank you."
"It's all part of our job. We want to catch the culprit quickly and give the deceased some justice."
Before leaving, Harrison said to the chief officer, "You might also want to check if Amber received any unusual payments recently."
"Understood, we'll be thorough."
"Thank you."
Harrison and Adeline walked out of the police station together.
Noticing Adeline's troubled expression, he asked, "Are you scared?"
He hadn't seen Amber's body, but from what he heard, it was horrifying.
Adeline had seen it, so it was natural if she was shaken.
"Not exactly scared," Adeline sighed. "It's just... After all, it was a living, breathing person."
Even though she didn't like Amber, even despised her, it was hard not to feel something when someone who was so full of life just a few days ago was suddenly gone.
Harrison stopped walking and opened his arms to her.
"Do you need a hug?"
Adeline stood there for a moment, not moving.
Just as Harrison thought she wouldn't take him up on the offer, Adeline suddenly stepped forward, gave him a quick hug, and then quickly stepped back, putting some distance between them.
She moved so fast that he wondered if he had imagined it.
"Done," Adeline said as she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
Harrison was stunned for a moment; then chuckled, "That hug was way too short, don't you think?"
"Next time, I promise."
With that, Adeline started walking towards the car parked nearby.
She immediately recognized it as Harrison's car.
"What do you mean 'next time'? Explain yourself."
Adeline said, "Unlock the car."
Harrison, not getting an answer, sighed deeply, unlocked the car, and opened the passenger door for Adeline. "Your carriage awaits, my lady."
Adeline almost couldn't hold back her laughter.
Once they were both in the car, Adeline asked, "Where are we going now?"
"Back to the estate," Harrison replied.
Adeline was puzzled. "Why go back to the estate? Am I going with you?"
"The police found out that the last person Amber met before she died was my mother,"
Harrison explained. "Even though the
hotel staff's testimony can prove that Amber was still alive when my mother left, she's now somewhat involved in this case."
Adeline's mouth twitched slightly.
She could guess why Myra met Amber.
Myra probably had no idea that this would get her involved in a murder investigation.
Of course, both she and Harrison believed Myra wouldn't have killed Amber.
But whether others believed it was another matter.
"Are you sure you want to bring me along?"
Adeline asked. "She might be upset if she sees me."
"I need to make my stance clear to her," Harrison said.
Though his tone was casual, his words made Adeline's heart race.
When they arrived at the Thomson family estate, the servants immediately went to inform Lorenzo and Myra.
After all, it was unusual for Harrison to return at this time of day.
So they suspected something might have happened.
Once Harrison and Adeline entered the living room, Lorenzo and Myra quickly joined them.
As Adeline had expected, Myra's expression darkened the moment she saw Adeline.
However, she didn't immediately say anything unpleasant.
"Harrison, Ms. Hensley, why have you returned at this hour?" Lorenzo asked. "Did something happen?"
"Grandfather, it's nothing to worry about,"
Harrison said. "I just need to talk to my mother."
Myra frowned slightly.
Myra thought, "Why would Harrison bring Adeline back? Are they planning to lay
everything on the table with me?"
To be honest, Lorenzo had the same thought for a moment.
But then he reconsidered, thinking Harrison wouldn't be so reckless.
So he didn't press the issue and returned to his own tasks.
Myra sat down on the sofa, a cold smile on her face. "So, what do you two want to talk about with me?"
